ABSTRACT

Melamine resins (MR), widely used in various industries, are thermosetting plastics that have hard and durable properties. These resins can be introduced into the environment as components of waste products or via industrial effluents. It is important to seek environmentally friendly means to recycle, remove, or degrade melamine resins before they are released to the environment. Waste paint sludge containing MR has been shown to be efficiently composted under bench-scale conditions. In this study, the impacts of C/N ratios on windrow composting of waste paint sludge containing MR were evaluated. As composting proceeded, temperature, concentrations of MR and melamine degradation products (i.e., ammeline, ammelide, and cyanuric acid) were determined. After 98 days of composting, 87.5, 83.3, 80.9, and 70.1% of the initial MR were degraded under the treatments with C/N ratios of 30, 33, 35, and 37, respectively. Degradation of MR was enhanced by relatively low C/N ratios. Significant amounts of plant nutrients were found in the final composts, while heavy metals were well below values considered to be of concern regarding surface water quality or crop production. We conclude that adjusting C/N ratio to approximately 30 in the initial mixtures with oat and hay straws can increase the degradation of MR and its derivatives during windrow composting of waste paint sludge containing MR and produce a good quality compost product.  相似文献

There is no data concerning the fatty acid and triacylglycerol composition of French virgin olive oil. Thus, these compositions were determined using 564 samples coming from four olive harvests (1998-1999 to 2000-2001). Among these 564 samples, 372 came from the four main French cultivars (Aglandau, Cailletier, Picholine, and Salonenque) and from both of the oldest French protected designations of origin: "Nyons" (cv. Tanche) and "Vallée des Baux". The fatty acid compositions took the different isomeric monounsaturated fatty acids (C16:1 and C18:1) into account. The eicosenoic acid is gondoic acid (20:1n-9) and was determined by dimethyl disulfide adduct using GC/MS. The use of propionitrile as a mobile phase for the HPLC analysis of the triacylglycerols led to better resolutions between triacylglycerols than those resolutions obtained with the mix of solvents recommended by the normalized method (acetone/acetonitrile). Of the samples, 88 had a 9-heptadecenoic acid level (17:1n-8) higher than 0.3% and 33 had a linolenic acid level higher than 0.9%, which are maximal values accepted by the International Olive Oil Council and the European Union. A linear discriminant analysis was carried out on 372 samples with the SAS system and particularly with STEPISC and CANDISC procedures. Variables (n = 37) representing the different fatty acids, the sum of saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fatty acids, squalene, and triacylglycerols were used, thus allowing us to classify samples into six groups defined with 100% of well classified samples. These results constitute an original data bank that can be used to identify the origin of virgin olive oils.  相似文献

Bovine and possum macrophages were infected in vitro with a virulent strain of Mycobacterium bovis, and mycobacterial replication was measured in the infected macrophages cultured under a variety of conditions. Virulent M. bovis replicated substantially in alveolar possum macrophages as well as in bovine blood monocyte-derived macrophages. Addition of recombinant bovine interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) with low concentrations of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) rendered bovine macrophages significantly more resistant to M. bovis replication. Disruption of iron levels in infected macrophages by addition of apotransferrin or bovine lactoferrin blocked replication of M. bovis in both bovine and possum macrophages. On the other hand, addition of exogenous iron, either in the form of iron citrate or iron-saturated transferrin, rendered macrophages of both species much more permissive for the replication of M. bovis. The impact of iron deprivation/loading on the mycobacteriostatic activity of cells was independent of nitric-oxide release, as well as independent of the generation of oxygen radical species in both possum and bovine macrophages. Exogenous iron was shown to reverse the ability of IFN-gamma/LPS pulsed bovine macrophages to restrict M. bovis replication. When autologous possum lymphocytes from animals vaccinated with M. bovis strain BCG were added to infected macrophages, they rendered the macrophages less permissive for virulent M. bovis replication. Loading the cells with iron prior to this macrophage-lymphocyte interaction, reversed this immune effect induced by sensitized cells. We conclude that, in two important animal species, intracellular iron level plays an important role in M. bovis replication in macrophages, irrespective of their activation status.  相似文献

Panels of sera from African buffalo with confirmed bovine tuberculosis and from known uninfected controls were used to evaluate the performance of two commercial rapid chromatographic immunoassays (A and B) for the detection of antibodies to Mycobacterium bovis. The sensitivity was 33% and 23%, respectively, while the specificity was determined at 90% and 94%, respectively. Overall the performance of both diagnostic tests under field conditions was not found sufficiently high to support their use in bovine tuberculosis management and control strategies in South African game reserves.  相似文献

