Mixed-sex blue tilapia Oreochromis aureus fry were produced from indoor spawns in March and April. Fry were stocked in May at an average weight of 0.5 g at 0, 250, 750, or 2,500/ha into ponds which had been stocked previously with three catfish strains at a combined density of 10,000 fingerlings/ha. After a 167-d culture period, from 15 May until 4 November, tilapia stocked at 250 or 750/ha grew to average harvest size approaching 0.45 kg. No significant difference in average size was observed between males and females except at the 2,500 tilapia/ha stocking density. Sixty percent of the tilapia polyculture ponds yielded no reproduction at harvest and maximum reproduction observed was 13.5 kg/ha. Lack of reproduction and the undeveloped state of sampled female ovaries indicated that most females had yet to attain sexual maturity. Catfish production and catfish feed conversion was not significantly different between tilapia polyculture and catfish monoculture ponds ( P > 0.05). First seine hauls yielded over 88% of the total catfish harvest, but only an average of 3.9% of the marketable tilapia. Tilapia had no measurable impact on the incidence of catfish off-flavor at any of three sample intervals. Overall average levels of TAN and nitrites did not differ significantly between treatments; however, mean chlorophyll a concentration was significantly higher ( P > 0.05) in the 2,500 tilapia/ha treatment than at lower tilapia densities.  相似文献

Protection against challenge with Theileria parva was conferred on three of four calves given three or four inocula of plasma membranes prepared from 6 to 12 X 10(8) autologous parasitized lymphoblasts from cultured cell lines. In contrast, calves remained susceptible to infection following immunization with membranes prepared from allogeneic parasitized lymphoblasts. Similarly, calves vaccinated with either gamma-irradiated autologous or allogeneic infected cells also died of East Coast fever after challenge. The results raise the possibility of vaccination against T. parva using subcellular material from infected lymphoblasts.  相似文献

In theory, pseudorabies virus (PRV) may be eliminated from any size of breeding herd by phased test and removal if replacement gilts are not infected with PRV, culling decisions are partially based on PRV status, and the cull rate is higher than the incidence rate of PRV. Annual cull rates are commonly at least 50%, but little information exists on the incidence of PRV within enzootically infected swine herds. The purpose of this study was to develop a method by which spread of PRV could be detected among breeding swine within enzootically infected herds and to determine the incidence of PRV infection in these herds. Data were collected from 17 herds that were quarantined for PRV and ranged in size from 120 to 1,100 sows. At each herd, within the first 5 days of introduction, a group of approximately 30 replacement gilts was identified, vaccinated with a glycoprotein X-deleted PRV vaccine, and blood sample was collected. The owner of 1 herd had a nonvaccinated breeding herd and elected to leave incoming gilts nonvaccinated. After vaccination, blood samples were collected every 1 to 2 months for an average of 13.6 months. Serum samples from vaccinated gilts were tested for antiglycoprotein X antibodies by a specific differential ELISA. Samples from nonvaccinated gilts were evaluated by serum neutralization test. Product-limit method was used to estimate the probability of not becoming infected with PRV. Spread was detected in 7 of 8 herds that had more than 400 sows and in 2 of 9 herds that had less than 400 sows.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

In this report, we described the clinical, radiographic, and echocardiographic findings in a cat with hypersomatotropism and insulin-resistant diabetes mellitus. Growth hormone determinations were made because of persistent hyperglycemia despite insulin requirements exceeding 2.2 U/kg of body weight, and the acromegalic features of the cat. Also, the results of a therapeutic trial in which a long-acting analogue of somatostatin was used are discussed.  相似文献

A Light, scanning and transmission electron microscopic study of the coyote respiratory system was carried out, utilizing ten coyotes of both sexes. Electron microscopy was used to diagnose primary ciliary dyskinesia in a litter of English pointer dogs and in a golden retriever dog. A technique of membrane solubilization, fixation, and negative staining with glutaraldehyde tannic acid identified abnormally constructed central and B microtubules in respiratory cilia from dogs with primary ciliary dyskinesia. Shortened outer dynein arms commonly associated with primary ciliary dyskinesia actually represents the absence of a specific subset of the three most peripheral components of the whole outer dynein arm structure.  相似文献

