The pear (Pyrus spp.) is one of the most important fruits consumed in daily life. The aim of this study was to determine the total phenolic and ascorbic acid contents, as well as the antimicrobial, antioxidant, and antimutagenic activities, of various pear cultivars. The fruits of five pear (Pyrus communis L.) cultivars (‘Deveci’, ‘Kizil’, ‘Egirsah’, ‘Gugum’, and ‘Banda’) were used in this study. It was determined that the peel and pulp of the ‘Kizil’ pear had the highest total phenolic content (402.5?mg/100?g and 215.2?mg/100?g, respectively), while those of the ‘Banda’ pear had the lowest total phenolic content (326?mg/100?g and 126.1?mg/100?g, respectively). Additionally, the ‘Kizil’ pear showed the highest antioxidant capacity in the 2,2’-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS) and ferric-reducing ability assay (FRAP) (1.72 μmol TE/g FW and 161.25?μmol Fe II/g FW, respectively) and the highest ascorbic acid content (16.02?mg/100?g). The ‘Banda’ pear showed the highest antibacterial activity against the test bacteria. However, none of the pear extracts displayed antifungal activity. While all doses of the ‘Kizil’, ‘Gugum’, and ‘Banda’ pear extracts used in this study, except 80?μL/plate, exhibited antimutagenic activities, only the lowest dose (10?μL/plate) of the ‘Deveci’ pear extract showed the antimutagenic activity against induced mutagenesis in the Salmonella typhimurium TA 98 strain. potential. This study reports the influence of infectious diseases in commercial broiler farms in central Ethiopia. In this
study, clinical signs, gross lesions, laboratory tests (serology, bacterial culture, histopathology and parasitology) and
farm management data were used to identify major causes of outbreaks in an age specific manner in broiler chickens in three
poultry farms in Debre Zeit, Central Ethiopia. The outbreaks detected in the farms were due to mycoplasmosis, salmonellosis,
colibacillosis, coccidiosis and infectious bursal disease. It is observed that the occurrence of concurrent diseases in the
farms significantly affects the productivity and health status of broilers. The risk factors that predispose birds to the

Penultimate and last instar larvae of the common citrus swallowtail butterfly, Papilio demoleus L. (Papilionidae: Lepidoptera), were treated with different doses of a novel juvenoid, diofenolan. Several deformities were
observed as a result of topical administration of diofenolan which include delay in larval–larval and larval–pupal ecdysis,
ecdysial failure, mortality, severe reduction in pupation, deformed pupae and complete inhibition of adult emergence. The

It has been reported that the nucleotide sequences of the mitochondrial and nuclear genes of Takifugu pufferfish torafugu T. rubripes and karasu T. chinensis show 99–100% sequence identity, indicating a very close relationship between the two species. To further investigate this
genetic relationship, we compared genetic variation at four microsatellite loci and at the mitochondrial control region (CR)
(561 bp) between groups of T. rubripes caught at two locations [TrG, caught in the Genkai Sea off Tsushima Island in 2003 (n = 50); TrS, caught in the Suwo Sea off Kita-Kyushu in 2008 (n = 50)] and T. chinensis caught at one location (TcK, caught off the east coast of Korea in 2004; n = 50). Analyses using microsatellite loci showed that genetic diversity index values of the TrG, TrS and TcK groups were
0.9505, 0.9350 and 0.9335, respectively, while values of genetic distance and genetic differentiation between TrG and TcK
(0.0543 and 0.0189, respectively) were smaller than those between TrG and TrS (0.0857 and 0.0194, respectively). Analyses
using CR for the same specimens showed that genetic distances were consistent with those obtained using microsatellite loci.
These results, together with our previous observations, suggest that T. rubripes and T. chinensis are very closely related and possibly can be regarded as the same species. 相似文献

