Eight of the 11 surviving races of Galápagos tortoises are threatened due to decreased population sizes and predation and/or competition by introduced mammals. Systematic hunting has been effective for controlling and even eliminating goats on the less elevated, more sparsely vegetated, smaller islands and for controlling pigs, even on some of the larger islands. However, the method has been ineffective against dogs and cats and it is doubtful that it could be used to eliminate goats or pigs on the more elevated, larger islands which have a diversity of vegetation zones. Alternative control or extermination methods are being sought and tested for these feral mammals and black rats. In an attempt to increase yearly recruitment of hatchlings, lava corrals have been constructed around nests, resulting in almost 100 per cent success in preventing nest destruction by pigs; but the method was ineffective against dogs. While other control methods are being sought, young of the endangered races are being hatched and raised in captivity for restocking of endemic populations. During the past seven years, improved and highly successful techniques have been found for (1) establishment of breeding colonies and construction of artificial nesting sites, (2) transport of eggs from wild nests, (3) incubation of eggs, and (4) raising of young in captivity. By August 1972, 231 young of six races were being raised, and 71 4·5–6·5 year old captive raised tortoises released on Pinzón in 1970 and 1971 were in good condition and growing rapidly. The advantages of conducting the breeding/raising programme in the Galápagos rather than foreign locations are discussed. 相似文献

Eleven of the original 15 races of Galápagos tortoises are known to survive. The populations of three of these may be self-replacing. The other eight are threatened with extinction, each by one or more of the following: (1) greatly decreased population size, (2) predation on nests and/or young by introduced pigs, dogs, cats, or black rats, and (3) competition for food resources with feral populations of goats or donkeys. Human exploitation of the tortoise populations has become relatively unimportant in the past few years for a number of reasons, including more wide-spread acceptance of protective laws and the increasing activity of the Servicio del Parque Nacional Galápagos and the Charles Darwin Research Station. Data on population sizes and sex structures, reproductive potential, and natural mortality rates suggest that all but two of the endangered populations could remain stable or even increase in size if the effects of introduced mammals were eliminated or greatly lessened. 相似文献

The bengamides comprise an interesting family of natural products isolated from sponges belonging to the prolific Jaspidae family. Their outstanding antitumor properties, coupled with their unique mechanism of action and unprecedented molecular structures, have prompted an intense research activity directed towards their total syntheses, analogue design, and biological evaluations for their development as new anticancer agents. Together with these biological studies in cancer research, in recent years, the bengamides have been identified as potential antibiotics by their impressive biological activities against various drug-resistant bacteria such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Staphylococcus aureus. This review reports on the new advances in the chemistry and biology of the bengamides during the last years, paying special attention to their development as promising new antibiotics. Thus, the evolution of the bengamides from their initial exploration as antitumor agents up to their current status as antibiotics is described in detail, highlighting the manifold value of these marine natural products as valid hits in medicinal chemistry. 相似文献

A new species and genus of Microcoryphia is described as a result of the detailed comparison of specimens from Italy and Spain which had been initially identified as Praemachilis excelsior. The new genus, named Mendeschilis has as its most important distinctive taxonomic characteristic the presence, in the male, of parameres in the VIIIth and IXth urosternites, while Praemachilis (from Italy) has only one pair of parameres in the IXth urosternite. Selection on the best estimate of the breeding value of individuals should, in large populations, provide the maximal response in breeding value. However, many breeders deal with the selection of small numbers of animals from relatively small populations and therefore there is a trend for inbreeding to rise because of genetic drift. Moreover, as the evaluation of candidates is traditionally based on methodologies including information from relatives [selection indices, best linear unbiased predictor (BLUP)] more individuals are selected from the best families and so closely related individuals will generate most of the offspring. This effect is more important for traits with low heritability as phenotype gives little information on the breeding value of the individuals and more weight is given to relatives’ data. The need for controlling inbreeding refers not only to a better use of the genetic variability available and to a reduced inbreeding depression in the selected trait, but also to a reduced depression of fitness-related traits, which may be the most serious drawback at present due to the increase in inbreeding in domestic populations (M euwissen and W oolliams 1994). In recent years considerable work has been carried out on the design of strategies to maintain genetic diversity in selection programmes. These strategies are aimed at simultaneously optimizing genetic gain and inbreeding, either by reducing the rate of inbreeding (or variance of response) while keeping genetic gains at a predetermined level, or by increasing selection response under a restriction on inbreeding (or on variance of response). Following T oro and P& eacute ; rez -E nciso (1990) the different strategies can be classified according to the factor on which they act: (i) the selection criterion used; (ii) the mating system imposed; (iii) the number of selected individuals and their contribution to the next generation. The first group of strategies proposes the use of a suboptimal selection criterion that reduces the weight given to family information or the use of an upward-biased heritability in BLUP evaluation (T oro and P& eacute ; rez -E nciso 1990; see G rundy et al. 1998a for the latest development of this idea). The second group of strategies proposes action on the mating system including factorial mating designs, minimum co-ancestry mating (using linear programming) or compensatory mating (see review by C aballero et al. 1996). The third group of strategies includes the ones considered in the present work. The first possibility is to modify the contribution of the selected individuals of generation t to the selected individuals of generation t + 1, by practising some form of within-family selection with respect to BLUP values. Two strategies of this type were considered: modified within-family selection (MWFS) and restricted co-ancestry selection (RCS). The second possibility is to modify the contribution of the selected individuals of generation t to the evaluated individuals of generation t + 1 (instead of to the selected individuals) by a strategy called weighted selection (T oro and N ieto 1984). Three strategies were considered in this case: weighted selection (WS), restricted co-ancestry weighted selection (RCWS) and pair weighted selection (PWS). More specifically, the aim of the present paper is to show how these five strategies can be implemented using mathematical programming techniques. Little is known about the reproduction of the Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus) even though it is the most endangered felid in the world. We studied during 9 years several reproductive parameters of the Iberian lynx in one of the subpopulations situated in Doñana National Park (south-western Spain), by means of radio-tracking, direct observations and photo-trapping. The potential breeding subpopulation was usually composed of 3 adult females, which bred 83% of the total possible 29 female-reproductive year. The minimum total number of cubs born during the study was 64 (7.7 ± 0.69 per year). There was no correlation between the number of cubs born or number of breeding females and population size of European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus, the main prey of the lynx). All known births (n = 16) occurred in March except one in April and another in June. Mean litter size was 3.0 ± 0.16 (n = 16, range = 2-4). Sex-ratio (n = 59 cubs) was 1.03:1.00 (females:males). Nevertheless, the commonest picture was a female with 2 cubs older than 3 months. Altogether, at age of 3 months, 75% of cubs survived. Number of lynx alive at 10 months old and before dispersing was 69% and 57%, respectively. Sex did not affect survival for any age. Normally, it was not possible to know the causes of the death of cubs younger than 3 months. Survival at this age was not related with mother, mother age, or rabbit abundance. All females that bred were older than 3 years. The age of last reproduction was 9 years. For 3 females that were tracked during almost their complete reproductive life, the life time reproductive output was between 11 and 19 cubs. Iberian lynx reproductive parameters did not respond to wide changes in prey abundance during the study. Conservation plans considering the extraction of cubs with a low survival probability should be considered by managers, for instance, in translocation campaigns. 相似文献