In vertebrates, water and osmolyte homeostasis is controlled by at least three hormonal systems: the hypothalamo-neurohypophysial system, the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and the atrial natriuretic factor system. The first system implies neuroendocrine reflexes involving an afferent neural limb from osmo- and baroreceptors to hypothalamus and an efferent endocrine limb from secretory neurons to target cell receptors and transduction to intracellular effectors, namely water and sodium channels. Evolution can affect any level of this molecular cascade. Whereas virtually all vertebrate species have two neurohypophysial hormones, an oxytocin-like and a vasopressin-like peptides, the most primitive vertebrates, Cyclostomata (lampreys and hagfishes) possess a single peptide, vasotocin, so that an early gene duplication occurred before the emergence of fishes, about 400 million years ago. The remarkable evolutionary stability of neurohypophysial hormones in bony vertebrates allows us to trace two main lineages: isotocin-mesotocin-oxytocin and vasotocin-vasopressin. In contrast, in cartilaginous fishes, the oxytocin-like peptides display a great evolutionary diversity: we have identified glumitocin in rays, aspargtocin and valitocin in the spiny dogfish, asvatocin and phasvatocin in the spotted dogfish, and oxytocin in the chimaera. Whereas bony vertebrates regulate their blood osmotic pressure (about 250–450 mOsm kg-1 H2O) essentially through salts, cartilaginous fishes use urea as the main osmolyte for adjusting their osmotic pressure above the external medium (about 1050 mOsm kg-1 H2O for marine fishes). The hypothesis is made that the stability of neurohypophysial hormones in bony vertebrates is due to their implication in ion-based osmoregulation (selective evolution), whereas in Chondrichthyes the occurrence of urea-based osmoregulation has relieved the hormones from this function and therefore made them free to vary (neutral evolution).  相似文献

Bottom trawling accounts for almost one quarter of global fish landings but may also have significant and unwanted impacts on seabed habitats and biota. Management measures and voluntary industry actions can reduce these impacts, helping to meet sustainability objectives for fisheries, conservation and environmental management. These include changes in gear design and operation of trawls, spatial controls, impact quotas and effort controls. We review nine different measures and actions and use published studies and a simple conceptual model to evaluate and compare their performance. The risks and benefits of these management measures depend on the extent to which the fishery is already achieving management objectives for target stocks and the characteristics of the management system that is already in place. We offer guidance on identifying best practices for trawl‐fisheries management and show that best practices and their likelihood of reducing trawling impacts depend on local, national and regional management objectives and priorities, societal values and resources for implementation. There is no universal best practice, and multiple management measures and industry actions are required to meet sustainability objectives and improve trade‐offs between food production and environmental protection.  相似文献

Acid silage of shellfish processing waste has been reported to be a good and economical technique to protect these biomasses from bacterial decomposition. Shrimp (Pandalus borealis) by-products contain some value-added nutrients for the aquaculture industry such as carotenoid pigments (mainly astaxanthin) and n − 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. The aim of this work was to determine the effect of ensiling shrimp waste during a long period of time (more than 3 months) on some unstable components such as the astaxanthin forms (free, mono- and diesterified) and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Comparisons of astaxanthin forms and the fatty acid profiles were performed on defrosted shrimp waste and on a 14-week-old shrimp waste silage. No significant difference (P ≥ 0.05) in the total lipids extracted from the two forms of shrimp waste was observed. Nevertheless, a small quantity of the red pigment, presumably an astaxanthin portion, was observed to stay firmly bound to the shrimp carapace after the solvent extraction in shrimp waste compared to the full recovery obtained in ensiled shrimp waste. This may explain the significantly (P < 0.05) higher concentration of total astaxanthin (4.57 vs 3.99 mg/g) found in the crude oil extracted from shrimp waste silage. Higher percentages (P < 0.01) of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) were found in esterified astaxanthin from shrimp waste silage (43.9% and 45.5%) in comparison with their shrimp waste (24.7% and 20.3%) counterparts. This suggests that EPA and DHA are the principal fatty acids esterified with the portion of astaxanthin linked to chitin in the shrimp carapace. The utilization of shrimp waste silage as a pigmenting component of salmonid feeds is also discussed.  相似文献

This paper confirms the important role of rodents to be maintenance hosts of leptospires. Their role is related to renal carriage and shedding of leptospires into urine, thus contaminating fresh water. Serological and carriage of feral rodents trapped in France were determined by MAT and hap1PCR specific for pathogenic leptospires. In same areas, fresh water samples were analyzed by hap1PCR. The overall seroprevalence was 44% in 649 rodents and was similar regardless of the species. Seroprevalence for leptospirosis is about 20-53% according to species. hap1PCR (516 kidneys) showed that renal carriage was higher in brown rats (34.7%) and muskrats (15.8%) than in coypus (3.3%). hap1PCR demonstrates a significative difference (P-value > 10(-12)) for the renal carriage between the different species: muskrats and rats are more efficient maintenance hosts than coypu but all infect water. Moreover 5/38 water samples associated with human cases were hap1PCR positive and 1/113 in controlled waters.  相似文献
