The study of predator–prey interactions is commonly analyzed using functional responses to gain an understanding of predation patterns and the impact they have on prey populations. Despite this, little is known about predator–prey systems with multiple prey species in sites near the equator. Here we studied the functional response of cougars (Puma concolor) in relation to their main prey, armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus), coati (Nasua narica) and white‐tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus). Between 2004 and 2010, cougar scats were collected along 5 transects to estimate the consumption of different prey species. A relative abundance index (RAI) was calculated for each prey species and cougar using 18 camera traps. We compared Holling type I, II and III functional response models to determine patterns in prey consumption based on the relative abundance and biomass of each prey species consumed. The 3 main prey species comprised 55% (armadillo), 17% (coati) and 8% (white‐tailed deer) of the diet. Type I and II functional responses described consumption of the 2 most common prey species armadillos and coati similarly well, while a type I response best characterized consumption of white‐tailed deer. A negative correlation between the proportions of armadillo versus coati and white‐tailed deer biomass in cougar scats suggests switching to consume alternative prey, confirming high foraging plasticity of this carnivore. This work represents one of the few studies to compare functional responses across multiple prey species, combined with evidence for prey‐switching at low densities of preferred prey. 相似文献

BACKGROUND: As epidemiological studies have become more complex, demands for short, easily administered measures of risk factors have increased. This study investigates whether such a measure of physical activity is associated with the risk of death from all causes and death from specific causes. METHODS: A prospective follow-up study of 11,090 men and women, aged 35-64 years, recruited from five UK general practices who responded to a postal questionnaire in 1989. Self-reported frequency of vigorous-intensity physical activity and data on confounding factors were collected at baseline survey. Death notifications up to 31 December 2001 were provided by the Office for National Statistics. The relative risk (and 95% confidence interval) of dying associated with each level of exposure to physical activity was estimated by the hazard ratio in a series of Cox regression models. RESULTS: After >10 years' follow-up there were 825 deaths among the 10 522 subjects with no previous history of angina or myocardial infarction. Participation in vigorous exercise was associated with a significantly lower risk of all-cause mortality. Similar associations were found for ischaemic heart disease and cancer mortality, although the relationships were not significant at the 5% level. CONCLUSIONS: Simple measures of self-reported vigorous physical activity are associated with the risk of future mortality, at least all-cause mortality in a somewhat selected group. Interpretation of the finding should be treated with caution due to the reliance on self-report and the possibility that residual confounding may underlie the associations. Because moderate-intensity physical activity is also beneficial to health, short physical activity questionnaires should include measures of such physical activity in the future. 相似文献

During the last decade, advances in computational techniques and in the extraction of chemically useful concepts from electronic wave functions have put theorists into the mainstream of chemistry. Some recent examples of the prediction of spectroscopic quantities and the elucidation of catalytic processes for homogeneous and heterogeneous reactions from theoretical calculations are used to illustrate how theory and experiment are now full partners in chemical research. It is expected that during the next decade the thrust of theoretical chemistry will be to combine the knowledge of fundamental chemical steps and fundamental interactions with advances in chemical dynamics and irreversible statistical mechanics and in computer technology to produce simulations of chemical systems with competing reactions taking place simultaneously at various reaction sites. Due to genetic diversity within and among switchgrass (Panicum virgatum), there may be genotype x environment and management-induced differences among secondary cell walls. Consequently, two separate experiments were conducted to determine feedstock variance using near-infrared spectrometry (NIRS). One experiment tested legume-intercrops [red clover (RC; Trifolium pratense), crimson clover (CC; Trifolium incarnatum), hairy vetch (HV; Vicia villosa), and partridge pea (PP; Chamaechrista fasciculata)], nitrogen (N) fertilization (0, 67, and 135 kg-N ha?1), and location impacts on characteristics. The second one determined on-farm bale variance within and across locations. Clustering NIRS data indicated that chemical signatures differed among locations and N-levels, but less so among intercrops. Results suggest that homogeneity may vary within a region responsible for supplying biomass to a biorefinery. Thus, conversion efficiencies and enzymatic requirements for ethanol production may be affected. Consequently, legumes may displace inorganic-N with minimal compositional changes, whereas location and N-level influence feedstock quality and recalcitrance level to a greater extent. 相似文献

In grassed-down apple orchards in New Zealand, the understorey vegetation is usually mown and the plant residues are returned to the orchard floors as a source of nutrients. It is, therefore, important to determine the decomposition pattern and the rate of N release from understorey plant residues. In this study, the decomposition and N release of surface-placed understorey plant residues were determined in the field and compared across treatments of grassed-down biological (BFP) and integrated fruit production (IFP) orchards in two different locations (Lincoln and Clyde) in New Zealand using the litterbag technique. At Lincoln, the field experiment was a randomised complete block design with three different treatments (two BFPs, one IFP) each with three replicates; while at Clyde, the field experiment consisted of non-replicated apple orchard plots with three treatments (two IFPs, one BFP). A comparison was also made between surface-placed and soil-buried understorey plant residues in a BFP orchard at one location. Samples of understorey plant residues collected from orchard mowings in the respective treatments were returned to the same treatment plot in litterbags and retrieved at intervals of 90 days for 360-450 days. Results showed that the single exponential decay model, Y=A0 e-kt, accounted significantly (PА.001) for 97-99% of the variation in the decomposition and N release patterns, which ranged from 6.0᎒-3-9.6᎒-3 day-1 and 7.0᎒-3-13.0᎒-3 day-1, respectively. Half-lives for C and N of residues were approximately 70-120 days and 50-110 days, respectively. Soil-buried plant residues showed more rapid decomposition and N release compared with those of surface-placed plant residues (80% vs. 54% in 90 days). In general, plant residue decomposition and N release were significantly more rapid in IFP than in BFP treatments (13.0᎒-3 vs 7.0᎒-3 day-1 for N release). Overall, differences in plant residue decomposition and N release rates related to understorey plant residue quality and treeline management practices rather than the orchard system as a whole. 相似文献