In Japan, Lactococcus garvieae infection has been the main fish disease in aquaculture. Although commercial oral and injectable vaccines have been used
to prevent L. garvieae infection in Japan, L. garvieae has been isolated not only from unvaccinated fish but also from vaccinated fish in which immunity induced by vaccination
had diminished. In order to obtain epidemiological information on this fish pathogen, we conducted biased sinusoidal field
gel electrophoresis (BSFGE) pattern analysis and phage typing of L. garvieae isolates (n = 427) from fish in Japan. These isolates were obtained from 13 different fish species between 1980 and 2007. In the BSFGE
analysis, L. garvieae isolates were classified into 17 groups (S1–S17) based on the SmaI digestion patterns and into four groups (A1–A4) based on the ApaI digestion patterns. Phage typing revealed five different phage susceptibility profiles (A–E) in L. garvieae isolates. Since 2005, comparisons of the results of phage typing and BSFGE have indicated the presence of a novel genotype

Mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal holm oak (Quercus ilex L.) seedlings inoculated with black truffle (Tuber melanosporum) were grown under nursery conditions and subjected to drought hardening for 4 months in autumn and winter followed by irrigation
for 10 days. Leaf water potential and stomatal conductance were monitored during the 4 months of drought. When the test was
completed (March), measurements were made for each treatment (inoculated or non-inoculated), and watering regime (watered
and water-stressed). Pressure–volume curves, osmotic potential at full turgor, osmotic potential at zero turgor and the tissue
modulus of elasticity near full turgor were calculated. Mycorrhizal colonization and growth, and the content of the main mineral
nutrients N, P, K, Ca and Mg were measured. Water stress affected plant growth, caused an elastic adjustment of the plant
tissues, and decreased the P and K content, and inoculation improved the nitrogen content. Drought acclimation apparently
achieved the goal of improving the drought tolerance of holm oak seedlings, without depressing ectomycorrhizal root colonization
by T. melanosporum.

Small-scale, artisanal livestock production is framed as “other” by conventional livestock producers, and rural communities.
This alterity, although not without cost, allows women to be involved as active entrepreneurs and managers in artisanal livestock
production and also allows farmers to pursue management strategies with the explicit purpose of enhancing animal welfare.
The case study presented here, an artisanal goat dairy farm managed by three women, demonstrates that by embracing feminine
care identities, these women carve a space for themselves within livestock production in which they can pursue their own economic
and affective goals. Analysis of ethnographic data also demonstrates that farmers’ decision-making regarding animal production
is based on both affective and instrumental concerns. If we are to understand and operationalize the affective component of farmer decision making based
on the livestock–farmer relationship, we must begin to consider to what extent livestock themselves are social actors. 相似文献

The hygroscopicity and thermodynamic properties of buried juvenile Pinus sylvestris L. wood with an age of 1,170 ± 40 BP were compared with the corresponding values of juvenile wood of the same species from recently cut trees. The 35 and 50°C isotherms were plotted following the saturated salts method and subsequently fitted in accordance with the GAB model. The isotherms were then compared by means of the hysteresis coefficients. X-ray diffractograms were used to analyse the crystal structure of the cellulose. The effect of time on the buried wood caused hemicelluloses degradation and a decrease in the crystallinity index and the crystallite length, resulting in an increase in the proportion of amorphous zones. Because of this, the equilibrium moisture contents of the buried wood are higher than of the recent wood, both in adsorption and desorption. Papaya ringspot virus (PRSV) HA 5-1, a nitrous acid-induced mild mutant of severe strain HA, widely applied for control of PRSV by cross-protection,
was used to study the genetic basis of attenuation. Using infectious clones, a series of recombinants was generated between
HA 5-1 and HA and their infectivity was analyzed on the systemic host papaya and the local lesion host Chenopodium quinoa. The recombinants that contained mutations in P1 and HC-Pro genes caused attenuated infection on papaya without conspicuous
symptoms, similar to HA 5-1. The recombination and sequence analyses strongly implicated two amino acid changes in the C-terminal
region of P1 and two in HC-Pro of HA 5-1 involved in the attenuated infection on papaya. The recombinants that infected C. quinoa plants without local lesions contained the same mutations in the C-terminal region of HC-Pro for attenuated infection on
papaya. We conclude that both P1 and HC-Pro bear important pathogenicity determinants for the infection on the systemic host
papaya and that the mutations in HC-Pro affecting pathogenicity on papaya are also responsible for the inability to induce
