Central Greenland ice cores provide evidence of abrupt changes in climate over the past 100,000 years. Many of these changes have also been identified in sedimentary and geochemical signatures in deep-sea sediment cores from the North Atlantic, confirming the link between millennial-scale climate variability and ocean thermohaline circulation. It is shown here that two of the most prominent North Atlantic events-the rapid warming that marks the end of the last glacial period and the Bolling/Allerod-Younger Dryas oscillation-are also recorded in an ice core from Taylor Dome, in the western Ross Sea sector of Antarctica. This result contrasts with evidence from ice cores in other regions of Antarctica, which show an asynchronous response between the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether administration of phenobarbital, potassium bromide, or both drugs concurrently was associated with abnormalities in baseline serum total thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3), free T4, or thyrotropin (thyroid-stimulating hormone; TSH) concentrations in epileptic dogs. DESIGN: Prospective case series. ANIMALS: 78 dogs with seizure disorders that did not have any evidence of a thyroid disorder (55 treated with phenobarbital alone, 15 treated with phenobarbital and bromide, and 8 treated with bromide alone) and 150 clinically normal dogs that were not receiving any medication. PROCEDURE: Serum total T4, total T3, free T4, and TSH concentrations, as well as serum concentrations of anticonvulsant drugs, were measured in the 78 dogs with seizure disorders. Reference ranges for hormone concentrations were established on the basis of results from the 150 clinically normal dogs. RESULTS: Total and free T4 concentrations were significantly lower in dogs receiving phenobarbital (alone or with bromide), compared with concentrations in clinically normal dogs. Administration of bromide alone was not associated with low total or free T4 concentration. Total T3 and TSH concentrations did not differ among groups of dogs. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Results indicate that serum total and free T4 concentrations may be low (i.e., in the range typical for dogs with hypothyroidism) in dogs treated with phenobarbital. Serum total T3 and TSH concentrations were not changed significantly in association with phenobarbital administration. Bromide treatment was not associated with any significant change in these serum thyroid hormone concentrations.  相似文献

 Two isolated twigs (samples A and B) from the site of the fossil forest of Dunarobba (Central Italy) were examined to assess both the degree of degradation of the organic fraction and the composition of the inorganic component. Sample A, although showing the presence of minute crystals, is mineralised only to little larger extent with respect to the trunks of the fossil forest and exhibits a wood composition almost comparable to that of the fossil forest. Main minerals are silica, calcite, chloroapatite, chloromagnesite, and clays. Residual terpenes perfectly match, as either components or proportions, those found in the fossil forest trunks. Sample B is much more mineralised and physical parts are hard (sample BII, 84% mineralisation) along with others that are quite loose (sample BI, 62% mineralisation). Goethite constitutes the major mineral in both parts. Calcite, on the contrary, is higher in BII than in BI. In agreement with the literature, goethite is present in the interstitial spaces of the cell walls whereas calcite is found in the cell lumina. The wood components are limited to lignin and terpenes; being absent cellulose or other polysaccharides. BI contains the same types of terpenes present in the fossil trunks, whereas only diterpenes have been found in BII. The samples B contain, with respect to either sample A or fossil trunks, a lower content of fully or partly aromatic sesquiterpenes and diterpenes. This fact is probably due to the oxidative environment of iron deposition. The difference in the mineralogical structures exhibited by the two samples must be searched in the different environmental conditions under which the samples were maintained. In particular, an essential role must have been played by water sources much richer in soluble salts and more differentiated than the current spring waters of the region. The aim of the present study was to examine the role of oxytocin (OT) in the progesterone (P4) and prostaglandins (PGs) pathway to induce oocyte meiotic resumption. Cumulus–oocyte complexes were co‐cultured with follicular hemisections for 15 h to determine the effects of different doses of OT or atosiban (ATO; oxytocin receptor antagonist) on oocyte meiotic resumption. In another experiment, we examined the effect of the interaction between P4, OT and PGs on the regulatory cascade of the oocyte meiotic resumption. Oxytocin at 1 μm was effective in inducing meiotic resumption in oocytes co‐cultured with follicular cells (84.0%), not differing from the positive control group (74.4%). Atosiban inhibited in a dose‐dependent manner the positive effect of OT on the meiotic resumption (27.6% metaphase I with 10 μm of ATO, which did not differ from the 25.5% of the negative control group). Furthermore, a third experiment showed that P4 was able to induce oocyte meiotic resumption, which was inhibited by ATO. However, the OT positive effect was not blocked by mifepristone (P4 antagonist), but was inhibited by indomethacin (a non‐selective PTGS2 inhibitor). Collectively, these data suggest a sequential role of P4, OT and PGs in the induction of oocyte meiotic resumption.  相似文献
