In order to improve the management of temperate alley cropping, it is important to study the growth and physiological responses of plants arising from competition across the crop-tree interface. Maize (Zea mays L.) was established between rows of seven-year-old silver maple (Acer saccharinum L.) trees in north-central Missouri, USA with four imposed treatments: (1) an unmodified control with a standard rate of N fertilization (179.2 kg N (as NH4NO3) ha−1), (2) trenching with root barrier installed, (3) supplemental fertilization treatment (standard N + 89.6 kg ha−1 N), and (4) a combination of trenching with root barrier and supplemental fertilization. Whereas soil N status had little effect on maize physiology and yield at the interface, competition for soil water was substantial in both years. Without a root barrier, soil water content, predawn and midday water potential, and midday net photosynthesis of maize plants adjacent to the tree row were reduced compared with those of plants in the alley center, but no differences across the maize crop were evident in the presence of a barrier. Grain yield of border row maize plants lacking an adjacent barrier was depressed compared with that for maize plants with a root barrier present (8.42 vs. 6.59 Mg ha−1 in 1997; 5.38 vs. 3.91 Mg ha−1 in 1998). However, the barrier did not completely restore yield to that in the alley center, suggesting that reductions in light near the tree row also limited production. Top ear height showed a similar pattern of response to the presence of a root barrier. Silver maple trees responded to root barrier installation with reduced annual diameter growth and reduced water status on some sample days. A technique was tested for obtaining water relations parameters from individual fascicles of loblolly pine needles by the pressure-volume curve method. Comparisons were made between parameters derived from (1) individual fascicles that were rehydrated in a pressure chamber after being removed from the shoot and (2) fascicles that were rehydrated on the shoot. Estimates of tissue osmotic potential for needles rehydrated by the two methods were significantly different for needles from terminal shoots, but not significantly different for needles from lateral shoots. Similarly, a significant difference in the estimated tissue elasticity at zero water potential was noted for needles on terminal shoots, but not for those on lateral shoots. It is suggested that differences due to rehydration method are related to the duration of the rehydration period and not the choice of technique. The use of fascicles of needles, rehydrated after detachment, allows repeated estimation of the tissue water relations of a single conifer shoot.  相似文献

Haustorial morphology of the cone-rust pathogen, C. conigenum, was investigated among naturally infected female strobili of three Guatemalan pines, P. maximinoi, P. pseudostrobus, and P. oocarpa. Among the three pine species, haustorial shapes and sizes were more variable in P. maximinoi and P. oocarpa than in P. pseudostrobus. The haustorial shapes and sizes were more variable in parenchyma cells of the cortex, xylem, and pith than in the cells in the phloem, xylem rays, and tracheids. The haustoria were also present in larger numbers in the parenchyma cells of the cortex, xylem, and pith than in phloem parenchyma cells and tracheids. In living cells, the tips of some haustoria were appressed to the host nuclei.  相似文献

Heat treatment of Pinus pinaster and Eucalyptus globulus woods, two important species in Portugal, was performed in the absence of air by steaming, inside an autoclave, for 2–12 h at 190–210°C. Mass losses increased with treatment time and temperature reaching 7.3% for pine and 14.5% for eucalypt wood. The wood behaviour with moisture was improved. The equilibrium moisture content decreased by 46% for pine and 61% for eucalypt, the dimensional stability increased (maximum anti-shrinking efficiency in the radial direction of 57 and 90% for pine and eucalypt, respectively) and the surface wettability was lowered. In relation to mechanical properties, the modulus of elasticity was little affected (maximum decrease of 5% for pine and 15% for eucalypt) but the bending strength was reduced (by 40% at 8% mass loss for pine and 50% at 9% mass loss for eucalypt wood). The variation of properties was related to treatment intensity and mass loss but significant improvements could already be obtained for a 3–4% mass loss without impairing the mechanical resistance. The response of eucalypt was higher than that of pinewood. Heat treatment of eucalypt wood shows an interesting potential to improve the wood quality for solid timber products.  相似文献

At the end of the growing season in late July, 20-month-old cork oak (Quercus suber L.) saplings were partially defoliated (63% of leaf area) to evaluate their ability to recover leaf area after defoliation. At 18 and 127 days after defoliation, changes in starch and nitrogen pools were determined in leaves and perennial organs, and variations in photosynthetic carbon uptake were investigated. To determine the role of stored nitrogen in regrowth after defoliation, plant nitrogen was labeled in the previous winter by enriching the nutrient solution with 15N. Plants recovered the lost leaf area in 127 days. Although there was remobilization of starch and nitrogen from leaves and perennial organs, the availability of resources for growth in the following spring was not decreased by defoliation. On the contrary, starch concentration in coarse roots was higher in defoliated saplings than in control saplings, presumably as a result of the higher net CO2 exchange rate in newly developed leaves compared with pre-existing leaves.  相似文献

The variability of fibre and ray dimensions was studied at three radial positions (10, 50 and 90% of radius) in 5 cork oaks (Quercus suber L.) approximately 40 years old. Uniseriate ray height and cell number as well as multiseriate ray height and width were measured in tangential sections. Fibre length, width and wall thickness were measured after maceration. The most striking features of cork oak wood were the large multiseriate rays and the frequent homocellular uniseriate rays. On average multiseriate rays were 5.16 mm high and 0.48 mm wide, and uniseriate rays contained 11 cells and were 227 μm high. Neighbour rays presented large dimensional differences but there was no radial variation and there were very small between-tree differences. The radial maintenance of high and wide rays was discussed as a means to improve water shortage in response to water stress. Fibre dimensions increased radially but differed little between trees: on average, 960–1,220 μm length, 18.40–21.49 μm width and 6.66–8.07 μm wall thickness. The ray pattern showed enough variation for visual appreciation while ensuring within and between-tree uniformity. The presence of rays has to be taken into consideration for designing wood drying programs.  相似文献

