In the Old World, some mosquitoes in the Culex pipiens complex are excellent enzootic vectors of West Nile virus, circulating the virus among birds, whereas others bite mainly humans and other mammals. Here we show that, in northern Europe, such forms differing in behavior and physiology have unique microsatellite fingerprints with no evidence of gene flow between them, as would be expected from distinct species. In the United States, however, hybrids between these forms are ubiquitous. Such hybrids between human-biters and bird-biters may be the bridge vectors contributing to the unprecedented severity and range of the West Nile virus epidemic in North America. 相似文献

Abstract Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) landraces display a high degree of variability in morphological and developmental traits, in disease resistance, and in protein content. Representatives of 29 barley landraces from southeast Turkey were collected from farmers’ fields, for a total of 800 accessions. The objectives of this study were to characterize these accessions over four years for morphological and agronomical traits to be used for future selection and breeding program. The observed variation between landraces was very large for all traits. In the first year of testing the accessions showed average grain yields ranging from 197–2225 kg ha?1. After three years of selection, promising accessions were tested at two different geographical regions and using two different irrigation methods. One line was identified which significantly out-yielded the local landrace in all of the testing years and had a higher average yield than the check genotypes. 相似文献

The effect of increasing levels of applied phosphorus (P) and boron (B) on the growth and the concentration and uptake of P and B were examined in eight maize genotypes (Furio, Riogrande, Sele, DK 743, Helix, Missouri, Betor, and Poker) with two individual greenhouse experiments. Phosphorus was applied at 0, 50, and 100 mg kg‐1 in Experiment I and B at 0, 10, and 30 mg kg‐1 levels in Experiment II. Application of B resulted in increased concentration and uptake of B and a decreased P concentration and uptake in all genotypes. The dry weight of all genotypes was decreased by application of B. However, applied P decreased B concentration and uptake and increased P concentration and uptake of the genotypes. The dry weight of all genotypes was increased by application of P. These experiments show that B is more toxic in the absence of rather than the presence of P, and that this toxicity could be alleviated with applications of P in the calcareous soils of semiarid areas. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Lucerne or alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) is grown as a forage crop on many livestock farms. In calcareous soils in eastern Turkey, lucerne production requires phosphorus (P) additions as the soils are naturally P deficient. Phosphorus sorption isotherms were used to estimate P fertilizer needs for lucerne grown for two years in a 3-cut system on a calcareous P deficient Aridisol in eastern Anatolia, Erzurum province, Turkey. Annual P applications ranged from 0–1200 kg P ha?1. The Langmuir two-surface adsorption equation was used to derive the maximum P sorption capacity of unamended soil and to determine soil solution P, maximum buffer capacity (MBC), equilibrium buffer capacity (EBC), and P saturation at the optimum economic P rate (OEPR) for dry matter (DM) production. Soils were tested for Olson P at the onset of the study and after two years of P applications. In both years, tissue was analyzed for P content at flowering prior to first cutting. The OEPR (2-year average) was 754 kg P ha?1 yr?1 corresponding with a soil solution P concentration of 0.30 mg L?1, a DM yield of 8725 kg DM ha?1, and $528 ha?1 annual profit. The P content of leaves at flowering increased linearly with P application beyond 100 kg P ha?1 and was 3.2 g kg?1 P at the OEPR. The unfertilized soil had an EBC, MBC, P saturation, and Xmax of 3304 mL g?1, 3401 mL g?1, 6%, and 1086 mL g?1, respectively, whereas two years of fertilization to the OEPR decreased EBC and MBC to 358 mL g?1 and 540 mL g?1, and increased P saturation and Olsen P to 56% and 32 mg kg?1, respectively. These results suggest a P saturation >50% or Olsen P >30 mg kg?1 are needed to maintain an optimum soil solution concentration of 0.30 mg L?1 in this calcareous Aridisol. Similar studies with different soils and initial soil test P levels are needed to conclude if these critical soil test values can be applied across the region. 相似文献

AbstractThis study was conducted in the farmer field between the years 2014 and 2015. In this study, 3 doses of potassium (K) (0, 10, and 20?kg da?1) of K2SO4 (50% K2O) fertilizer and 3 doses of humic acid (HA) (0, 20, and 40?kg da?1) (85% HA) were used. Increase in the HA dose reflected significant effects on pH, salt, organic matter, phosphorus, magnesium, iron, and manganese contents of the experiment area at p?.01 level. It was determined that increased potassium applications affected the salt, magnesium (Mg), iron (Fe), and copper (Cu) contents at p?.01 level. Increased HA application on plant growth criteria had a significant effect on biological yield, grain yield, and harvest index (p?.01). However, K did not reflect any effect on the growth stage of wheat. Increased number of HA applications on grain and straw nutrient content were found to have significant (p?.01) effects on P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, and Zn. Increased potassium applications had an effect on the P, K, Mg, Fe, and Zn contents with a significant level (p?.01). It was observed that HA applications were more effective than potassium applications on both general soil properties and yield and nutrient content. 相似文献

Pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) plants grown in pots were irrigated with the nutrient solutions containing 50, 75, and 100 mM NaCl or a control solution. Salinity markedly decreased plant growth. Increasing salinity levels increased stomatal resistance and sodium (Na), chloride (Cl), proline contents of the plants. The purpose of this study was to estimate the genetic parameters for birth weight of Karayaka lambs by separating direct genetic, maternal genetic, and maternal permanent environmental effects. Records of 1013 Karayaka lambs born between 2005 and 2010 were analyzed. Six different animal models were examined, all including direct additive genetic variance and various combinations of genetic and environmental maternal effects. The most appropriate model was chosen based on log-likelihood ratio tests. Since model 1 had the smallest likelihood value, it was chosen as the best model in this study. Depending on the model, direct heritability varied from 0.37 to 0.55 and maternal heritability ranged from 0.08 to 0.20 for birth weight. 相似文献

ABSTRACTThe coast along an urban area, when it is healthy, can play a role in the city, affecting the urban identity, enriching the visual aspects of life there, and overall affecting the quality of life in a positive way. Management and planning recommendations for the coast of Cide are presented. Cide is feeling the effects of rapid changes in land use. Studies conducted with geographic information systems (GISs) in order to analyze this process have shown that the natural structure of the user area of a coast changes over time. In particular, change manifests itself in an increase in construction, forests, and people living there. As for coastal planning, research priorities in the Cide coastal area, including some external environmental factors such as the social and economic factors affecting coastal development, were investigated. A method based on land use classification has been developed in the GIS environment. The data were supported by surveys conducted with residents. Based on the GIS results, Cide’s valuable agricultural land in coastal sand dune fields and forests have been determined; that the dominant type of land use in the study includes 3,336 ha of forest, accounting for 74% of the total area. 相似文献

The scale insects Acanthomytilus sacchari (Hall) and Duplachionaspis erianthi Borchsenius (Hemiptera, Diaspididae) are newly recorded as indigenous insects from Turkey. Both A. sacchari and D. erianthi were found to feed only on rhizomes of Johnsongrass. A field study was conducted to determine host ranges and feeding effects
of these scale insects on Johnsongrass, Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers. No feeding of these species was observed on Zea mays L. (maize), Sorghum sudanense Staph. (sorghum), Aegilops triuncialis L. (barbed goatgrass), Avena fatua L. (wild oat), A. sterilis (sterile oat), Bromus tectorum L. (downy brome), Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. (bermudagrass), Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steudel (common reed), Poa bulbosa L. (bulbous bluegrass), or Secale montanum Guss. (wild rye). The mean infestation rates of the scale insects on Johnsongrass in southeastern Anatolia were 11.47% and
