A method has been described whereby models of septic tanks for teaching public health and oncometers for physiological demonstration and research may be constructed by employing a wire frame and covering it with plaster of Paris These models should prove especially useful to teachers in rural and suburban communities and to extension workers whose task it is to keep a vast number of our population informed as to the best measures of protecting their health These models may be rendered impervious to air and water by means of paraffin, varnish or brushing lacquer.  相似文献

Primary lens luxation (PLL) is a well-recognized, painful and potentially blinding inherited ocular condition in dogs. We screened PLL-affected dogs of 30 different breeds, to identify those which carried a previously described c.1473+1 G>A mutation in ADAMTS17 that is associated with PLL in Miniature Bull terriers, Lancashire Heelers, and Jack Russell terriers. This ADAMTS17 mutation was identified in PLL-affected dogs from 14 additional breeds. PLL-affected dogs from some breeds (most notably the Shar pei and the Brittany spaniel) did not carry the G1473+1A ADAMTS17 mutation, indicating they must suffer from a genetically distinct form of the condition. We also estimated the frequency of this ADAMTS17 mutation in some of the breeds. Our findings indicate the mutation segregates in a large number of different breeds of dog, many of which are terriers or breeds with terrier co-ancestry, but some of which have more diverse origins. Our results also indicate that the mutation is present at high frequency within most of the breeds in which it segregates. In the miniature bull terrier breed estimates of mutation frequency ranged from 0.27 to 0.39, corresponding to 7.3-15.2% PLL-affected dogs in this breed. We also identified an increased risk of PLL associated with heterozygosity at ADAMTS17, suggesting that carriers carry a low risk of developing PLL.  相似文献

The isotopic dilution method developed by Oehl et al. [2001b. Organic phosphorus mineralisation studies using isotopic dilution techniques. Soil Science Society of America Journal 65, 780-787] to measure gross mineralisation of soil organic phosphorus (P) was tested on a range of low-P sorbing soils. This isotopic dilution method relies on accurate prediction of radiolabel behaviour due to soil physicochemical processes. Based on experimental validation of the extrapolation for isotopic dilution due to physicochemical processes using autoclaved soils, a simple power function was used for extrapolation rather than the more complex equation used in the original method. For several soils, however, a potential overestimation of gross mineralisation by 0.1-2.0 mg P kg−1 d−1 was revealed. In addition, the detection limit of P mineralisation ranged between 0.6 and 2.6 mg P kg−1 d−1. The method is likely to be at the detection limit for soils that are high in available P and low in biological activity. The method was modified with respect to the extrapolation and successfully applied to a soil with relatively high microbial P (18 mg P kg−1) and soil respiration rates (29 mg C kg−1 d−1), revealing gross mineralisation rates of organic P of 0.9-1.2 mg P kg−1 d−1. Measurement of uptake of 32P by the microbial biomass allowed derivation of a net organic P mineralisation rate of 0.5-0.9 mg P kg−1 d−1.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper is to review our understanding of the involvement of central and peripheral factors in the control of feed intake in ruminants. The regulation of body weight under various states of energy need depends on an animal's ability to control feed intake to meet these needs. In the central nervous system (CNS), the ventromedial and lateral hypothalamus appear to be the areas involved in satiety and hunger, respectively; other important areas are the paraventricular nucleus and rostral brain areas. Intracerebroventricular injection of neurotransmitters, alpha- and beta-adrenergic agonists, 5-hydroxytryptamine and gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) agonists, has stimulated feeding in ruminants; intravenous administration of benzodiazepines stimulated feed intake in sheep and cattle, possibly by increasing GABA levels in the brain. Neuropeptides of the opioid and cholecystokinin families have reciprocal hunger-stimulating and satiety-eliciting effects when administered centrally in sheep. Further, concentrations of these neuropeptides in specific areas of the hypothalamus have been shown to change with the state of hunger-satiety of sheep. In the periphery, none of the hormones associated with the pituitary, adrenal gland, pancreas or gastrointestinal tract has been shown to have significant effects on the control of feed intake. In addition, the physical properties of the ingested feed in the gastrointestinal tract, while possibly influencing the rate or pattern of feeding, do not appear to be primary factors in the control of feed intake under many feeding conditions.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Bovine neutrophils, human recombinant tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF), and bovine recombinant granulocyte macrophage/colony stimulating factor (GM/CSF) were added to microaerophilic cultures of Babesia bovis and Babesia bigemina to determine if those substances could inhibit growth. Incorporation of [3H]hypoxanthine by the Babesia spp. was utilized as an indirect measure of parasite growth. When neutrophils were added to cultures of B. bovis and B. bigemina, the highest percentage inhibition of growth was attained. There was no significant enhancement of neutrophil killing when TNF or GM/CSF or both were added to either Babesia spp. Addition of TNF or GM/CSF or both substances (without neutrophils) resulted in an increase in growth of B. bovis and B. bigemina. For B. bovis, the group that contained neutrophils only and the group that contained neutrophils and TNF resulted in significantly higher growth inhibitions than the treatment group which contained neutrophils and GM/CSF or the group that contained neutrophils, TNF, and GM/CSF. No significant differences in inhibition were observed for the same treatment groups between B. bovis and B. bigemina.  相似文献

The serological results from this study clearly show that both equine influenza and equine rhinopneumonitis viruses were present during spring and autumn epidemics of respiratory disease on Western Canadian racetracks. Approximately 11% of the horses showed significant convalescent titres to influenza while 9% showed significant convalescent titres for equine viral pneumonitis. It was noted in our study a positive vaccination history corresponded with a reduction in the severity of the respiratory infection.  相似文献
