The objective of this study was to determine the activity of steroid‐ and eicosanoid‐metabolizing enzymes in horses with varying BCSs. The BCSs of twenty non‐pregnant, anoestrous mares were determined prior to euthanasia, and tissue samples were collected from the liver, kidney, adrenal gland, ovary and endometrium. Cytochrome P450 1A (CYP1A), 2C (CYP2C), 3A (CYP3A) and uridine 5′‐diphospho‐glucuronosyltransferase (UGT) activities were determined using luminogenic substrates. The MIXED procedure of SAS was used to test the effect of BCS on enzyme activity and differences between tissues. Activity of CYP1A in adrenals was increased (p ≤ .05) in BCS 5 versus BCSs 4 and 6. Activity of CYP1A in the liver was increased (p = .05) in BCS 4 versus BCSs 5 and 6. Activity of CYP1A was 100‐fold greater (p < .0001) in the liver than in the adrenal, ovary and kidney. Activity of CYP2C was 100‐fold greater (p < .0001) in the liver than in the adrenal, ovary and endometrium. Activity of CYP3A was only detectable in the liver. Activity of UGT in the kidney was decreased (p = .02) in BCS 4 versus BCSs 5 and 6. Activity of UGT was threefold greater (p < .0001) in the liver than in the kidney, whereas activity of UGT was ninefold greater (p < .0001) in the kidney than in the ovary and endometrium. In general, BCS did not alter the activity of steroid‐ and eicosanoid‐metabolizing enzymes in horses. Candidate male and female breeders from nine genetic lines of turkeys that were reared intermingled, with the sexes housed in different buildings on the same farm, were vaccinated with a live Newcastle disease virus vaccine (B1 type, LaSota) just prior to the commencement of egg production. In 1999, an average mortality for all lines of 5.8% occurred during the 10 days immediately following vaccination and the level of mortality varied among lines. Mortality was, in general, greater in large-bodied lines than in small-bodied lines. Affected birds exhibited gross multiple areas of focal necrosis in the liver and spleen and congestion of the heart and lungs. The percentage mortality occurring following similar vaccination in 2000 averaged 2.6 for the 10 days following vaccination and mortality was greater (P < or = 0.05) in one line (F line) than the other genetic groups and higher in females than in males. Mortality in the F line, selected for increased body weight and known to be susceptible to various diseases, averaged 15.1% for both years. Attempts failed in both years to isolate Pasteurella multocida or other bacteria. Crop genotypes with root traits permitting increased nutrient acquisition would increase yields in low fertility soils but have uncertain effects on soil fertility in the long term because of competing effects on nutrient removal vs. the soil conserving effects of greater crop biomass. This study evaluated the relative importance of phosphorus loss in crop extraction vs. phosphorus loss in soil erosion as influenced by genetic differences in root shallowness and therefore phosphorus uptake in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). Six recombinant inbred lines of varying root architecture and two commercial genotypes of bean were grown in unfertilized, steeply sloped (32%), low phosphorus (5.8 mg kg?1, Fe-strip) Udults in Costa Rica. Fertilized (60 kg total phosphorus ha?1) plots of commercial genotypes were also included in the study. Runoff was monitored throughout the bean growing season in 2005 and 2006, and in 2006, monitoring continued through the maize growing season. Phosphorus removed in plant biomass at harvest through the 2006 bean–maize crop cycle averaged 7.3 kg ha?1 year?1, greatly exceeding phosphorus loss due to erosion (0.15–0.53 kg ha?1 year?1) in unfertilized plots. In fertilized bean plots, total biomass phosphorus averaged 6.32 kg ha?1 year?1 and total eroded phosphorus averaged 0.038 kg ha?1 year?1, indicating rapid sorption of fertilizer phosphorus. Shoot growth of several recombinant inbred lines under low phosphorus was comparable to that of fertilized commercial genotypes, illustrating the effectiveness of selection for root traits for improving plant growth in low-phosphorus soils. Genotypic differences in root architecture of recombinant inbred lines led to 20–50% variation in groundcover by shoots, which was associated with 50–80% reduction in sediment loss. This study demonstrates that root architecture traits can affect nutrient cycling at the agro-ecosystem level, and that integrated nutrient management strategies are necessary to avoid soil nutrient depletion. 相似文献

High-quality seedlings are a prerequisite for successful forestry and agroforestry expansion in developing countries. Unfortunately, in the central Philippines, as supplies of timber from native forest have diminished in recent years, the expansion in planting of timber trees has been retarded by sub-optimal production of seedlings from small-scale nurseries. To address this problem, an extension program supported by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) has attempted to improve the quality of seedlings produced in home nurseries, by assisting smallholders to raise and out-plant seedlings. A complementary program undertaken as part of the Community Agricultural Technology Program (CATP) has attempted to provide community workers and managers of small-scale nurseries with the benefit of recent ACIAR nursery research. Extended assistance in the ACIAR program addressed smallholders’ low self-efficacy in nursery technology and was successful in assisting them to grow high quality seedlings. A limited program of assistance was relatively unsuccessful. Evaluation of the CATP program showed that prior to the training, CATP participants were unfamiliar with some aspects of basic nursery technology. Consequently, they may have been unable to provide competent advice to smallholders. This implies that—as with the ACIAR training—extended training and follow-up assistance may be the key to improving the quality of seedlings for forestry and agroforestry expansion in the central Philippines. 相似文献

