It was previously revealed that esculeoside A, a new glycoalkaloid, and esculeogenin A, a new aglycon of esculeoside A, contained in ripe tomato ameliorate atherosclerosis in apoE-deficent mice. This study examined whether tomatidine, the aglycone of tomatine, which is a major tomato glycoalkaloid, also shows similar inhibitory effects on cholesterol ester (CE) accumulation in human monocyte-derived macrophages (HMDM) and atherogenesis in apoE-deficient mice. Tomatidine significantly inhibited the CE accumulation induced by acetylated LDL in HMDM in a dose-dependent manner. Tomatidine also inhibited CE formation in Chinese hamster ovary cells overexpressing acyl-CoA:cholesterol acyl-transferase (ACAT)-1 or ACAT-2, suggesting that tomatidine suppresses both ACAT-1 and ACAT-2 activities. Furthermore, the oral administration of tomatidine to apoE-deficient mice significantly reduced levels of serum cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, and areas of atherosclerotic lesions. The study provides the first evidence that tomatidine significantly suppresses the activity of ACAT and leads to reduction of atherogenesis. 相似文献

The visual symptoms of damage by acid sulfate soil look quite similar to those due to soil moisture deficit. The present paper
is to confirm if acid soil-tolerance is associated with drought tolerance in terms of leaf water potential, transpiration,
and dry matter production. Seedlings of seven acid soil-tolerant (acid-tolerant), and three acid soil-intolerant varieties
(acid-intolerant) were subjected to low pH conditions (pH 3.8) for 48 hours. The rate of water uptake was determined continuously
by measuring radioactivity in the collar part (target area) of rice leaves exposed to 18F-labeled water (18F-water) using a Positron Emitting Tracer Imaging System (PETIS). The PETIS measurement showed that the radioactivity in the
target position of leaves of acid-tolerant varieties increased faster than that of the intolerant varieties after the 18F-water was applied into the vial. In the plants subjected to low pH conditions, the transpiration rate (Tr) and leaf water
potential (Ψ) decreased in both acid-tolerant and intolerant varieties. However, the extent of reduction was less in the acid-tolerant
varieties than in the intolerant ones. Moreover, the dry matter production rate of the acid-tolerant varieties was significantly
higher than that of the acid-intolerant ones in the low pH conditions. This study clearly shows that 18F-water uptake in a leaf was higher, and water relations were also better maintained in the acid-tolerant varieties compared
with intolerant ones, resulting in higher growth rate in the acid-tolerant varieties, when plants were exposed to the acid

To characterize the mechanism of the reaction of lignin with aqueous acetic acid (AW) containing a small amount of H2SO4, guaiacylglycerol--guaiacyl ether (GOG), and guaiacylglycerol--syringol ether (GOS) were refluxed in 90% AW with 0.28% H2SO4 for 0–120 min. Reaction products and their silylated derivatives were characterized by analytical methods such as gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance. When the model compounds were allowed to react at boiling temperature for 0 min (heat-up time 30 min), most of their primary alcohol groups and some of their secondary alcohol groups were acetylated, but their phenolic groups were not. About 90% of GOG was degraded, polymerized, or both during boiling for at least 15 min, yielding guaiacol and isocoumaran compounds (GOG-e and GOG-f) in addition to homovanillin (II) as guaiacylvinyl alcohol (I) and other minor products. GOS yielded syringol, homovanillin (II), and a novel compound (V) together with unknown products but not the corresponding isocoumaran compounds. 相似文献

Glucagon‐related peptides, such as glucagon‐like peptide (GLP)‐1, GLP‐2 and oxyntomodulin (OXM), are processed from an identical precursor proglucagon. In mammals, all of these peptides are suggested to be involved in the central regulation of food intake. We previously showed that intracerebroventricular administration of chicken OXM and GLP‐1 significantly suppressed food intake in chicks. Here, we show that central administration of chicken GLP‐2 potently suppresses food intake in chicks. Male 8‐day‐old chicks (Gallus gallus domesticus) were used in all experiments. Intracerebroventricular administration of chicken GLP‐2 significantly suppressed food intake in chicks. Plasma glucose concentration was significantly decreased by chicken GLP‐2, whereas plasma nonesterified fatty acid concentration was significantly increased. Intracerebroventricular administration of chicken GLP‐2 did not affect plasma corticosterone concentration. In addition, the anorexigenic effect of GLP‐2 was not reversed by the corticotropin‐releasing factor (CRF) receptor antagonist α‐helical CRF, suggesting that CRF is not a downstream mediator of the anorexigenic pathway of GLP‐2 in chicks. Intracerebroventricular administration of an equimolar amount of GLP‐1 and GLP‐2, but not OXM, significantly suppressed food intake in both broiler and layer chicks. 以云南麻鸭为试验材料,分别在稻鸭共生(稻鸭组)和常规网上平养(常规组)两种饲养模式下饲养至体重达1.8 kg,测定其常规肉品质和部分屠宰性能.结果表明:①两组间鸭肉失水率、嫩度、熟肉率、肉色亮度值和红度值无显著差异(P>0.05);稻鸭组的pH值显著高于常规组(P<0.05);肉色黄度值B极显著高于常规组(P<0.01).②两组间屠宰率、半净膛率、全净膛率、胸肉率差异不显著(P>0.05);稻鸭组的皮脂厚、腹脂率比常规组分别降低了18.52%、11.76%(P<0.05);腿肉率提高了11.40%(P<0.05).③稻鸭组的生长速度明显慢于常规组. 相似文献

Knowing whether test species used for single-species toxicity tests are representative of other species provides valuable information because contaminant effects are often extrapolated to the community level based on these tests. To evaluate how representative the sensitivity of the standard test collembolan species Folsomia candida is for Collembola, we devised toxicity tests using the collembolan species Onychiurus yodai and Sinella umesaoi, which exhibit life-forms different from F. candida. Sensitivity to cadmium (Cd) was compared between F. candida and the novel test species. The 50% effective concentrations for reproduction were 154.7, 72.2 and 40.9 mg Cd/kg dry soil for O. yodai, F. candida and S. umesaoi, respectively. Thus, the reproductive sensitivity of F. candida to Cd was between that of the other two species. Increasing reproductive sensitivity to Cd corresponded to increasing activity levels and a more surface-dwelling life-form. Our data may facilitate the generalisation of effect data for F. candida to other species. 相似文献
