Water treatment systems are mandatory in recirculating aquaculture facilities facing existing regulations, but data on system efficiency, especially for marine species, are scarce. The present work aimed at contributing to the evaluation of the effluent characteristics and the performance of a combined outdoor biological and non-biological treatment system in an intensive turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) farm, operating under different hydraulic regimes. A preliminary study on the biofilter bacterial populations was also undertaken. Changes in effluent characteristics with pumping, season of the year and fish biomass were observed. The treatment system showed performance instability under the conditions assayed (outdoors, changeable recycle rates). Maximum removal of solids was observed in winter, with microscreen or biological filtration (up to 60%) and nitrite removal (40–98%) was achieved with ozonation. Reduction in ammonium levels was higher in summer, either mechanically (74%) or biologically (33%). Phosphate removal was higher in winter with both systems (37 and 60%, respectively). Compliance with Portuguese discharge standards was achieved. For improvements in the treatment loop, further studies on biofilter bacteria under outdoor conditions are needed, and biological denitrification is encouraged. Crops of bean are sensible to climate changes, especially water stress. One way to minimize this instability is through genetic breeding of root system character. Thus, the objective of this study was to identify genotypes with superior root system in the first segregating generation at three depths in the soil profile and also verify the occurrence of heterosis for the root system character. Evaluations were performed using the method of Bohm (Methods studying root systems. Springer, Berlin 1979) at three different depths (0–10, 10–20 and 20–30 cm), in the experimental area of the Institute of Molecular Genetics and Breeding, at the State University of Santa Catarina UDESC Lages-SC. Twelve segregating populations and four parents (BAF 09, BAF 07, BAF 50 and IPR Uirapuru) were assessed by comparison. The favorable genotypes to the progress of generations are: two, seven and three for depths up to 20 cm and three for depths up to 30 cm. The cross between the parents BAF 07 (black group) and BAF 50 (carioca group) presented wide genetic divergence, providing significant increase in the root system revealed by the analysis of their progenies. The selection of superior genotypes in the layer of 20–30 cm was limited because most genotypes have similar and poorly distribution. Due to the strong effect of the dominance component, heterosis occurred for root distribution in early generation. This fact may interfere in the selection of autogamous species of bean related to this genetic character.  相似文献

Evaluation of impacts of high CO2 atmospheric concentration is strategically important for the development of adaptation measures and sustainable crop management. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of increased atmospheric CO2 concentration on eucalypt rust (Puccinia psidii), C:N ratio, yield and chemical composition of essential oils and growth of eucalypt clonal plantlets. Two clones with different levels of rust resistance were studied: a Eucalyptus urophylla × E. camaldulensis hybrid (VM 01) and an E. urophylla (clone MN 463). The experiments were performed in open‐top chambers (OTCs) with CO2 mean concentrations (μmol mol?1) of 399 (unenclosed control), 412 (OTCs with ambient CO2 concentration) and 508 (OTCs with high CO2 concentration) and in closed chambers (CCs) with CO2 mean concentrations of 390, 405, 520 and 700. Increased atmospheric CO2 concentrations resulted in a decrease in rust pustules per leaf, uredinia per leaf area, spores per uredinia and area under the disease progress curve in VM 01 (hybrid) clonal plantlets. The disease did not occur in MN 463 clonal plantlets, which demonstrated that high CO2 concentrations did not change the level of rust resistance. Plant growth of the two clones was stimulated by up to 23% in height and 26% in stem diameter in OTCs and by 18% for both clones in CCs. An increased C:N ratio in leaves, stems and roots was observed only for the VM 01 clonal plantlets. Essential oils produced by VM 01 (2.8 g 100 g?1) and MN 463 (1.4 g 100 g?1), as well as the major essential oil compounds (80% 1.8‐cineole for VM 01; 50% 1.8‐cineole and 32% α‐pinene for MN 463), were not altered. In this study, increased concentrations of atmospheric CO2 favourably impacted eucalypt growth and reduced rust severity, while not influencing the production of essential oils.  相似文献

