Forests throughout the US are invaded by non-native invasive plants. Rural housing may contribute to non-native plant invasions
by introducing plants via landscaping, and by creating habitat conditions favorable for invaders. The objective of this paper
was to test the hypothesis that rural housing is a significant factor explaining the distribution of invasive non-native plants
in temperate forests of the Midwestern US. In the Baraboo Hills, Wisconsin, we sampled 105 plots in forest interiors. We recorded
richness and abundance of the most common invasive non-native plants and measured rural housing, human-caused landscape fragmentation
(e.g. roads and forest edges), forest structure and topography. We used regression analysis to identify the variables more
related to the distribution of non-native invasive plants (best subset and hierarchical partitioning analyses for richness
and abundance and logistic regression for presence/absence of individual species). Housing variables had the strongest association
with richness of non-native invasive plants along with distance to forest edge and elevation, while the number of houses in
a 1 km buffer around each plot was the variable most strongly associated with abundance of non-native invasive plants. Rhamnus cathartica and Lonicera spp. were most strongly associated with rural housing and fragmentation. Berberis thumbergii and Rosa multiflora were associated with gentle slopes and low elevation, while Alliaria petiolata was associated with higher cover of native vegetation and stands with no recent logging history. Housing development inside

Where large disturbances do not cause landscape-wide mortality and successional change, forested ecosystems should exhibit
landscape metastability (landscape equilibrium) at a scale equal to the dominant patch size of disturbance and recovery within
the landscape. We investigated this in a 16-ha contiguous plot of subtropical wet forest in Puerto Rico, the Luquillo Forest
Dynamics Plot (LFDP), which experienced two major hurricanes during the 15-year study and has a land use history (logging
and agriculture 40 or more years hence) that differs in intensity between two areas of the plot. Using he LFDP as our “landscape,”
we studied the spatial pattern of community change through time (3–5 year intervals) by calculating community dissimilarity
between tree censuses for two size classes of trees (1 to <10 cm DBH and ≥10 cm DBH) in quadrats ranging in size from 0.010–1 ha
and for the entire landscape, i.e., plot or land use type. The point at which the decline in community dissimilarity with
quadrat size showed maximum curvature identified the dominant patch size (i.e., point of metastability). For canopy trees
≥10 cm dbh, there was no evidence that the community experienced landscape-wide successional changes in either land use type,
and we found a consistent patch size of community change around 0.1 ha (range 0.091–0.107). For the understory tree and shrub
community (1 to <10 cm dbh) there was some evidence of landscape-wide community changes over time in response to hurricane
damage, apparently driven by interactions with the dominant canopy species, whose composition varied with land use intensity,

Management of tropical marine environments calls for interdisciplinary studies and innovative methodologies that consider processes occurring over broad spatial scales. We investigated relationships between landscape structure and reef fish assemblage structure in the US Virgin Islands. Measures of landscape structure were transformed into a reduced set of composite indices using principal component analyses (PCA) to synthesize data on the spatial patterning of the landscape structure of the study reefs. However, composite indices (e.g., habitat diversity) were not particularly informative for predicting reef fish assemblage structure. Rather, relationships were interpreted more easily when functional groups of fishes were related to individual habitat features. In particular, multiple reef fish parameters were strongly associated with reef context. Fishes responded to benthic habitat structure at multiple spatial scales, with various groups of fishes each correlated to a unique suite of variables. Accordingly, future experiments should be designed to test functional relationships based on the ecology of the organisms of interest. Our study demonstrates that landscape-scale habitat features influence reef fish communities, illustrating promise in applying a landscape ecology approach to better understand factors that structure coral reef ecosystems. Furthermore, our findings may prove useful in design of spatially-based conservation approaches such as marine protected areas (MPAs), because landscape-scale metrics may serve as proxies for areas with high species diversity and abundance within the coral reef landscape. 相似文献

In grassland areas subject to degradation caused by overgrazing such as the Maqu grasslands, excess livestock could be removed in order to balance available forage and animal numbers. As the number of animals owned by a herder family represents wealth, income, lifestyle, and culture, reducing livestock numbers is problematic and some form of compensation is required to encourage change. Willingness to accept compensation (WTA) was assessed with the use of contingent valuation (CV) methodology to estimate the value that herder families place on the livestock numbers that lead to overgrazing. The minimum acceptable compensation was estimated as 3 717 RMB (~ $555) per head of cattle and 503 RMB (~ $75) per head of sheep at 2005 prices. The total compensation required for herder families in Maqu was estimated to be between 2.5 × 108 RMB and 3.7 × 108 RMB at 2005 prices to reduce stocking to levels considered sustainable based on an estimate of 5 × 105 sheep overgrazing equivalents in 2006. 相似文献

