Advances in electronics and computers have enabled industries to attain better control of their processes with resulting increases in quality, productivity, profitability, and compliance with government regulations. With a hierarchy of computers, distributed data acquisition, and information processing and control, it is possible to achieve overall optimum performance of a plant. Voyager 2, during its encounter with the Jupiter system, provided images that both complement and supplement in important ways the Voyager 1 images. While many changes have been observed in Jupiter's visual appearance, few, yet significant, changes have been detected in the principal atmospheric currents. Jupiter's ring system is strongly forward scattering at visual wavelengths and consists of a narrow annulus of highest particle density, within which is a broader region in which the density is lower. On Io, changes are observed in eruptive activity, plume structure, and surface albedo patterns. Europa's surface retains little or no record of intense meteorite bombardment, but does reveal a complex and, as yet, little-understood system of overlapping bright and dark linear features. Ganymede is found to have at least one unit of heavily cratered terrain on a surface that otherwise suggests widespread tectonism. Except for two large ringed basins, Callisto's entire surface is heavily cratered.  相似文献

Changes in gene regulation are thought to have contributed to the evolution of human development. However, in vivo evidence for uniquely human developmental regulatory function has remained elusive. In transgenic mice, a conserved noncoding sequence (HACNS1) that evolved extremely rapidly in humans acted as an enhancer of gene expression that has gained a strong limb expression domain relative to the orthologous elements from chimpanzee and rhesus macaque. This gain of function was consistent across two developmental stages in the mouse and included the presumptive anterior wrist and proximal thumb. In vivo analyses with synthetic enhancers, in which human-specific substitutions were introduced into the chimpanzee enhancer sequence or reverted in the human enhancer to the ancestral state, indicated that 13 substitutions clustered in an 81-base pair module otherwise highly constrained among terrestrial vertebrates were sufficient to confer the human-specific limb expression domain.  相似文献

Standardized terminology for the porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) status of swine herds is necessary to facilitate communication between veterinarians, swine producers, genetic companies, and other industry participants. It is also required for implementation of regional and national efforts towards PRRSV control and elimination. The purpose of this paper is to provide a herd classification system for describing the PRRSV status of herds, based upon a set of definitions reflecting the biology and ecology of PRRSV. The herd classification system was developed by a definitions committee formed jointly by the American Association of Swine Veterinarians (AASV) and the United States Department of Agriculture PRRS-Coordinated Agricultural Project, and was approved by the AASV Board of Directors on March 9, 2010. The committee included veterinarians from private practice and industry, researchers, and representatives from AASV and the National Pork Board. Breeding herds, with or without growing pigs on the same premises, are categorized as Positive Unstable (Category I), Positive Stable (Category II), Provisional Negative (Category III), or Negative (Category IV) on the basis of herd shedding and exposure status. Growing-pig herds are categorized as Positive or Negative. Recommended testing procedures and decision rules for herd classification are detailed.  相似文献

Prairies exhibit a bimodal frequency distribution of patch occupancy with a few dominant species accounting for most of the primary production and plant biomass and numerous other species occurring infrequently over time and space. Consequently, management interest is often focused on the abundance of common species, and on the persistence of less common species. We used spatially nested arrays of various sized plots to simultaneously measure species’ persistence and abundance at Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, Kansas. Larger plots captured more species, with 127 species identified at the 10-m scale. Smaller plots, however, provided useful frequency data for measuring the abundance of common species. We defined a plot frame size that delivers a frequency in a 20–50% target range as the optimal plot size, and the frequency of a species sampled at its optimal plot size is termed the optimized frequency. Optimized frequency was estimated for 27 common species for the years 2002–2006. Of the nine perennial grasses in this group, five exhibited significant interannual variation within the 5-yr period. Bouteloua curtipendula exhibited a significant linear change over the 5-yr period, decreasing in frequency over time. From year to year, changes in optimized frequency among the 27 common species varied in both their trajectory (i.e., the average change), and amplitude (i.e., the average magnitude of change). Between 2005 and 2006, the average change in optimized frequency was -9.1%, the only year with an overall declining trajectory. The declining trajectory between 2005 and 2006 was significantly different from the increasing trajectories observed between 2002 and 2003 and between 2004 and 2005. No significant differences were observed in amplitude. We offer these techniques for aggregating information from multiple spatial scales to characterize the amplitude and trajectory of community-wide changes as tools to help scientists convey the results of multiscale research projects to land managers.  相似文献

