Water-rock reactions are driven by the influx of water, which are out of equilibrium with the mineral assemblage in the rock. Here a mass balance approach is adopted to quantify these reactions. Based on field experiments carried out in a granito-gneissic small experimental watershed (SEW), Mule Hole SEW (~ 4.5 km2), quartz, oligoclase, sericite, epidote and chlorite are identified as the basic primary minerals while kaolinite, goethite and smectite are identified as the secondary minerals. Observed groundwater chemistry is used to determine the weathering rates, in terms of ‘Mass Transfer Coefficients’ (MTCs), of both primary and secondary minerals.Weathering rates for primary and secondary minerals are quantified in two steps. In the first step, top red soil is analyzed considering precipitation chemistry as initial phase and water chemistry of seepage flow as final phase. In the second step, minerals present in the saprolite layer are analyzed considering groundwater chemistry as the output phase. Weathering rates thus obtained are converted into weathering fluxes (Qweathering) using the recharge quantity.Spatial variability in the mineralogy observed among the thirteen wells of Mule Hole SEW is observed to be reflected in the MTC results and thus in the weathering fluxes. Weathering rates of the minerals in this silicate system varied from few 10 μmol/L (in case of biotite) to 1000 s of micromoles per liter (calcite). Similarly, fluxes of biotite are observed to be least (7 ± 5 mol/ha/yr) while those of calcite are highest (1265 ± 791 mol/ha/yr). Further, the fluxes determined annually for all the minerals are observed to be within the bandwidth of the standard deviation of these fluxes. Variations in these annual fluxes are indicating the variations in the precipitation. Hence, the standard deviation indicated the temporal variations in the fluxes, which might be due to the variations in the annual rainfall. Thus, the methodology adopted defines an inverse way of determining weathering fluxes, which mainly contribute to the groundwater concentration.  相似文献

Summary Shrinkage observed on small clear specimens in radial and tangential directions and volumetric shrinkage obtained under the evaluation of physical and mechanical properties of wood have been analysed with reference to specific gravity and fibre-saturation point (FSP). It is observed that tangential shrinkage is 1.4 to 3 times that of radial shrinkage. The difference between FSP in radial and tangential direction is not so predominant; it is possibly governed by variation in specific gravity of the wood substance. The volumetric shrinkage is noted to be approximately equal to the sum of radial and tangential shrinkages. Shrinkage is found to depend on both the specific gravity of wood and FSP. Unlike Stamm's theory, their effect is found to be additive. The effect of specific gravity is found to be more than the effect of FSP.
Zusammenfassung Die Radial- und Tangentialschwindung kleiner fehlerfreier Proben sowie die Volumenschwindung, die während der Bestimmung der physikalischen und mechanischen Eigenschaften der betreffenden Hölzer beobachtet werden konnten, wurden hinsichtlich ihres Zusammenhanges mit Dichte und Fasersättigungspunkt untersucht. Die Beobachtungen zeigten gegenüber der Radialschwindung eine 1,4... 3,0-fach größere Tangentialschwindung. Der Unterschied bei Erreichen des Fasersättigungspunktes in radialer und tangentialer Richtung ist nicht so auffällig; möglicherweise wird er überwiegend von der Dichte der Holzsubstanz bestimmt. Es konnte weiterhin festgestellt werden, daß die Volumenschwindung etwa gleich der Summe aus Tangential- und Radialschwindung ist und sowohl von der Dichte der Holzart als auch vom Fasersättigungspunkt abhängt. Entgegen der Theorie von A. J. Stamm wurde deren Wechselwirkung als additiv erkannt, wobei der Anteil der Dichte etwas größer als derjenige des Fasersättigungspunktes sein dürfte.

Vietnam is one of the world’s top two rice exporting countries. However, rice cultivation is the primary source of agriculture’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Vietnam. In particular, strategies are required to reduce GHG emissions associated with the application of organic and inorganic fertilisers. The objective of this study was to assess the effects of various combinations of biochar (BIOC), compost (COMP) and slow-release urea (SRU) on methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions. In total, 1170 gas samples were collected from closed gas chambers in rice paddies at Thinh Long commune and Rang Dong farm in northern Vietnam between June and October 2014. The gas samples were analysed for CH4-C and N2O-N fluxes using gas chromatography. The application of BIOC alone resulted in the lowest CH4 emissions (4.8–59 mg C m?2 h?1) and lowest N2O emissions (0.15–0.26 µg N m?2 h?1). The combined application of nitrogen–phosphorus–potassium (NPK) + COMP emitted the highest CH4 (14–72 mg C m?2 h?1), while ½NPK + BIOC emitted the highest N2O (1.03 µg N m?2 h?1 in the TL commune), but it was the second lowest (0.495 µg N m?2 h?1) in the RD farm. Green urea and orange urea reduced N2O emissions significantly (p < 0.05) compared to white urea, but no significant differences were observed with respect to CH4 emissions. SRU fertilisers and BIOC alone measured the lowest greenhouse gas intensity, i.e. <2.5 and 3 kg CO2 eq. kg?1 rice grain, respectively. Based on these results, application of fertilisers in the form of BIOC and/or orange or green urea could be a viable option to reduce both CH4 and N2O emissions from rice paddy soils.  相似文献

