Abstract Soil CO2 efflux rate is influenced by soil temperature which varies with time within a day. In order to determine a measuring time-window which can represent the daily average soil CO2 efflux rate from a Black soil in north-east China, soil CO2 efflux rates from no-tillage (NT) and mouldboard plough tillage (MP) plots were measured at a 2-h interval over 48 h four times in the growing season of 2008. Results showed that during the course of measurements, NT soil had a higher soil CO2 efflux rate than MP soil. Daily average soil CO2 efflux rate was matched relatively well with the CO2 efflux rate occurring between 09:00 h and 13:00 h, and between 19:00 h and 23:00 h. Our results indicate that the soil CO2 efflux rate measured between 09:00 and 11:00 h represents the daily average soil CO2 efflux rate during sunny days. When the measurements were conducted outside this time window, a procedure to adjust the CO2 efflux rates measured between 07:00 and 21:00 h (outside of the optimum time-window) to estimate daily average soil CO2 efflux rate is described. 相似文献

Soil texture can be an important control on soil organic carbon (SOC) retention and dynamics. The (clay + silt)-sized SOC pool (SOC < 20 μm) in non-cultivated or grassland soils has been proposed to reach an equilibrium or maximum level named protective capacity. Proper knowledge of SOC in this size fraction in non-cultivated and cultivated Black soils is important to evaluate management-induced changes in SOC in NE China. Twenty-seven paired soil samples (non-cultivated vs. cultivated) were collected in the Black soil zone in Heilongjiang and Jilin provinces. Bulk soil was dispersed in water with an ultrasonic probe and then soil size fractions were collected using the pipette technique for SOC analyses. Soil organic carbon in bulk soil and size fractions was measured by dry combustion. Average content of SOC < 20 μm was 23.2 g C kg−1 at the 0–30 cm depth for the non-cultivated soils, accounting for 75.1% of the total SOC at the same depth. There was significant positive relationship between soil clay plus silt content and SOC < 20 μm in non-cultivated soils. Accordingly, a model of the maximum SOC < 20 μm in 0–30 cm depth of non-cultivated Black soils was developed: y = 0.36x where y is the maximum SOC < 20 μm pool (g C kg−1) and x is the percentage of clay + silt (<20 μm) content. The average content of SOC < 20 μm was 18.7 g C kg−1 at 0–30 cm depth for cultivated soils, accounting for 81.5% of total SOC. This average value of SOC was 4.4 g C kg−1 less than the maximum value (23.1 g C kg−1) and accounted for 55.0% of the difference of SOC between non-cultivated and cultivated Black soils. Cultivation resulted in 45.0% loss of sand-sized (>20 μm) SOC concentration relative to SOC < 20 μm. This result indicates that SOC < 20 μm and sand-sized SOC both play important roles in SOC dynamics resulting from management practices. This model can be applied to calculate the actual potential to restore SOC for cultivated Black soils under conservation tillage in NE China. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine outcome of open toggle rod stabilization in dogs with luxation of the hip joint. Design-Retrospective case series. ANIMALS: 62 dogs. PROCEDURES: Information on signalment, surgical procedure, and postoperative care was obtained from the medical records. A questionnaire was sent to all owners to solicit follow-up information. RESULTS: The distribution for time between luxation and surgery was bimodal, with 24 (39%) dogs examined < or = 2 days after injury and 23 (37%) examined > 7 days after injury. Postoperative complications developed in 16 of the 62 (26%) dogs, with complications developing within 1 week after surgery in 10 of the 16. The most common complication was reluxation, which occurred in 7 dogs. Dogs in which surgery time was < 2 hours were significantly less likely to have a reluxation (2/40 [5%]) than were dogs in which surgery time was > or = 2 hours (5/22 [23%]). When asked to rate current limb function (0 = no lameness and 5 = non-weightbearing lame) a minimum of 6 months after surgery, 23 of 27 (85%) owners indicated a score of 0 or 1. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results of the present study suggest that toggle rod stabilization is an effective treatment for hip joint luxation in dogs. Elemental S oxidation in soil is a microbially mediated process and is hypothesised to be influenced by changes to soil chemical properties such as acidity and ionic strength, which may arise from co-granulation with macronutrients or elemental S oxidation itself. Soil incubation was conducted with a sandy soil from South Australia to assess the effect of acidification and increased ionic strength on bacterial abundance and community composition and on elemental S oxidation during a 14-week incubation at 25 °C and 70% field capacity. Prior to incubation, the soil was treated with HNO3 to bring the pH to 6.7–4.4 or with KH2PO4 to increase the ionic strength by 0–0.7 M. Elemental S was applied at 200 mg kg?1 air-dried soil. Acidification or increased ionic strength had no or little effect on elemental S oxidation but decreased the abundances of 16S ribosomal deoxyribonucleic acid (rRNA) and soxB genes and changed the bacterial community composition. A second experiment with two other soils also showed that acidification did not, or only slightly, decreased elemental S oxidation, even though acidification strongly reduced 16S rRNA and soxB gene abundances in one of the soils. This study suggests that shifts in bacterial population brought about by temporary changes in pH and ionic strength, as may occur around fertiliser granules, have no or little effect on elemental S oxidation, indicating that the S-oxidising bacterial community in these agricultural soils contains functionally redundant taxa, which responded to changing conditions. 相似文献

