Understanding the role of organic acids on phosphorus (P) sorption capacity of soils is very important for its economic and friendly management. Combining P application with low-molecular weight organic acids could result in its higher plant availability for prolonged time. Therefore, citric and oxalic acid (at the rate of 1.0 mM kg?1 soil) were evaluated for their effect on P sorption capacity and its plant availability in two different textured calcareous soils. Organic acids decreased P sorption capacity and organic carbon partition coefficient (Koc) whereas increased Gibbs free energy (ΔG) of P. Organic-acid-treated soils required lesser quantity of P fertilizer to produce soil solution P concentration optimum for plant growth (external P requirement [EPR0.2]), that is, 0.2 mg L?1. Citric acid was efficient than oxalic acid in the above effects. P sorption parameters of Freundlich model were negatively correlated with lime potential and ΔG whereas had positive correlation (< 0.05) with EPR0.2 and Koc. Incubation with oxalic acid increased available P in loamy sand and loam soil by 20% and 30%, respectively. Thus, organic acids could help reduce application rate of P fertilizer through lowering its adsorption in highly P-fixing soils without compromise on yield.  相似文献

The number of drought and low-N tolerant hybrids with elevated levels of provitamin A (PVA) in sub-Saharan Africa could increase when PVA genes are optimized and validated for developed drought and low-N tolerant inbred lines. This study aimed to (a) determine the levels of drought and low-N tolerance, and PVA concentrations in early maturing PVA-quality protein maize (QPM) inbred lines, and (b) identify lines harbouring the crtRB1 and LcyE genes as sources of favourable alleles of PVA. Seventy early maturing PVA-QPM inbreds were evaluated under drought, low-N and optimal environments in Nigeria for two years. The inbreds were assayed for PVA levels and the presence of PVA genes using allele-specific PCR markers. Moderate range of PVA contents was observed for the inbreds. Nonetheless, TZEIORQ 55 combined high PVA concentration with drought and low-N tolerance. The crtRB1-3′TE primer and the KASP SNP (snpZM0015) consistently identified nine inbreds including TZEIORQ 55 harbouring the favourable alleles of the crtRB1 gene. These inbreds could serve as donor parents of the favourable crtRB1-3′TE allele for PVA breeding in maize.  相似文献

The effects of pregnancy on some biochemical parameters were studied using 20 sexually mature, cycling goats with weight range 20-25 kg. They were randomly separated into two groups of 10 animals each. In one group, oestrus was detected while going round with a buck in the morning and evening; a single buck on detection of oestrus mated the does and the does were tagged as pregnant after confirmation of non-return of oestrus. The other group was kept cycling and tagged as non-pregnant. The mean serum glucose concentration in pregnant does was 63.35 +/- 7.70 mg/dl, significantly lower than 71.59 +/- 1.14 mg/dl for non-pregnant does (p < 0.05); the mean serum cholesterol concentrations were 79.48 +/- 14.93 for pregnant and 67.29 +/- 1.10 for non-pregnant does, with significant difference (p < 0.05). Protein (g/dl), urea (mg/dl), creatinine (mg/dl) and free fatty acid (microequiv/L) remained unchanged between the two groups (p > 0.05), as did the liver enzymes (ALT, AST). Therefore this study showed that low serum glucose and high cholesterol levels are features of mid to late pregnancy in Sahel goats.  相似文献

Phenolic compounds have been suggested as one of the defence mechanisms to cocoa swollen shoot virus disease (CSSVD), but not well studied. Correlation and genetic variation of total phenolic content (TPC) and CSSVD resistance among 53 cocoa families were investigated. Three‐month‐old seedlings of 15 families obtained from an incomplete 6 × 3 NCII mating design, of 24 families from a 3 × 8 NCII mating design and of 14 other families were evaluated for CSSVD and TPC. Plants were inoculated with viruliferous mealybugs carrying the New Juaben CSSV strain (1A) in a gauze house facility. A single seedling randomization within blocks procedure was followed, using the gauze house units as blocks. There were six blocks with five seedlings of each family randomized within each block. Disease severity scores on leaf flushes at the first, second, third and seventh flushes after inoculation were recorded. The TPC before and 3 months after inoculation was also determined. Family effects were highly significant (P ≤ 0.01) for CSSVD severity scores and TPC. Narrow‐ and broad‐sense heritability estimates were low for CSSVD severity but moderate to high for TPC evaluations. Correlations between severity scores and TPC were weak (= ?0.22 to 0.40) suggesting that the TPC may be of little value in selecting CSSVD resistance varieties in cocoa. Additive effect in terms of significant GCA was important for CSSVD severity scores whereas both additive and non‐additive effects were important for TPC values when the 3 × 8 and 6 × 3 NCII mating designs were analysed. Only clones GU 239/H, GU 290/H and GU 225/V had favourable GCA effects for CSSVD symptom expression indicating their potential for developing progeny with high levels of resistance to CSSVD infection.  相似文献

