BACKGROUND: An important part of the production area of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) in Belgium is located on the sandy soils of the provinces of Antwerp and Limburg where Meloidogyne chitwoodi (Golden), M. fallax (Karssen) and M. hapla (Chitwood) are present. The host plant status of ten bean cultivars for root‐knot nematodes was determined by evaluating penetration, development and egg mass formation after inoculation with second‐stage juveniles. RESULTS: The tested cultivars were poor to good hosts for M. chitwoodi, non‐hosts or bad hosts for M. fallax and excellent hosts for M. hapla. Significantly fewer M. fallax were found in the roots, and their development was delayed. Penetration of M. hapla took place over a longer period than that of M. chitwoodi and M. fallax. The number of mature females of M. chitwoodi in cv. Polder 6 weeks after inoculation was no different from that in other cultivars, although fewer egg masses were found on this cultivar in the screening test. There was no influence of M. chitwoodi on vegetative growth of cv. Polder. CONCLUSION: The differences found in host plant status of bean cultivars stress the importance of a correct diagnosis of the Meloidogyne species in agricultural fields. This study investigated volumetric capnography (VC) in detecting airway responsiveness following airway challenge using carbachol in seven sedated dogs via face mask. Nebulised saline was administered, followed by increasing concentrations of nebulised carbachol until airflow limitation occurred (EP). Dead space (DS) variables and shape indices of the VC curve were calculated automatically after entering arterial carbon dioxide tension. Airway DS, airway DS to tidal volume (V(T)) ratio and the intercept of slope 2 of the VC curve decreased significantly at EP by 10%, 13% and 16%, respectively, minute ventilation, V(T) and alveolar DS increased significantly at EP by 49%, 22% and 200%, respectively. We conclude that VC and derived indices may be used to verify a reaction to airway challenge caused by carbachol in sedated dogs.  相似文献

Placement of markers on anatomical landmarks represents a large source of error in three-dimensional kinematics. Our objectives were to test the accuracy and precision of a custom-made pointer and compare it to conventional skin markers in dogs. The pointer was first assessed by pointing at the surface of a spherical marker of known dimensions and position in space. Secondly, a point located cranio-distally to the lateral epicondyle was marked in 12 canine elbows with a Steinmann pin and reflective markers. Ability to locate a landmark was compared between the pointer and skin-mounted marker. The distance between experimental and true locations was compared between the two methods. A sphere was mathematically fitted through 29 collected points on the spherical marker. Centre, diameter and volume overlap of the fitted sphere were compared to that of the marker. A 0.729 mm bias was found indicating good accuracy. Residual values were small indicating good precision. The average distance between the true and experimental position of the anatomical landmarks were 9.55 ± 4.20 mm and 9.32 ± 3.28 mm for the pointer and the marker respectively. No significant differences were observed between the two methods. The pointer proved to be accurate and reliable for localizing virtual points and was at least equivalent to skin mounted markers for the detection of anatomical landmarks in the dog. It should prove useful in the localization of anatomical landmarks for kinematic analysis.  相似文献

Objective To study the analgesic potency of the α2‐agonist romifidine in the horse using both an electrical current and a mechanical pressure model for nociceptive threshold testing. In addition, a comparison was made with doses of detomidine and xylazine that produce equivalent degrees of sedation. Study design Randomized, placebo‐controlled, blinded cross‐over study. Animals Six adult Swiss warmblood horses, one mare and five geldings, weighing from 530 to 650 kg and aged 6–15 years. Methods Nociceptive thresholds were measured using an electrical stimulus applied to the coronary band and using a pneumatically operated pin pressing on the cannon bone. Measurements were made immediately before and every 15 minutes for 2 hours after IV injection of the test substances. Lifting of the foot indicated the test end point. Results The three α2‐agonists caused a temporary increase in nociceptive thresholds with a maximal effect within 15 minutes and a return to baseline levels within 1 hour. Using electrical current testing nociceptive thresholds were significantly different from placebo (mean ± SD) for detomidine at 15 minutes (from control 5.8 ± 0.9 to 23.3 ± 3.9 mA, p = 0.0066) and 30 minutes (from control 6.6 ± 1.1 to 18.8 ± 3.3 mA, p = 0.0091). The difference was significant for romifidine at 15 minutes only (from control 5.8 ± 0.9 to 18.7 ± 3.8 mA, p = 0.0066). With mechanical pressure testing nociceptive thresholds were significantly different from control for detomidine at 15 minutes (from 3.2 ± 0.2 to 6.2 ± 0.5 N, p = 0.00076) and 30 minutes (from 3.2 ± 0.7 to 5.7 ± 0.8 N, p = 0.0167). The difference was significant for xylazine at 15 minutes (from control 3.2 ± 0.2 to 5.6 ± 0.7 N, p = 0.0079). At 15 minutes the order of magnitude of the measured antinociceptive effect was significantly different between the two pain tests for both romifidine and detomidine, but not for xylazine. For romifidine, the increase of mean thresholds compared to placebo was 4.0 ± 1.3 times placebo levels with the electrical current test compared to 1.3 ± 0.3 times for the mechanical pressure test (p = 0.037). For detomidine, the increase of mean thresholds compared to placebo was 5.4 ± 1.7 times control levels with the electrical current test compared to 2.0 ± 0.2 times for the mechanical pressure test (p = 0.040). This represents a 2.7 (romifidine) and 3.4 times (detomidine) greater increase in thresholds using electrical current testing compared to the use of mechanical pressure testing. Conclusion and clinical relevance This study demonstrates the analgesic potential of α2‐agonists in the horse for somatic pain and that they can have quantitatively different antinociceptive effects according to the antinociceptive test used.  相似文献

