Mazama ash in the northeastern pacific

Volcanic glass in marine sediments off Oregon and Washington correlates with continental deposits of Mount Mazama ash by stratigraphic position, refractive index, and radiocarbon dating. Ash deposited in the abyssal regions by turbidity currents is used for tracing of the dispersal routes of postglacial sediments and for evaluation of marine sedimentary processes.     

Odd-parity superconductivity in Sr2RuO4

Phase-sensitive measurements were made on Sr2RuO4 to establish unambiguously the odd-parity pairing in this material. The critical current of Au(0.5)In(0.5)-Sr2RuO4 superconducting quantum interference devices prepared on Sr2RuO4 single crystals was found to be a maximum for devices with junctions on the same side of the crystal and a minimum for devices with junctions on opposite sides, in the limit of zero magnetic flux; these findings indicate that the phase of the superconducting order parameter in Sr2RuO4 changes by pi under inversion. This result verifies the odd-parity pairing symmetry and the formation of spin-triplet Cooper pairs in Sr2RuO4.     

Diffraction from polymerized membranes

Flexible polymerized membranes in a good solvent are expected to exhibit a remarkable low-temperature flat phase, characterized by a diverging bending rigidity, vanishing elastic constants, and large fluctuations both parallel and perpendicular to the surface. A theory of the equilibrium structure factor provides a good fit to extensive molecular dynamics simulations of simplified "tethered surface" models of these materials. These results show how information about the size, thickness, and internal structure of polymerized membranes can be extracted from diffraction experiments.     

Auroral photography from a satellite

Photographs taken from satellites show the form, location, and intensity of the aurora from a new perspective. They provide an effective way of monitoring auroral activity on a worldwide basis and are likely to become one of the major tools in the effort to understand this phenomenon.     

A process for controlling intracellular bacterial infections induced by membrane injury

Strategies for inhibiting phagolysosome fusion are essential for the intracellular survival and replication of many pathogens. We found that the lysosomal synaptotagmin Syt VII is required for a mechanism that promotes phagolysosomal fusion and limits the intracellular growth of pathogenic bacteria. Syt VII was required for a form of Ca2+-dependent phagolysosome fusion that is analogous to Ca2+-regulated exocytosis of lysosomes, which can be triggered by membrane injury. Bacterial type III secretion systems, which permeabilize membranes and cause Ca2+ influx in mammalian cells, promote lysosomal exocytosis and inhibit intracellular survival in Syt VII +/+ but not -/- cells. Thus, the lysosomal repair response can also protect cells against pathogens that trigger membrane permeabilization.
