Two vaccines, based on formalin-killed whole cells of toxigenic Pasteurella multocida type D and Bordetella bronchiseptica combined with a partially toxoided cell extract of P multocida, were prepared with Freund's incomplete adjuvant (vaccine 1) or by alum precipitation (vaccine 2). Each was tested for safety and efficacy in reducing the severity of nasal turbinate atrophy and improving the growth rate of pigs in three Western Australian commercial piggeries with endemic atrophic rhinitis. In safety experiments with vaccine 1, no adverse clinical effects were observed in vaccinated sows or their progeny. Piglets receiving vaccine 2 showed no injection site abnormalities, pyrexia or turbinate atrophy. In field trials, vaccine 1 significantly reduced the prevalence of moderate to severe nasal turbinate atrophy (Done score 3 to 5) when used in two piggeries (A and B). Progeny from vaccinated sows in piggery B also grew significantly faster than controls. When vaccine 2 was used in piggery A at a later date and in another piggery (C), growth rate was not improved in either piggery and the prevalence of moderate to severe turbinate atrophy was reduced only in piggery C. 相似文献
There are few reports of coagulation times in marsupial species. Blood samples collected from 14 Bennett's wallabies (Macropus rufogriseus) under anaesthesia during routine health assessments were analysed for prothrombin time (PT) and activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) using a point‐of‐care analyser (POC) (Abaxis VSPro®). The wallabies had an aPTT mean of 78.09 s and median of 78.1 s. The PT for all wallabies was greater than 35 s, exceeding the longest time measured on the POC. Three simple tests of acid-base status were evaluated for field use. Blood samples were collected from 20 diarrheic and 24 healthy calves less than six weeks of age. One sample was collected anaerobically and immediately analyzed on a blood gas analyzer. The other samples were used for measurement of blood and serum pH using a pH meter and pH paper, and for serum total carbon dioxide (TCO2) using a TCO2 apparatus. The TCO2 apparatus gave the best results and would be useful in the field. TCO2 apparatus measurements had a high correlation, r=0.91, with blood gas analyzer blood bicarbonate values. Healthy calves have a serum TCO2 content of 30 mmol/L and bicarbonate requirements for correcting metabolic acidosis in diarrheic calves can be calculated:
Bicarbonate required (mmol) = (30-TCO2) × Body Weight × 0.6 This can be converted to grams of sodium bicarbonate by dividing by 12.
A prospective study of the severity of dehydration and acidosis was carried out in 42 calves under 35 days of age presented for treatment of neonatal diarrhea. Clinically the mean level of dehydration was 8 to 10%. The plasma volume was 65% of that in the hydrated calf but the calves only gained 6.5% in weight during therapy.
Calves under eight days of age often had a lactic acidosis. Blood pH was 7.118±0.026 (mean ± 1 standard error), bicarbonate concentration 18.8±1.3 mmol/L, base deficit 11.4±1.7 mmol/L and lactate of 3.6± 0.06 mmol/L. Calves over eight days usually had a nonlactic acidosis. Blood pH was 7.042±0.021, bicarbonate 10.8±1.0 mmol/L, base deficit 19.5±1.2 mmol/L and lactate 1.2±0.3 mmol/L. These values were all significantly different from those in younger calves.
Over all calves there was a poor correlation between the severity of acidosis and dehydration(r=0.05). The severity of lactic acidosis was related to the severity of dehydration. Mean bicarbonate requirements to correct acidosis were calculated to be 200 mmol(17 g of sodium bicarbonate)and 450 mmol(37 g of sodium bicarbonate)in calves under and over eight days of age respectively. Both groups of calves required a mean volume of 4L of fluid to correct dehydration.
Acorn production is one of the most important products in silvopastoral systems in the Mediterranean region. In the present
study we carried out two preliminary trials to analyze the distribution of production over time and the effect of pruning.
The objective was to develop tools to manage this valuable resource within these systems. In the first part of the study,
we analyzed the total acorn production of a holm oak stand, and its seasonal distribution (October–January) over two years
(1997–1998 and 1998–1999) in five sites in the southwest of Spain. Mean total acorn production ranged from 590 to 830 kg ha−1. There was considerable variation between the different sites and years studied, as was expected from studies on other oak
species. A comparison was also made of acorn production, comparing annual acorn production between 40 pruned and 40 non-pruned
trees, for the period 1994–1999. There was an interaction between ‘pruning treatment’ and ‘year’. Pruning, significantly decreased
acorn production in all but two years when production was above the average, whereas production was not affected by pruning
the three years that acorn yield was below the average. The study of acorn production and the analysis of the effect of pruning,

Mycoplasma synoviae (Ms) is an important pathogen of poultry, causing economic losses to this industry. Early and reliable diagnosis is a key to controlling the spread of this organism. In this study, a polymerase chain reaction with one primer based on the intergenic spacer region (ISR) was validated for detection of Ms. The ISR primer was paired with a general primer from within the 23S rRNA gene. The PCR primers were tested with the 22 other recognised avian Mycoplasma species to check the specificity and with 21 field isolates of Ms from various hosts and countries, and with several swab samples. The PCR appeared to be specific and sensitive. Four different sample preparation methods were compared for use in this PCR, and the amplification protocol was compared with three others, confirming the comparative sensitivity of the new PCR. 相似文献
The real and/or perceived shortage of veterinarians serving food-supply veterinary medicine has been a topic of considerable discussion for decades. Regardless of this debate, there are issues still facing colleges of veterinary medicine (CVMs) about the best process of educating future food-supply veterinarians. Over the past several years, there have been increasing concerns by some that the needs of food-supply veterinary medicine have not adequately been met through veterinary educational institutions. The food-supply veterinary medical curriculum offered by individual CVMs varies depending on individual curricular design, available resident animal population, available food-animal caseload, faculty, and individual teaching efforts of faculty. All of the institutional members of the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC) were requested to share their Food Animal Veterinary Career Incentives Programs. The AAVMC asked all member institutions what incentives they used to attract and educate students interested in, or possibly considering, a career in food-supply veterinary medicine (FSVM). The problem arises as to how we continue to educate veterinary students with ever shrinking budgets and how to recruit and retain faculty with expertise to address the needs of society. Several CVMs use innovative training initiatives to help build successful FSVM programs. This article focuses on dairy, beef, and swine food-animal education and does not characterize colleges' educational efforts in poultry and aquaculture.