A study was conducted to investigate the amino acid (AA) composition and the susceptibility to in vitro proteolysis (pepsin, 120 min and pancreatin, 240 min) of a collection of purified phaseolins ( n = 43) in unheated or heat-treated form. The AA composition of phaseolin varied little across bean varieties. At 360 min of in vitro proteolysis, the degree of hydrolysis varied from 11 to 27% for unheated and from 57 to 96% for heated phaseolins ( P < 0.001). Heat treatment markedly increased the susceptibility of phaseolin to proteolysis ( P < 0.001). The AA scores (AAS) and the protein digestibility corrected for AAS indicated S-containing AA as the limiting AA (39 +/- 3 and 30 +/- 5%, respectively). In conclusion, susceptibility to proteolysis of heat-treated phaseolin rather than its AA composition affects the nutritional value of phaseolin estimated in vitro. Therefore, it should be the criterion of choice in breeding programs aimed at improving the nutritional value of common beans for humans. 相似文献

Six hundred fifty-five male and female turkeys representing four genetic lines were challenged in 10 experiments over a 3-year period with a field isolate of Pasteurella multocida. Poults were challenged at 45 days of age with 1 ml of an inoculum containing 1.2 x 10(7) bacteria per ml. The lines of turkeys included two randombred control lines (RBC1 and RBC2), a subline (E) of RBC1 selected for increased egg production, and a subline (F) of RBC2 selected for increased 16-week body weight. The number of days from exposure to severe clinical signs or death for Line F (5.8 days) differed significantly from that of Line E (8.2 days), Line RBC1 (8.0 days), and Line RBC2 (8.2 days). There were no significant differences due to sex of poult for number of days from exposure to severe clinical signs or death. Overall mortality observed was 51.2%. Mortality was highest for Line F (72.1%) and differed significantly from that of the other lines. Mortality among male poults did not differ significantly from mortality among female poults. 相似文献

Plasma concentrations of insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) were determined in male and female turkeys from a medium weight (RBC2) and a related heavy weight line (F) from 1 to 28 wks of age. At hatch, the concentrations of IGF-I were relatively low and not different between lines or sexes. During the neonatal period (1 to 7 wks), the concentrations of IGF-I increased and were higher in the faster growing F line and in males. During the juvenile period (8 to 15 wks) the concentrations of IGF-I were higher in males but not different between lines. During the preadolescent period (16 to 21 wks), the concentrations of IGF-I were higher in males but was not different between lines in males while the females of the RBC2 line had higher concentrations than females of the F line. During the adolescent period (22 to 28 wks) the concentrations of IGF-I were higher in males but was not different between lines in males while the females of the RBC2 line had higher concentrations than females of the F line. A phenotypic correlation (+.25) between plasma IGF-I and growth rate was present after statistical absorption of model effects during the neonatal period but not at the later ages. We conclude that IGF-I concentration was positively correlated with growth rate during the neonatal period, but that this relationship changed during the preadolescent and adolescent periods so that IGF-I concentrations were not related to growth rate in males but were negatively related to growth rate in females. 相似文献

To establish the effect of sward height (SH) and concentrate supplementation on performance of grazing cattle, 24 crossbred Angus beef cows (535 kg BW) and calves (114 kg BW) were grouped by weight and calving date. They were randomly assigned to two SH treatments, either 4 to 8 cm or 8 to 11 cm, and fed three levels of supplement, high, low, or none, consisting of 6.24, 3.12, and 0 kg x animal(-1) x d(-1), respectively. The experiment was repeated over three 15-d periods in 1996: May (P1), June/July (P2), and August (P3). No SH x supplement level x period or SH x supplement level interactions (P > 0.10) were evident for responses tested. Cows on lower SH had greater (P < 0.08) DMI but spent an additional 1.3 h/d (P < 0.01) grazing compared with cows on higher SH. Sward height had no influence (P > 0.10) on forage DM digestibility (DMD). Forage DMI, DMD, and grazing time (GT) decreased (P < 0.05) as supplementation increased. Nonetheless, supplemented cows consumed more total DMI (P < 0.08) than unsupplemented cows. Cows consumed 2.4 kg/d more forage DM (P < 0.01) in P1 and P2 than in P3. Cows grazed 1.3 h/d (P < 0.01) less in P1 than in P2 and P3. Grazing efficiency (DMI/h GT) declined as supplementation increased and grazing season advanced to P3 (P < 0.01). Decreased forage DMI and grazing efficiency with increasing supplementation suggests that supplemented cattle should be able to maintain productivity while grazing at SH lower than unsupplemented cattle. 相似文献