Reservoir siltation because of water erosion is an important environmental issue in Mediterranean countries where storage of clear surface water is crucial for their economic and agricultural development. The high density of gully systems observed in Mediterranean regions raises the question of their contribution to reservoir siltation. In this context, this study quantified the absolute and relative contributions of rill/interrill and gully/channel erosion in sediment accumulation at the outlet of small Tunisian catchments (0·1–10 km2) during the last 15 years (1995–2010). To this end, a fingerprinting method based on measurements of caesium‐137 and total organic carbon combined with long‐term field monitoring of catchment sediment yield was applied to five catchments in order to cover the diversity of environmental conditions found along the Tunisian Ridge and in the Cape Bon region. Results showed the very large variability of erosion processes among the selected catchments, with rill/interrill erosion contributions to sediment accumulated in outlet reservoirs ranging from 20 to 80%. Overall, rill/interrill erosion was the dominant process controlling reservoir siltation in three catchments whereas gully/channel erosion dominated in the other two catchments. We identified the presence of marly gypsum substrates and the proportion of catchment surface covered by soil management/conservation measures as the main drivers of erosion process variability at the catchment scale. These results provided a sound basis to propose guidelines for erosion mitigation in these Mediterranean environments and suggested to apply models simulating both rill/interrill and gully/channel erosion in catchments of the region. Understanding and controlling structural and physical changes in meat during cooking is of prime importance. Nuclear magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a noninvasive, nondestructive tool that can be used to characterize certain properties and structures both locally and dynamically. Here we show the possibilities offered by MRI for the in situ dynamic imaging of the connective network during the cooking of meat to monitor deformations between 20 and 75 °C. A novel device was used to heat the sample in an MR imager. An MRI sequence was developed to contrast the connective tissue and the muscle fibers during heating. The temperature distribution in the sample was numerically simulated to link structural modifications and water transfer to temperature values. The contraction of myofibrillar and collagen networks was observed at 42 °C, and water began to migrate toward the interfascicular space at 40 °C. These observations are consistent with literature results obtained using destructive and/or nonlocalized methods. This new approach allows the simultaneous monitoring of local deformation and water transfer, changes in muscle structure and thermal history.  相似文献

The possibility to identify or develop new rice cultivars with low glycemic response was investigated. Twelve rice cultivars with a narrow range of amylose contents were selected based on their wide variation in rapid viscoanalyzer (RVA) pasting breakdown to study the relationship between starch digestibility and amylopectin fine structure and pasting properties. Rice flour samples were cooked for in vitro digestibility analysis using the standard Englyst assay. RVA was performed for pasting properties of starches. Results showed that rapidly digestible starch (RDS) was highly and negatively correlated (r = -0.86, p < 0.01; r = -0.81, p < 0.01) with FrI long and FrII intermediate/short debranched amylopectin linear chains, respectively, and positively correlated (r = 0.79; p < 0.01) with FrIII very short linear chains. Slowly digestible (SDS) starch was positively correlated (r = 0.80, p < 0.01; 0.76, p < 0.01) with FrI and FrII, respectively, and negatively correlated (r = -0.76, p < 0.01) with FrIII. RVA breakdown viscosity was positively correlated (r = 0.88, p < 0.01) with RDS and negatively correlated (r = -0.89, p < 0.01) with SDS. Thus, the RVA method potentially could be used as a screening tool for starch digestion properties. This study reveals a molecular basis in amylopectin fine structure variability for starch digestion properties in rice cultivars and could have value in identifying slowly digesting cultivars as well as developing a breeding strategy to produce low glycemic rice cultivars. Coxiella burnetii infection in pregnant sheep typically causes abortion or the birth of weak lambs. Two C. burnetii-related abortions in a group of 34 pregnant ewes were reported at their first lambing in our research institute. The seroprevalence of C. burnetii infection and bacteria shedding were investigated using an ELISA and PCR, respectively, during the course of two subsequent pregnancies. None of the ewes examined seroconverted from negative to positive at the time of the second and the third parturition and most of the ewes that were seropositive at the abortion episode remained positive throughout the investigation. The two successive pregnancies resulted in the birth of healthy lambs without PCR evidence of Coxiella infection from placenta and vaginal swabs taken postpartum. PCR assay performed on vaginal swabs taken from all animals 1, 5 or 12 days after the second lambing were also negative for Coxiella. However, one ewe that had previously experienced C. burnetii shedding at the first lambing excreted the bacteria in the genital tract after the third parturition. The bacteria could not be detected by PCR in milk and faecal samples taken up to 12 days after both parturitions.  相似文献