An island wide survey for Citrus tristeza virus (CTV) in citrus orchards across Jamaica (13 regions) was conducted over 2 years. Trees (1, 885) showing virus-like symptoms
as well as asymptomatic trees were randomly sampled for testing by ELISA and 55 samples from the 6 major citrus growing regions
were graft inoculated on indicator plants. Most samples (74%) reacted to polyclonal antibodies against CTV in ELISA, while
20% were positive in tests using monoclonal antibodies specific to severe CTV strains. Samples collected from the 6 major
citrus growing regions produced vein clearing and stem pitting symptoms on Mexican lime indicator plants (87%). In addition,
stem pitting symptoms were induced on Duncan grapefruit, sweet orange, sour orange or sweet orange grafted on sour orange.
Nucleotide sequencing of the coat protein gene sequences isolated from these samples indicated high identities (88 to 95.5%)
among the Jamaican isolates and previously reported stem pitting strains from Central and North America and Eurasia (88 to
100%). The results suggest a shared ancestry with isolates from other geographical locations, rather than geographical speciation,

In recent years, innovations in fertilizer research have principally been in the design of products to supply more timely plant nutrients and mitigate detrimental losses to the environment. In the development of these fertilizers, a laboratory method to comparatively screen a large number of formulations for the rate of nutrient release is a critical first step in formulation optimization to significantly reduce time spent on pot and field trials, reducing costs considerably. Currently, given the absence of a standard laboratory method for all fertilizers, adaptions of a method for coated fertilizers from the International Organization for Standardization (2017) ISO 21263 and other column tests are being used which are often complex and/or require manual sampling which can be laborious, time consuming and costly. The method presented here evaluates the dynamic release in real time by continuously perfusing samples in columns utilizing an automated sample accumulation system for short‐term and long‐term release studies and eliminates the need for soil/sand packing of columns. Mass balance is accounted for by analysing the residue after dissolution and the amount released is expressed as a % of the total nutrient content in the product. This method is reliable, uncomplicated and cost‐effective and has been used to test uncoated soluble fertilizers, nanofertilizers, fertilizers with newly developed coating technologies and other slowly soluble fertilizers, to assess the effect of variables like coating chemistry and thickness, fertilizer composition or fertilizer particle size on release rate. 相似文献

Mudworm (Polydora websteri) parasitism is known to result in unsightly mud blisters in eastern oysters (Crassostrea virginica), resulting in reduced product quality and increased vulnerability to illness and environmental stress. While typically a concern only for bottom‐grown oysters, an abnormal severe outbreak of P. websteri in surface‐cultured oysters in New Brunswick, Canada, was reported in 2013, along with an anecdotally reported concurrent increase in siltation. Although heavier loads of silt are reported to increase P. websteri infestations in oysters, studies report mixed effects of siltation to this regard. Here, we report the results of a field experiment testing the effect of siltation on P. websteri recruitment in surface‐grown oysters at an aquaculture site in Richibucto, New Brunswick. Live oysters of similar size were deployed at the aquaculture site and were left to collect P. websteri recruits under one of two siltation treatments (high vs. low) for 50 days. Results suggested that P. websteri recruitment correlated with metrics of oyster size (shell weight, length, width, depth and surface area). When P. websteri counts were standardized for oyster shell morphometry, P. websteri recruitment was significantly higher in oysters exposed to the high siltation treatment, accumulating approximately 1.5× as many P. websteri as oysters exposed to the low siltation treatment. Our results suggest that higher amounts of siltation on surface‐cultured oysters can result in increased rates of P. websteri parasitism. Enhanced cleaning regimes may help to alleviate the impacts of P. websteri in surface‐grown oysters, although other mitigation strategies exist. 相似文献

An immature jaguar was surgically treated for severe constipation caused by a narrow pelvic canal. This narrowing was attributed to nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism. The ventral floor of the pelvis was widened by placing a piece of high density polyethylene between the 2 sides of the pubis after symphysiotomy and stabilizing the implant with orthopedic wires. This procedure provided stable fixation and permanent enlargement of the pelvic canal. The technique was easy to perform and could be used to treat pelvic collapse in other species. 相似文献