We evaluated the effect of a mouth-rinse prepared using Lippia sidoides essential oil (EO) in dogs with marginal gingivitis. German Shepherd dogs were distributed in two groups: control (control mouth-rinse) and EO (EO mouth-rinse). Both mouth-rinses were applied on the dogs' teeth every 2 days for 2 weeks. At day 0 and day 15, the scores for plaque-bacteria (P), calculus (C), gingivitis (G) and the inflammatory infiltrate (INF) were evaluated blindly. Atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) and brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) are cardiac hormones involved in electrolyte and fluid homeostasis. Our laboratory has investigated the use of ANP and BNP as diagnostic markers of cardiac disease in cats. We hypothesize that the cardiac distribution of ANP and BNP increases in cats with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). Accordingly, we evaluated the immunohistochemical distribution of ANP and BNP in hearts of four cats with naturally occurring HCM relative to five healthy controls. Indirect immunoperoxidase was performed with polyclonal immunoglobulin G against feline ANP (1-28) and proBNP (43-56). In control cats, ANP and BNP immunoreactivity was restricted to the atria. Staining for both peptides was most intense adjacent to the endocardial surface. Auricles stained more diffusely than atria for both peptides. The interstitial capillaries and nerve fibers within the heart were positive only for BNP. Atrial immunoreactivity for ANP and BNP was more diffuse and had a less distinctly layered pattern in HCM than in control cats. Ventricular cardiomyocytes of HCM cats were negative for ANP but stained lightly and diffusely for BNP. The capillaries and nerve fibers remained positive for BNP. We conclude that in cats with HCM, the cardiac distribution of ANP and BNP is more diffuse in the atria and that novel expression of BNP in the ventricular cardiomyocytes occurs.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of a hemoglobin-based oxygen carrier (HBOC-301) on left ventricular preload, afterload, contractility, and ventriculo-arterial coupling in anesthetized dogs. STUDY DESIGN: A prospective experimental study. ANIMALS: Seven adult male dogs weighing 2.3 to 2.7 kg. METHODS: The study was performed on intact, closed-chest, chloralose-anesthetized dogs. Heart rate, left ventricular end-systolic and end-diastolic volume and pressure, cardiac output, stroke volume, blood resistivity, mean arterial pressure (MAP), dP/dtmax, end-systolic elastance (Ees), systemic vascular resistance (SVR), effective arterial elastance (Ea), left ventricular-arterial coupling (Ees/Ea), and myocardial oxygen consumption (MVO2) were determined during a 90-minute infusion of 30 mL/kg (20 mL/kg/h) of HBOC-301 and for 90 minutes thereafter. RESULTS: The administration of HBOC-301 significantly decreased packed cell volume, blood resistivity, heart rate, cardiac output, and dP/dtmax and significantly increased left ventricular end-diastolic and end-systolic pressure, MAP, and SVR. The Ea, Ees, Ees/Ea and MVO2 did not change. CONCLUSIONS: HBOC-301 produced insignificant changes in load independent indexes of cardiac performance (Ees, E, Ees/Ea) in anesthetized dogs. The collective directional changes in these variables, however, in conjunction with significant increases in SVR were most likely responsible for a decrease in cardiac output. Increases in SVR and the volume load (30 mL/kg) contributed to increases in left ventricular end-diastolic pressure. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: HBOC-301 infusion should be monitored and administered cautiously to dogs with poor ventricular function.  相似文献

Resveratrol (RESV; trans-3,5,4'-trihydroxystilbene), a phytoalexin that is produced by some plants, among other effects has well-known antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory activities in mammals. In the present study, the effects of RESV on several functions of turbot, Psetta maxima (L.), kidney leucocytes (KLs) related to the innate and inflammatory responses were investigated. RESV exerted a dose-dependent inhibitory effect on the migratory response and on the production of reactive oxygen species in KL, after stimulation of the respiratory burst activity with phorbol myristate acetate (PMA). RESV also significantly inhibited the generation of the pro-inflammatory mediator prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)) in the supernatant of KL cultures stimulated with acidic sulphated polysaccharides (ASPs) from the seaweed Ulva rigida. The effects of the polyphenol on enzymatic activity and on myeloperoxidase (MPO) gene expression in neutrophils were also tested. It was found that RESV strongly inhibited intracellular and extracellular MPO activity, behaving as a noncompetitive and reversible inhibitor, and also induced a decrease in MPO mRNA levels in turbot neutrophils. These findings indicate that RESV exerts important modulatory effects on inflammatory responses in fish, and considering the importance of innate immunity in these vertebrates and the similarities with mammals, it may be possible to use fish for analysis of the effects of different substances on inflammatory responses.  相似文献