Objectives To assess a method for monitoring depth of anaesthesia using components of middle latency auditory evoked potential (AEP) waveforms during anaesthesia with fentanyl/fluanisone and midazolam. Study design Prospective observational study. Animals Five female Wistar rats weighing between 210 and 250 g. Methods Implanted electrodes were used to record AEPs in animals receiving five doses of anaesthetic. Recordings were made at 5 minutes post‐injection (deep anaesthesia; no pedal withdrawal response, PWR) and then at 25 minutes (light anaesthesia; strong PWR). Responses showed five characteristic peaks occurring at 11, 14, 23, 42 and 68 ms that were measured for latency of occurrence and peak amplitude. Results Auditory evoked potential peaks P14, N23 and P42 were increased significantly in latency with successive anaesthetic injections [avg. F(1,4) = 12.53, p < 0.001; avg. F(1,4) = 10.6, p < 0.001; avg. F(1,4) = 3.9, p = 0.02, respectively]. Peak N23 showed a significant reduction in latency during the 20 minute recovery period following both the first and second anaesthetic injections (t(3) = 7.52, p = 0.005; t(4) = 5.17, p = 0.007, respectively). Peak P42 occurred significantly earlier 20 minutes following the second anaesthetic injection (t(4) = 4.75, p = 0.009). The mean overall depth of anaesthesia assessed using PWR scores was significantly correlated with the mean latency of peak N23, such that as the strength of PWR increased, N23 occurred significantly earlier (r = ?0.99, p = 0.01). The amplitude difference between peaks N23 and P42 increased after the second and third drug administrations [avg. F(1,4) = 10.65, p = 0.031 and avg. F(1,4) = 11.24, p = 0.028, respectively]. Conclusion The characteristics of these peaks, and in particular latency of peak N23, may provide a useful tool for assessing depth of anaesthesia produced by this, and possibly other anaesthetic agents.  相似文献

Over a concentration range of 5.0 × 10?6?7.5 × 10?4M, the selective herbicide difenzoquat (1,2-dimethyl-3,5-diphenyl-1H-pyrazolium) caused more pronounced inhibition of potassium ion (K+) absorption by excised seedling roots of susceptible wild oat (Avena fatua L.) compared to those of tolerant barley (Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Bonanza) or wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Neepawa). At 2.5 × 10?5M difenzoquat, the relative inhibition of K+ (86Rb) absorption by wild oat root segments inceased from 30% with a 10-min uptake period to 75% with an uptake period of 90 min, whereas no inhibition at all was evident for wheat root segments even after a 90-min exposure to the herbicide. An ion efflux compartmental analysis procedure demonstrated that difenzoquat did not affect the passive permeability properties of the plasma membrane of wild oat root cells. The experimental findings indicated that difenzoquat interfered directly with the process of active ion transport across the plasma membrane of root cells.  相似文献

Monoclonal antibodies (mAb) which react with bovine monocytes have been produced. These include three mAb (P8, IL-A22 and IL-A24) that recognize the majority of monocytes and granulocytes in peripheral blood; two of these mAb were also shown to react with 30-40% of cells in bone marrow, including both monocytic and granulocytic cells, and with variable percentages of tissue macrophages. Thus these mAb can act as markers for myeloid cells in haemopoietic tissues and for monocytes in cell populations devoid of granulocytes. A further two mAb (IL-A23 and IL-A25) recognize monocytes and/or macrophages. The reactivity of one of these mAb (IL-A25) appears to be mainly restricted to pulmonary macrophages. The other mAb reacts with a variable proportion of blood monocytes and generally with a higher percentage of tissue macrophages, suggesting that its expression may relate to activation or maturation of monocytes. In order to study the functional properties of peripheral blood monocytes, techniques were developed for obtaining populations of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBM) depleted of monocytes to less than 0.2% and monocyte populations of greater than 97% purity. Removal of monocytes from PBM abrogated the capacity of the cells to proliferate in response to Con A and PBS, although addition of 2-mercaptoethanol to the cultures restored proliferation. In both allogeneic and autologous mixed leukocyte cultures (MLC), monocytes were required in the stimulator cell populations for induction of the proliferative responses, and both responses could be elicited with purified monocytes. However, proliferation in the autologous MLC occurred only with responder cell populations that were depleted of monocytes. Moreover, it was shown that addition of more than 5% unirradiated monocytes to the autologous MLC suppressed proliferation. These findings indicate that monocytes play an important role in the induction and regulation of cellular immune responses in cattle. A review of the literature indicates heat stress generally causes lower milk production, decreased growth rate for cattle and lambs, but little effect on wool production. Breed and diet affects the degree of adverse response. Heat stress is caused primarily by high air temperature, but can be intensified by high humidity, thermal radiation and low air movement. Improving performance of animals under warm conditions involves breeding and management and modifying the environment. The former includes selection for heat tolerance, use of crossbred animals, diets with low heat increment in relation to energy for production and control of diseases and parasites. Environmental modifications may include provision of shades, use of water for evaporative cooling and increased air movement.  相似文献
