The pre‐medicant chosen may influence the ease with which gastroduodenoscopy (GD) is performed. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relative ease of GD in cats under ketamine and isoflurane anesthesia after IM injection of hydromorphone (H, 0.1 mg kg?1), hydromorphone plus glycopyrrolate (HG, 0.1 mg kg?1 (H), 0.01 mg kg?1 (G)), medetomidine (M, 0.03 mg kg?1), or butorphanol (B, 0.4 mg kg?1). Eight cats were assigned randomly to receive each treatment in a cross‐over design with at least 7 days between treatments. Twenty minutes after pre‐medication, medetomidine produced greater (p = 0.001) sedation than the other treatments when assessed, using a subjective ordinal scale. The cats were injected with ketamine (10 mg kg?1 IM), orotracheally intubated, connected to a pediatric circle breathing system, and allowed to spontaneously breathe isoflurane in oxygen. Once end‐tidal isoflurane concentration was stable at 1.4% for 15 minutes, endoscopy was started. A single endoscopist (REG), who was unaware of the treatment used, performed all endoscopies. The endoscopist scored the difficulty of endoscopy subjectively (0–3). The significance of differences between treatments was evaluated using Friedman's test. Time for entering the stomach was 9.4 (4.7–15.9) (median (minimum–maximum)), 6.6 (5.2–11.7), 8.4 (6.3–16.5), and 7.7 (5.1–14.7) seconds and for entering the duodenum from the stomach was 20.5 (13.8–40.9), 18.2 (10.3–39.8), 20.2 (16.2–119.5), and 22.2 (11.8–83.8) seconds for H, HG, M, and B treatments, respectively. There were no significant differences in the time for, or difficulty of, endoscopy. We conclude that any of these drugs can be used satisfactorily at the doses and combinations tested to pre‐medicate cats prior to general anesthesia for GD. 相似文献

Of 57 horses with strangulating volvulus of the ascending colon, 42 were mares (including 21 postparturient mares), 8 were stallions, and 7 were geldings. Volvulus occurred most frequently in the summer (n = 24) and spring (n = 17). Pain was evaluated as severe in 41 horses, moderate in 9, and mild in 4. The abdominal fluid from 30 horses varied from clear yellow in 19 horses, to cloudy yellow in 3 horses, and serosanguineous in 8 horses. Protein content and nucleated cell count in the abdominal fluid were 2.5 +/- 1 g/dl and 1,000 +/- 900 microliters, respectively. Fifty horses had greater than or equal to 360 degrees volvulus and 7 had a 270 degrees volvulus, with 49 occurring in a counterclockwise direction. The site of volvulus in all horses was at the mesenteric attachment of the colon, except for a 360 degrees volvulus at the sternal and diaphragmatic flexures in 1 horse. Survival rates for horses with a greater than or equal to 360 degrees and a 270 degrees volvulus were 36% and 71%, respectively. The difference in survival rates reflected the severe vascular occlusion in the colon of horses with greater than or equal to 360 degrees volvulus. In nonsurvivors, hemorrhage in the submucosa and lamina propria (P less than 0.005) and edema in the submucosa (P less than 0.01) were greater than those in survivors. AIM: To assess the in vivo anthelmintic activity of condensed tannins (CT) in the forage species Dorycnium rectum and Medicago sativa, and in an extract from grape (Vitus vinifera) seeds (GSE), against two species of parasite, Teladorsagia (Ostertagia) circumcincta and Trichostrongylus colubriformis, at different stages of their life cycle, in sheep that were parasite-na?ve or previously exposed to nematodes. METHODS: In Trial 1, a factorial treatment structure was used to compare faecal nematode egg counts (FEC) and worm burdens in 40 weaned Romney lambs fed either the CT-containing forage D. rectum (12% dry matter; DM) or M. sativa (lucerne; 0.2% DM). Twenty na?ve and 20 previously-exposed lambs were drenched free of parasites then reinfected with known species and numbers of parasites, and housed in pens indoors on a diet of lucerne pellets and chaffed hay. Groups of lambs (n=5 lambs per group) were fed one of the forages over one of two time periods within the parasite's life cycle. Six to nine days after the last feeding of fresh forages, faecal samples were collected for FEC, and all lambs were slaughtered and worm counts conducted. In Trial 2, 12 Suffolk x Romney lambs were surgically implanted with an abomasal cannula and then housed indoors in metabolism crates. After infection with parasites, six lambs were infused continuously over a 14-day period with a commercially available CT GSE (96% DM, made up to 34 g/L in water); the remaining lambs were infused with water. During infusion, samples were collected for egg hatch and larval development assays. After infusion, samples were collected for FEC, and all lambs were slaughtered and worm counts conducted. RESULTS: In Trial 1, there was a significant (p<0.001) difference in burdens of O. circumcincta between na?ve lambs and those previously exposed to parasites, but no other differences were recorded. In Trial 2, lambs infused with GSE had significantly (p<0.05) fewer T. colubriformis at slaughter and significantly (p<0.001) fewer eggs hatched in the egg hatch assay (EHA) than for lambs infused with water. Overall, the differences attributable to GSE were small in magnitude, being an 11% drop in egg hatch, and an 18% drop in numbers of adult T. colubriformis after 14 days of continuous infusion. No other differences were recorded. CONCLUSION: The results indicate that the in vivo anthelmintic activity of these CT sources is, at best, modest and is unlikely to be of any practical value. Lateral luxation of the superficial digital flexor tendon from the calcaneal tuber occurs in horses as a result of tearing or rupture of the medial retinaculum of the tendon. The distribution, ecology and conservation status of the majority of plant species are poorly known. One of the challenges ahead is to address this knowledge gap and give more emphasis to this important group of species that represents a critical component of earth’s biodiversity. Full conservation assessments require expert knowledge of the group concerned, but for the majority of plant species, especially those from the tropics, the best source of knowledge is specimens housed within herbaria. Digitisation projects are underway to render information from this important global biodiversity resource more accessible; the next step is to assemble and utilise these data to make better informed conservation decisions. One crucial question is: how many herbarium specimens are needed to detect threatened species? Such information would inform and help to prioritise digitisation efforts. Using 11,461 herbarium records we assessed species geographic range to determine a preliminary conservation status of 661 endemic species of Leguminosae and Orchidaceae from Madagascar, following the IUCN criteria. By capturing 15 georeferenced specimens per species we produced range estimates for use in conservation assessments consistent with estimates based on all known specimens, for more than 95% of species. None of the threatened species were misclassified as not threatened, and less than 3% of species would receive conservation support as a result of being falsely identified as threatened. This approach can therefore help progress towards the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation target of a conservation assessment for each plant species, while reducing digitisation effort by up to half. 相似文献

The chemical characteristics of the purified procyanidin polymers of the flowers of the forage legume red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) were studied by (13)C NMR, acid-catalyzed degradation with benzyl mercaptan, and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). The (13)C NMR showed that the fraction consisted of predominantly procyanidin polymers. The thiolysis reaction products indicated a mean degree of polymerization (mDP) of 9.3 with epicatechin (81%) as the abundant flavan-3-ol extension unit and the terminating units dominated by catechin (95%). ESI-MS showed a range of oligomeric procyanidin ions (DP of 2-11). The white clover floral prodelphinidins consist of terminal units with nearly equal proportions of epigallocatechin (52%) and gallocatechin (48%) and extender units showing epigallocatechin (56%) and gallocatechin (39%). The dramatic difference in the stereochemistry of the terminal and extender units observed for the red clover floral procyanidins contrasts with the mixture of cis and trans stereochemistry observed for white clover floral prodelphinidins. 相似文献