Fuel loading information is important for prescribed fire planning, evaluating wildfire risk, and understanding fire effects in grassland. Yet fuel loads in grasslands often go unmeasured because of the time required to clip plots and process samples, as well as limited access or proximity to a drying oven. We tested the digital photography biomass estimation technique for measuring fuel load in grasslands in two national parks in the eastern Great Plains. The method consists of using percentage image obstruction, as determined by digital photography, to estimate vegetation biomass based on a linear transformation (i.e., regressing dry clipped weights against percent digital obstruction). We used the technique with some modification and measured digital obstruction at two sites at Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield, Missouri (WICR), and three sites at Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, Kansas (TAPR). The method did not result in strong correlations at either of the two sites at WICR (Site 1: r2=0.02; Site 2: r2=0.32), but performed relatively well at TAPR (Site 1 [<1 yr since burn]: r2=0.82; Site 2 [2 yr since burn]: r2=0.57; Site 3 [1 yr since burn]: r2=0.88). Linear regressions for the three sites at TAPR did not differ in slope (P>0.05). In general, the denser the vegetation, the weaker the relationship between the vegetation biomass of clip plots and the percentage image obstruction of digital images. The digital photography technique may not be useful for estimating fuel loads in grasslands with relatively high biomass (>80 g · 0.1 m?2) or digital image obstruction >50%. Large amounts of litter may also potentially reduce the accuracy of the technique.  相似文献

This study evaluated the impact of time between the application of cell suspensions or cell-free filtrates of Bacillus subtilis strains SB01 or SB24 on soybean plants under field conditions and inoculation with Sclerotinia sclerotiorum on their effectiveness for suppression of S. sclerotiorum. The results showed that the cell suspensions of two strains provided greater effectiveness than the cell-free filtrates, but the suppression effectiveness decreased as the time between application in the field and S. sclerotiorum inoculation increased. The B. subtilis cell suspensions applied on soybean leaves for up to 10 days under field conditions were able to provide a significant (P < 0.01) reduction in disease severity by approximately 20–90% at 5 days after the S. sclerotiorum inoculation. When rated 15 days after S. sclerotiorum inoculation, plants treated with bacterial cells for ≤6 days reduced Sclerotinia stem rot severity by 15–70%. Most effectiveness was provided by the cell suspensions present on soybean leaves for <3 days under field conditions, which significantly (P < 0.01) reduced disease severity by 40–70% over 15 days. In comparison, the cell-free filtrates remaining on leaves for <6 days significantly (P < 0.01) reduced disease severity during the first 5 days after the inoculation, while the best cell-free filtrate treatments were those with ≤1-day intervals, which significantly (P < 0.01) reduced disease severity by 10–40% during 15 days after the inoculation. The effectiveness of B. subtilis was reduced when it rained after application.  相似文献

Components from the bast region of flax (Linum usitatissium) were removed by hand from seed flax and fiber flax and analyzed by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. Stems soaked in water were separated by hand into an outer layer, which consisted of epidermis with cuticle and parenchyma cells, and fiber bundles. Each of the two fractions were evaluated for chemical markers that could be used to predict the degree of retting and possibly fiber quality. The outer layer was subsequently treated with a mixed enzyme preparation to remove the carbohydrate portion, thus providing another fraction consisting primarily of cuticle. Four main constituent groups were investigated: dihydroxy fatty acids, long-chain fatty acids and alcohols, sterols, and aromatics. Long-chain fatty acids and alcohols located in the outer layer accounted for 80-92% of the total found in both fractions. Aromatics and sterols in the outer layer accounted for 29--72 and 27--67%, respectively, of the total and do not appear to be a reliable marker for the degree of retting. The best markers for retting were the dihydroxy fatty acids, of which 98--99% were accounted for in the outer layer. The main dihydroxy fatty acids were a mixture of 8,16- and 9,16-dihydroxyhexadecanoic acids and represented 87--89% of the total dihydroxy fatty acids measured. As a constituent of cuticle, this compound may serve as an excellent marker for indicating the degree of retting as well as a possible marker for fiber quality because this compound is almost always exclusively associated with the outer layer and not the fiber.  相似文献

The conventional means of measuring the fiber content of flax is time-consuming and laborious, and the results obtained vary with the analysis technique used. The plant tissues must first be "retted", a process by which the fibers are separated from the rest of the stem, either by indigenous organisms in the soil when the stems are left in the field or by water (anerobic bacteria) or enzymatic retting. The fiber content is then determined by mechanical or manual separation. In this study, fiber content of flax stems was measured rapidly and objectively by near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) using whole pieces of stem in a large cell, in reflectance mode. Compared to the conventional method, the standard error of performance of the NIRS method was between 0.96 and 1.45% (dry matter basis), depending on the model and data processing used. NIRS calibrations were generated by hand separation of fiber from water-retted specimens. The water retting procedure takes several days to complete and requires considerable trained labor to complete the hand separation step. The NIRS procedure was conducted on pieces of stem to simulate measurement in the field.  相似文献
