The objective of this study was to examine whether susceptible calves grazing together with second-year resistant heifers are less exposed to trichostrongylid infection than are calves grazing on their own. Two groups of animals representing each age category were turned out onto pasture on 24 May 1997 and grazed at comparable stocking rates. The grazing of calves and heifers together was compared to groups of each age category grazing separately. The results indicated that herbage larval counts were significantly reduced in the second part of the grazing season on the plot grazed by the mixed group compared to the plot grazed by the first-season calves only. The mixed grazing strategy protected the young calves and no clinical signs were observed in this group, while most of the calves that grazed alone exhibited clinical signs. The availability of herbage was reduced towards the end of the season, with subsequent competition for the grass forcing all the animals to graze the tufts around the faecal pats, where the quality of the grass is poor and the numbers of infective larvae are high. The effect of this was visible in the form of increased parasite burdens in the calves that were grazed together with the heifers, confirmed by increased blood serum pepsinogen concentrations and reduced daily weight gains in the second part of the grazing season. The lower numbers of infective larvae on the pasture were probably achieved through the heifers ingesting many of the larvae but subsequently depositing relatively few eggs, since they had acquired some degree of resistance against trichostrongylid infections during their first grazing season. Thus they did not suffer any parasitological ill-effects during mixed grazing with first-season calves.  相似文献

This study reports a comparison between faecal egg count reduction test (FECRT), egg hatch assay (EHA) and larval development assay (LDA) for detecting anthelmintic resistance in equine strongyles. Resistance to benzimidazoles was demonstrated in 33 of 42 (79%) farms tested by FECRT and in 32 (62%) of the 52 farms tested by EHA. As the reference strain used was not fully susceptible to benzimidazoles it was not possible to determine the level of resistance by LDA. Pyrantel resistance was indicated on three of 15 farms by faecal egg count reduction. Resistance was also indicated by LDA for one of these farms. In addition resistance was indicated by LDA on two more farms that were not tested by FECRT. Further testing is needed to confirm if these findings are truly indicative of resistance. Generally, correlations between the tests were poor and it was not possible to use the outcome of one test to predict the outcome of another.  相似文献

In this article, we review studies of the ecology of the larger grain borer, Protephanus truncatus, both outside and within the maize storage systems. Laboratory studies have shown that P. truncatus can breed on a wide range of woody substrates (branches, roots, and seeds). Pheromone trap catches in different habitats strongly suggest that P. truncatus is well-established in certain non-agricultural environments, presumably breeding in dead or dying wood. In Meso-America, West and East Africa, P. truncatus reproduction in the field has been documented in branches ring-barked by cerambycid beetles. Within a maize store, P. truncatus densities can increase from very small initial colonies of probably less than 200 individuals to densities in excess of 1000 beetles per kg after about 4–6 months of storage. Insect parasitoids are very often found in smallholders' grain stores attacked by P. truncatus, but they do not contribute significantly to population regulation. Declines in maize store population levels in Benin from 1993 to 1996, and in adult abundance in pheromone traps in the natural environment in Kenya, have been attributed to predation by the introduced predator, Teretrius nigrescens, but in recent years pheromone trap catches in West Africa suggest that the situation may be complex. Several environmental factors, notably temperature, humidity, and daylength, and their interactions, have been correlated with P. truncatus flight activity, as well as, in West Africa, the emptying of maize stores. Laboratory experiments have shown food quality also affects flight activity. Factors terminating dispersal and flight are most likely attraction to the male-released aggregation pheromone. Short range attraction to plant volatiles has also been recorded. In Africa the highest densities of P. truncatus tend to occur in humid lowlands, which contrasts with the situation in meso-America where P. truncatus tend to occur in greatest numbers in cooler upland regions. Pheromone trap catches can be significant predictors of the risk of stores becoming infested. Coupled with the development of a rule-based model of flight activity, these studies may offer the prospect of predicting the risk of store infestation based upon temperature and humidity measurements.  相似文献