Understanding the historical development of indigenous systems will provide valuable information for the design of ecologically desirable agroforestry production systems. Such studies have been relatively few, especially in Amazonia. The agroforestry systems in Amazonia follow a trail that begins with the arrival of the first hunter-gatherers in prehistoric times, followed by the domestication of plants for agriculture, the development of complex societies rich in material culture, the decimation of these societies by European diseases, warfare, and slavery, the introduction of exotic species, and finally, the present-day scenario of widespread deforestation, in which agroforestry is ascribed a potential role as an alternative land use. Despite the upheavals which occurred in colonial times, greatly reducing the population of native tribes, a review of anthropological and ethnobiological literature from recent decades indicates that a great variety of indigenous agroforestry practices still exist, ranging from deliberate planting of trees in homegardens and fields to the management of volunteer seedlings of both cultivated and wild species. These practices result in various configurations of agroforestry systems, such as homegardens, tree/crop combinations in fields, orchards of mixed fruit trees, and enriched fallows. Together they constitute a stock of knowledge developed over millenia, and represent technologies that evolved along with the domestication of native forest species and their incorporation into food production systems. This knowledge is the basis for the principal agroforestry practice employed by farmers in Amazonia today, the homegarden, and has potential to contribute to the development of other agroforestry systems.  相似文献

In Coral and Conn Creek, northeastern Australia, the variations in concentrations of nitrate, phosphate, silicate, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and particulate organic carbon (POC) were measured over tidal cycles on five occasions and along each creek on four occasions. The fluxes of these five properties were then estimated using two methods. The first method is the socalled Eulerian method, whereby water flow and material concentration are measured at a fixed station near the creek mouth and the net flux is calculated by adding up flux increments over a tidal cycle. The second method first derives the longitudinal eddy diffusion coefficient from the salt mass balance equation and then calculates material fluxes from their observed gradients along the creek. The use of the latter method is permitted only in the absence of freshwater inputs.The Eulerian method was not sensitive enough to examine whether there was any statistically significant difference in fluxes of nutrients, DOC and POC between ebb and flood periods. This casts some doubt over the meaning of individual flux estimates. It is, however, worth mentioning that 17 out of 25 flux estimates were positive (= import) in Coral Creek, whereas only eight positive flux estimates occurred in Conn Creek. In Coral Creek, the average flux values for nitrate, phosphate and DOC were positive, but negative for silicate and POC. In contrast, the average flux values for all properties were negative in Conn Creek. This may be due to the difference in amount of freshwater input between Coral and Conn Creek.The presence of freshwater inputs from upstream sources restricted the use of the salt mass balance equation to the Coral Creek data collected in September, 1996. However, the study of the variability of nutrient, DOC and POC concentrations along the creek could provide valuable insight into their behavior in Coral and Conn Creek. For example, the concentrations of silicate and DOC were consistently higher upstream than downstream and the distance–concentration relationship was statistically significant in seven out of eight measurements. The concentrations of nitrate and POC also decreased from upstream to downstream, but the trend was statistically significant in only 2–3 measurements. The concentration of phosphate was higher downstream than upstream in four measurements and in two of these four measurements, the trend was statistically significant. These results suggest that in Coral and Conn Creek, silicate and DOC are usually exported to adjacent coastal waters, whereas the import and export of nitrate, phosphate and POC are often finely balanced.  相似文献

The aim of this work is to study Lithuanian stakeholders' perceptions of fire impacts in protected areas. For this study, the stakeholders consisted of foresters, ecologists and farmers. A clear understanding of the opinions of stakeholders about fire effects on environmental, social and economic aspects of Lithuanian protected areas will allow an assessment of the stakeholders' reaction to fire policy, including government measures towards fire prevention, suppression and application of prescribed fire to landscape management. The results showed that stakeholders in general think that fire is not a threat to Lithuania and to the ecological processes in the protected areas. However, they agree that fires have negative impacts on soil properties and fertility but are not to an irremediable or irrecoverable extent. Stakeholders disagree that fire has positive consequences for agricultural and cattle activities but agreed that vegetation recovers quickly. They do not see fire as a social and economic problem, do not agree that prescribed fire could be used to landscape management, and believe that mechanical thinning is a better management tool than prescribed fire. Stakeholders agree that fire does not have negative impacts on the biodiversity. These opinions depended on the age group of the respondent but especially on the respondent's professional occupation. OBJECTIVE: To quantify the potential effect of iron defortification in the USA on iron-deficiency anaemia (IDA). METHODS: Monte Carlo models were built to simulate iron nutrition in the US population. A hypothetical cohort of 15 000 persons from the general population was used in 15-year simulations to compare the prevalence of IDA with and without fortification. RESULTS: With iron fortification, the prevalence of IDA was 2.4% for children aged 3-5 years, 5.4% for women aged 20-49 years, and 0.14% for men aged 20-49 years. The corresponding IDA estimates under iron defortification were 4.5%, 8.2% and 0.46%, respectively. Defortification had little effect on the distribution of iron indicators at or above the 50th percentile within each of these three groups and little effect on the distributions of iron indicators among adult men. CONCLUSION: Iron defortification is likely to increase IDA among children and women of reproductive age, but is not likely to have meaningful effects on the iron status of men or the majority of women and children.  相似文献