A healthy lifestyle includes fruits and vegetables consumption. Tomato is one of the most consumed vegetables, although it is susceptible to physical damage through postharvest handling, thus leading to important losses. Softening is an important variable during tomato ripening; excessive softening is undesirable and leads to postharvest losses. TomloxB plays an important role in ripening, mainly in the loss of cellular integrity caused by fatty acids released from the lipid matrix of membranes that initiate oxidative deterioration, which is in turn carried into senescence. In order to increase postharvest life, we produced transgenic tomato plants via Rhizobium radiobacter with tomato lipoxygenase B (TomloxB) antisense constructs under control of the cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV) 35S promoter. Lipoxygenase activity and firmness were measured in tomato fruit and the fatty acids profile was determined. Transgenic fruits were maintained for 40 days at room temperature in optimal conditions, whereas wild type fruits remained in similar conditions for only six days. Firmness in pink and red stages was significantly lower in wild type fruits than in two transgenic lines. Linolenic acid was the most important fatty acid consumed by lipoxygenase in both turning and pink stages of ripening. Lipoxygenase activity was smaller in transformed fruits in comparison with the wild type. These results suggest that silencing the TomloxB gene promoted significant changes in the physiology of transformed tomatoes, being the increase in postharvest life the most important. 相似文献

This study aimed to determine the maximum time of emersion of Senegalese sole (Solea senegalensis) specimens to form the basis for a dry sole transport procedure. For this purpose, 56 specimens (922.33 ± 29.52 g body weight) were individually placed in polystyrene boxes on a wet cloth, maintaining constant temperature (15°C) during emersion trial. Specimens (n = 7 per group) were sampled for plasma, and mortality was monitored at different points (0, 2, 6, 12, 20, 28, 36 and 44 h of emersion), and several stress (cortisol, glucose and lactate) and metabolic (triglycerides, proteins and amino acids) parameters were assessed. After sampling, each experimental group was placed in recovery tanks for the assessment of delayed mortality and feeding performance after emersion trial. Transport periods longer than 28 h produced high stress level indicated by (i) significant increase in circulating cortisol and lactate and (ii) glucose reserves mobilization. These alterations originated physiological problems during the emersion trial that induced mortality as well as problems for recovering correct feeding performance of specimens. These results suggested that at 15°C for S. senegalensis specimens (around 900 g body weight), a waterless transport is possible without direct or delayed mortality up to 28 h. 相似文献

In this work, a seasonal quantile regression growth model for the gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata L) based on an aggregation of the quantile TGC models with exponent 1/3 and 2/3, named the “Quantile TGC‐Mixed Model”, is presented. This model generalizes the proposal of Mayer, Estruch and Jover (Aquaculture, 358‐359, 2012, 6) in the sense that the new model is able to describe the evolution of weight distribution throughout an entire production cycle, which could be a powerful tool for fish farm management. The information provided by the model simulations enables us to estimate total fish production and final fish size distribution and helps to design and simulate production and sales plan strategies considering the market price of different fish sizes, in order to increase economic profits. The most interesting alternative in the studied case results in sending all production when 0.25 quantile fish reach 600 g, although on each fish farm it would be necessary to evaluate optimum strategy depending on its own quantile regression model, the production cost and the market price. 相似文献

Drying experiments were conducted at different temperatures and air flux velocities to determine the proper drying conditions for reducing moisture in commercial fish feed impregnated with probiotic lactic acid bacteria and to assess the effect on bacteria viability over time. At temperatures of 45°C, the drying time was shorter, without the air flux velocity under study having a relevant influence. The drying conditions influenced the viability of the bacteria in the feed; the least loss of viability was obtained with a velocity of 0.8 m s?1 and a temperature of 45°C during 15 min. Using these drying conditions, 5 kg of feed was dried and stored for a month at temperature of 26°C and relative humidity of 75%. The viability of the bacteria and the moisture of the feed were measured every 3 days during the storage period. Loss of viability followed first order kinetics, with a constant k of 0.112 days?1. Thus, the viability of the bacteria in the feed is less than 106 CFU g?1 after 43 days. 相似文献