Objective To determine whether predictable alveolar concentrations of sevoflurane are reliably produced in dogs when liquid sevoflurane is injected into closed circuit breathing systems, as calculated by Lowe's square‐root‐of‐time anaesthetic uptake model, and to confirm the validity of the model using soda lime and calcium hydroxide lime. Study design Prospective clinical study. Animals Eleven healthy dogs with a mean body mass of 34 ± 9 kg scheduled for pelvic limb orthopaedic surgery. Materials and methods Following pre‐anaesthetic medication, anaesthesia was induced with propofol and maintained with sevoflurane in a closed circle system. Epidural anaesthesia was performed with morphine and bupivacaine. Liquid sevoflurane was injected into the circuit by syringe, using dosages and time intervals derived from Lowe's square‐root‐of‐time anaesthetic uptake model. The target alveolar concentration chosen was 1.1 × MAC (2.6% end‐tidal sevoflurane). Either soda lime (group S; n = 6) or calcium hydroxide lime (Amsorb; group A; n = 5) were used for CO2 absorption. Sevoflurane concentration and the respiratory gas composition were measured with an infrared gas analyser. Results End‐tidal sevoflurane concentrations were close to the predicted value of 2.6% at 9 minutes (2.53 ± 0.1% group S; 2.60 ± 0.26% group A) and 16 minutes (2.55 ± 0.30 group S; 2.52 ± 0.28% group A) but declined thereafter to reach 50% (group S) and 64% (group A) of the predicted value at 121 minutes. There was a constant trend towards higher end‐tidal sevoflurane concentrations in group A but the difference was not statistically significant. Conclusions The square‐root‐of‐time model leads to significantly lower alveolar concentrations than expected, suggesting that the rate of sevoflurane uptake in dogs declines less rapidly than predicted. The use of Amsorb tends to reduce the deviation from predicted concentrations. Clinical relevance The model used in this study provided only an approximate guide to the volume of liquid sevoflurane required. Consequently, the definitive dose schedule must be based on measured anaesthetic concentrations and clinical monitoring.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo compare tidal volume estimations obtained from Respiratory Ultrasonic Plethysmography (RUP) with simultaneous spirometric measurements in anaesthetized, mechanically ventilated horses.Study designProspective randomized experimental study.AnimalsFive experimental horses.MethodsFive horses were anaesthetized twice (1 week apart) in random order in lateral and in dorsal recumbency. Nine ventilation modes (treatments) were scheduled in random order (each lasting 4 minutes) applying combinations of different tidal volumes (8, 10, 12 mL kg?1) and positive end-expiratory pressures (PEEP) (0, 10, 20 cm H2O). Baseline ventilation mode (tidal volume = 15 mL kg?1, PEEP = 0 cm H2O) was applied for 4 minutes between all treatments. Spirometry and RUP data were downloaded to personal computers. Linear regression analyses (RUP versus spirometric tidal volume) were performed using different subsets of data. Additonally RUP was calibrated against spirometry using a regression equation for all RUP signal values (thoracic, abdominal and combined) with all data collectively and also by an individually determined best regression equation (highest R2) for each experiment (horse versus recumbency) separately. Agreement between methods was assessed with Bland-Altman analyses.ResultsThe highest correlation of RUP and spirometric tidal volume (R2 = 0.81) was found with the combined RUP signal in horses in lateral recumbency and ventilated without PEEP. The bias ± 2 SD was 0 ± 2.66 L when RUP was calibrated for collective data, but decreased to 0 ± 0.87 L when RUP was calibrated with individual data.Conclusions and clinical relevanceA possible use of RUP for tidal volume measurement during IPPV needs individual calibration to obtain limits of agreement within ± 20%.  相似文献