Smallmouth bass in thermally heterogeneous streams may behaviourally thermoregulate during the cold period (i.e., groundwater temperature greater than river water temperature) by inhabiting warm areas in the stream that result from high groundwater influence or springs. Our objectives were to determine movement of smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu) that use thermal refuge and project differences in growth and consumption among smallmouth bass exhibiting different thermal‐use patterns. We implanted radio transmitters in 29 smallmouth bass captured in Alley Spring on the Jacks Fork River, Missouri, USA, during the winter of 2012. Additionally, temperature archival tags were implanted in a subset of nine fish. Fish were tracked using radio telemetry monthly from January 2012 through January of 2013. The greatest upstream movement was 42.5 km, and the greatest downstream movement was 22.2 km. Most radio tagged fish (69%) departed Alley Spring when daily maximum river water temperature first exceeded that of the spring (14 °C) and during increased river discharge. Bioenergetic modelling predicted that a 350 g migrating smallmouth bass that used cold‐period thermal refuge would grow 16% slower at the same consumption level as a fish that did not seek thermal refuge. Contrary to the bioenergetics models, extrapolation of growth scope results suggested migrating fish grow 29% more than fish using areas of stream with little groundwater influence. Our results contradict previous findings that smallmouth bass are relatively sedentary, provide information about potential cues for migratory behaviour, and give insight to managers regarding use and growth of smallmouth bass in thermally heterogeneous river systems. 相似文献

Studies of afferent lymph veiled cells (ALVC) show that the full biological function of dendritic cells in peripheral tissue is not explained by a simple model in which immature dendritic cells at the body surface take up antigen, migrate via the afferent lymph ducts, mature and then effectively present antigens to T-cells in the draining lymph node. Furthermore, it is evident from various investigations that the dendritic cells in afferent lymph draining from the body surfaces are not a homogeneous population of cells. They comprise a mixture of cell phenotypes defined by staining with monoclonal antibodies, and the different sub-populations have distinct biological functions and roles in vivo. The molecular basis for differences between the function of afferent lymph dendritic cell subsets is only now being explored and defined but some progress has been made in understanding the role of co-stimulatory molecules. It should be possible to exploit knowledge of the functions of these cells and aid future vaccination strategies in domesticated animals thereby improving animal health and reducing economic loss, and, as a consequence, improving human health. By deliberately targeting functionally distinct subsets of either precursor or mature dendritic cells in vivo, it should become feasible to achieve an appropriately biased immune response. 相似文献

Largemouth bass (LMB) Micropterus salmoides fry do not accept prepared diets at first feeding. Fry are initially reared in fertilized ponds on natural live foods until large enough to be feed trained. Unpredictable weather patterns and depletion of natural forages can affect nursery pond survival. A series of experiments was conducted to investigate the use of Artemia nauplii prepared diets and optimal feeding schedules to raise LMB fry from first feeding through habituation to a commercial dry diet. In Studies 1, 2, and 3, swim-up fry were transferred to a recirculating system and stocked into either 3-L (Studies 1 and 2) or 10-L (Study 3) acrylic aquaria. Study 1 screened candidate diets to evaluate whether LMB fry could be transitioned directly to prepared diets or if they required live foods. In Study 2 the optimum duration for feeding live Artemia (1, 2, or 3 weeks) and the appropriate size of commercial diets (<200 or 200–360 μm) were evaluated. Study 3 was designed to identify the best transitional feed. Results from Study 1 indicate that fry fed Otohime-A (<200 μm) and decapsulated Artemia cysts performed better than those fed other diets tested. However, survivals were low (6%–8%) indicating a need for live feed initially. In Trial 2, fry fed live Artemia nauplii for two weeks and then transitioned to a 200–360 μm diet (Otohime-B) performed better than other diet combinations tested. In Study 3, survival was significantly higher in treatments using decapsulated Artemia cysts or Otohime-B as transitional diets between initial live Artemia feeding and trout starter. These data indicate that LMB fry can be successfully raised from first feeding to fully habituated to a commercial trout starter by feeding live Artemia nauplii for two weeks, followed by a gradual transition to either decapsulated Artemia cysts or Otohime-B for one week, then gradually transitioning to trout starter. Surviving fish were easily transitioned to commercial floating feed (Study 4). This protocol yielded survival rates of approximately 70% and may improve the reliability of LMB fingerling production by eliminating the outdoor nursery pond phase. 相似文献

Relating fish physiology, behaviour and experience to fitness‐related outcomes at the individual scale is ecologically significant, but presents difficulties for free‐ranging fishes in natural systems. Physiological state (e.g. level of stress or maturity) and experience (e.g. habitat use or exposure to stressors) may alter the probability of survival or reproduction. This study examined the relative influence of physiology and migratory experience on survival, migration duration, reproductive longevity, and egg retention in adult female sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) from a Fraser River population. One hundred and thirty‐five females were plasma sampled and tagged with radio transmitters and archival temperature loggers. Fish were tracked 55 km through two natal lakes to spawning grounds, following passage of a hydroelectric dam. For 39 females, we assessed the proportion of time within an optimal temperature (ToptAS) window (13.4–19.5°C), which provides ≥90% of maximum aerobic scope. Females with lower plasma glucose concentrations were more likely to reach spawning grounds. Early migrants spent longer in natal lakes. More time in the ToptAS window was associated with greater reproductive longevity and lower probability of egg retention. Later arriving females had reduced longevity on spawning grounds, as did females that retained eggs. Exposure to higher dam discharge was associated with reduced reproductive longevity and greater probability of egg retention, but not lower survival, indicating a delayed effect of dam passage. Our results underscore the complexity of factors governing fitness‐related outcomes for salmonids, particularly the importance of female experience in the days and weeks prior to spawning. 相似文献