A survey to determine the nematode species in rural chickens reared extensively was carried out in six districts of Zimbabwe. Two-hundred-and-seventy chickens were randomly collected from the districts and processed for helminth recovery. One genus and 10 species were identified from the gastrointestinal tract but no parasites were found in the respiratory tract and eyes. Skrjabinocerca sp., Capillaria obsignata, Capillaria contorta and Trichostrongylus tenuis are new records in Zimbabwe. Allodapa brumpti and Tetrameres americana were the most common species with a prevalence of 64.8% and 64.1%, respectively.  相似文献

This study was carried out to obtain basic information on the transmission of Oesophagostomum dentatum and Hyostrongylus rubidus in outdoor reared pigs in Denmark. Eighteen 10 weeks old worm-free pigs were allocated into 3 groups of 6 pigs each. In May, all pigs were turned out on the same parasitologi-cally naive pasture, and after 2 weeks the pigs in groups 2 and 3 were experimentally infected with 10,800 O. dentatum and 8,700 H. rubidus infective larvae, respectively. Pigs in group 1 served as non-infected controls. All pigs were reared together on the experimental pasture for further 134 days until slaughter in October. Strongyle egg counts, differentiation of infective larvae at species level, serum pepsinogen, and herbage larval infectivity were monitored at regular intervals throughout. Both strongyle species established in the originally parasite-free pigs (group 1) and cross infections were established in group 2 and 3. The pigs were exposed to steadily increasing herbage infectivity of both species of strongyles. At the end of the experiment, geometric mean worm burdens of O. dentatum in groups 1,2 and 3 were 1202, 6136 and 1431 respectively, the burden in group 2 being significantly higher (p<0.05) than that of the 2 other groups. The geometric mean worm burdens of H. rubidus in groups 1, 2 and 3 were 4907, 3679 and 5246 respectively, showing no significant differences between groups.  相似文献

This study was undertaken to determine whether anthelmintic-resistant Oesophagostomum spp. populations occur in Danish swine herds. A controlled field trial on selected sow herds suggested resistance to pyrantel citrate in a herd where faecal egg count depression in response to treatment was only 28.3%. This was confirmed by subsequent experimental infection of pigs where the suspected resistant Oesophagostomum isolate was compared with a susceptible worm isolate. After treatment with the recommended dose of the drug, worm burdens of the suspected isolate were only reduced by 42.6% (p greater than 0.05) in contrast to the susceptible isolate, which was reduced by 94.6% (p less than 0.01). Differential counts of the resistant isolate suggested that O. dentatum might be more resistant than O. quadrispinulatum. The resistant isolate originated from a herd, where the anthelmintic had been administered four times a year over a period of 7 years. The potential for development of anthelmintic resistance in Oesophagostomum spp. under management practices in our country is discussed in the light of the current views on predisposing factors.  相似文献

This study was undertaken to establish whether anthelmintic resistance was present in nematode parasites of horses in Denmark. Sixteen horse farms were selected for faecal egg count reduction (FECR) tests to measure the efficacy of the anthelmintic used. Resistance to benzimidazole anthelmintics was found on 13 of the 16 farms, with FECR values ranging from 80.0% to -101.3%. On the remaining 3 farms FECR was 100.0%, 99.3% and 97.2%. Results of a questionnaire study on anthelmintic usage, parasite control measures and management practices showed that horses in this study were treated on average 7.1 times/year. Horse owners changed between preparations of drugs but almost only within the same class of anthelmintics. Nine owners gave an anthelmintic treatment to purchased horses before they were introduced on the farm. On 14 farms, the same paddock was grazed every year and the average stocking rate was estimated to be 2.4 horses/ha. Strategies to avoid development of anthelmintic resistance are discussed and recommendations of parasite control on horse farms are presented.  相似文献

Risk factors in light T. saginata cysticercosis in cattle herds were investigated in a case-control study. The case group consisted of farms from which cattle with low-grade cysticercosis had been detected at slaughter. The control group consisted of farms where no cases were detected during the same period. The major risk factor identified was allowing cattle access to drink from streams carrying effluent from sewage treatment plants (odds ratio = 3.6). Spreading of septic tank sludge through deliberate or accidental mixing with animal slurry, deposition of sewage sludge, and proximity to railways, camping sites or sewage treatment plants seemed to be of minor importance.  相似文献