结合形态与分子生物学特征对从河北省分离的40个异小杆类昆虫病原线虫种群进行鉴定,其主要形态特征(4个典型种群平均值):侵染性幼虫体长=550(520—610)μm,体宽=22.2(20—24)μm,尾长=85,7(80-88)μm,E%=112.5%(105%-119%);雄虫交合刺长度=36,8(33,75—39,0)μm,引带长度=17,9(16.3—20.0)μm,GS%=0,49(0.41—0.59),SW=1,25(1.15—1,43),与嗜菌异小杆线虫Heterorhabditis bacteriophora形态特征相近。经对其中二个典型种群的ITS-rDNA测序,其ITS1-rDNA序列与已知种类H.bacteriophora的ITS1-rDNA序列相差小于1,2%,和H.argentinensis的差异小于1,5%,而与其他种类的差异则高达18.7%以上。综合其形态与分子特征,确定河北省的异小杆类线虫为嗜菌异小杆线虫。  相似文献

Due to a recruitment decline of more than 90% in 30 years, the European eel (Anguilla anguilla L.) has been classified by IUCN as critically endangered. Although the species has been studied intensively to obtain knowledge to improve management, studies about the resident yellow stage are relatively scarce. In this study, 52 large female yellow eels were tagged with acoustic transmitters in a Belgian polder system and tracked by a network of 23 automatic listening stations. We studied both circadian and seasonal movement patterns and the effect of environmental variables on these patterns. Large female yellow eels were most active at night in late summer and early autumn. A generalised linear mixed model showed that their movement is only slightly influenced by environmental variables. Moreover, as yellow eels show high site fidelity (i.e., the majority was detected only in the habitat type of their catch‐release location), they do not encounter many human‐induced connectivity problems in polder systems, which makes these systems highly suitable as eel growth habitat. These results can contribute to an effective eel management regarding habitat protection and restoration.  相似文献

A dose of supplementary ketamine was used to evaluate the anaesthetic sparing effect of adding local anaesthesia to general anaesthesia in cats undergoing ovariectomy. Fifty-six healthy cats were randomly assigned to receive lidocaine 2% (group L) as skin infiltration (1 mg kg(-1)), topical application (splash block) on both the ovaries (2 mg kg(-1), each) and on abdominal muscular layers (1 mg kg(-1)), or an equal volume of NaCl 0.9% at the same sites (group S). Anaesthesia was induced with a mixture of 20 microg kg(-1) medetomidine and 5 mg kg(-1) ketamine administered intramuscularly. Rectal temperature, ECG, heart rate and respiratory rate were measured continuously. Ketamine supplemental boli (1 mg kg(-1), intravenously) were administered in response to movements during surgery. Local lidocaine significantly reduced the need for supplementary ketamine. All animals were returned to their owners without complications. With this protocol, local anaesthetics reduced the need for injectable anaesthetic during feline ovariectomy.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo evaluate the effect of local anaesthesia of the mesovarium on end-tidal isoflurane (Fe′iso) concentration and vital parameters during canine ovariohysterectomy.Study designProspective, randomized, blinded study.AnimalsTwenty client-owned dogs undergoing elective ovariohysterectomy. Mean age 1.7 (±0.53, SD) years and mean body weight 21 kg (±5.9, SD).MethodsPre-medication was with intravenous acepromazine (0.02 mg kg−1) and methadone (0.1 mg kg−1). Anaesthesia was induced with propofol and maintained with isoflurane in oxygen. One group (n = 10) received local infiltration of the mesovarium with 0.5 mL lidocaine 2% and one group (n = 10) with 0.5 mL NaCl 0.9%. Heart (HR) and respiratory rates (fr), invasive mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) and Fe′isowere recorded. The Fe′iso was adjusted according to changes in HR, RR and MAP. Time points used for comparison were T1 (after induction of anaesthesia before surgery), T2 (after lidocaine infiltration of the mesovarium) and T3 (surgical manipulation of the ovaries). Data were analysed using a mixed model for repeated measurement anova and the Tukey adjustment. Results are presented as mean ± SD; p < 0.05 was considered significant.ResultsIn both groups, HR and fr remained stable at the three time points. Mean values ranged from 84 to 94 beats minute−1 and from 10 to 14 breaths minute−1. The Fe′iso was significantly lower at T3 compared to T1 and mean values ranged from 0.95% to 1.24%. The mean arterial blood pressure was significantly higher at T3 compared to T1 and mean values ranged from 58 to 96 mm Hg. At none of the time points were there significant differences between the two groups for HR, fr, MAP or Fe′iso.ConclusionNeither an isoflurane sparing effect nor a difference in autonomic response to surgery was demonstrated following local anaesthesia of the mesovarium.Clinical relevanceThere appeared to be minimal benefit from local anaesthesia of the mesovarium during this study.  相似文献