The development of marine intensive land‐based aquaculture systems has been limited due to the absence of methods to manage saline wastewater. Aquaponic systems, although commonly applied to freshwater aquaculture, can potentially manage nutrient wastes while providing a secondary product. The aim of this study was to evaluate both the capacity for water treatment and the production requirements of two saltwater‐tolerant plant species (Sesuvium portulacastrum and Batis maritima) when grown hydroponically in a marine aquaponic system. The presence of plants was found to significantly contribute to nitrate removal, such that mean nitrate concentrations were 10.1 ± 5.4 and 12.1 ± 6.1 mg/L NO3?‐N in planted and unplanted treatments respectively. The use of coconut fibre as a planting medium also significantly contributed to nitrate removal, such that mean nitrate concentrations were 9.78 ± 5.4 and 12.4 ± 6.0 mg/L NO3?‐N in coconut fibre and expanded clay treatments respectively. Daily nitrogen removal was greatest in the coconut fibre/plants treatment, ranging from ?18% to 67%. Hydraulic loading rate, plant species and plant density did not significantly affect water quality or plant growth. The low flow/saltwort/low density treatment had the greatest mean daily nitrogen removal, ranging from 25% to 172%. The results indicate that the main nitrogen removal mechanisms were simultaneous nitrification–denitrification in the hydroponic plant beds and nitrogen removal through plant growth. This study demonstrates that marine aquaponics could be an effective way to manage nutrient removal in marine land‐based aquaculture systems.  相似文献

Pomegranate oil (PGO) is a unique and quite rare edible oil produced from Punica granatum L. seeds. It is considered to be a powerful health-benefiting agent, due to its antioxidative, anticancer, and antilipidemic properties. The aim of this study was to achieve a comprehensive and detailed profile of the different components of PGO. The fatty acid profile and phytosterol composition were determined by GC-MS; the triacylglycerol (TAG) compositions were profiled by the mass spectrometry tool of MALDI-TOF/MS. Results showed linolenic acid (18:3) to be the predominant fatty acid in the PGO (64-83%), as previously reported. The linolenic acid fraction was composed of four different chromatographically separated peaks that are assumed, according to MS data (based on both FAME and DMOX derivatization), to be attributed to different geometric isomers of conjugated linolenic acid (CLNA), punicic acid (18:3: 9-cis,11-trans,13-cis) being the major isomer. The MALDI-TOF/MS finger printing results showed the different TAG compositions present in the PGO, the major ones being LnLnLn and LnLnP. This unique PGO TAG fingerprint enables it to be differentiated from most other common edible oils. Phytosterols were found in quite a high concentration in the PGO (4089-6205 mg/kg), about 3-4-fold higher than in soybean oil. A detailed profile of the phytosterols in the PGO showed a wide variety, the major phytosterols being beta-sitosterol, campesterol, and stigmasterol. This study depicts a new detailed analysis of PGO, showing great potential for further research regarding the physiological effects of specific valuable components in pomegranate oil.  相似文献

Amazonian palms are prime candidates for sustainable management of non-timber forest products and yet useful species are often harvested destructively. This paper examines a promising management initiative for one of the most useful Amazonian palms – Mauritia flexuosa – in a rural community of northeastern Peru. Based on data from household surveys (n = 57), filmed in-depth interviews, focus groups and participant observation, we identify the factors that influence: (1) the adoption of a locally developed climbing device for wild-harvesting of aguaje palm fruit; (2) the continued practice by some households of palm felling for harvesting fruit; and, (3) investment by households in planting and cultivation of aguaje palm. Our findings identify key conditions for palm management and point to the particular importance of the adoption of palm-climbing devices, not only for reducing wild palm felling but also for stimulating broader community-level conservation as well as efforts to cultivate the palm.  相似文献
