? Context
In recent decades, there have been increasing reports of forest decline, especially in Mediterranean forest ecosystems. Decline in tree vitality is usually due to complex interactions between abiotic factors and biotic agents that attack weakened trees.? Aims and methods
Estimating dendrometrical characteristics [basal area increment (BAI), age at DBH from tree ring counting, social status, height, and diameter], tree health status, and a competition index, we investigated the individual vulnerability of a French declining silver fir forest to both mistletoe (Viscum album L. ssp. abietis) and bark beetles (Pityophthorus pityographus Ratz., Pityokteines vorontzovi Jac., and Pityokteines spinidens Reitt.).? Results
BAI was negatively correlated with both mistletoe infection (via mistletoe biomass) and bark beetle attack (number of insects per square meter), but there was evidence of divergence in tree choice between two groups of parasites. Mistletoe preferentially infected isolated and dominant trees that showed higher past growth rates than non-infected ones. Conversely, bark beetles mainly attacked defoliated and preferably declining trees with diameter (DBH) lower than 44.5 cm and slower past growth.? Conclusion
While successive severe drought periods are thought to greatly weaken southern silver fir populations, mistletoe and bark beetles may contribute actively to their decline processes as inciting and contributing factors, respectively. 相似文献62.

Two kinds of propagules play a role in Mycosphaerella graminicola dissemination: splash-dispersed pycnidiospores and airborne sexual ascospores. A method based on real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay and using Burkard spore traps was developed to quantify M. graminicola airborne inoculum. The method was tested for its reliability and applied in a spore trap network over a 2-year period in order to investigate the spatio-temporal distribution of airborne inoculum in Belgium. At four experimental sites, airborne inoculum was detected in both years. A seasonal distribution was observed, with the highest mean daily quantities (up to 351.0 cDNA) trapped in July and with clusters detected from September to April. The first year of trapping, a mean daily quantity of 15.7 cDNA of M. graminicola airborne inoculum was also detected in the air above a building in a city where the spatio-temporal distribution showed a similar pattern to that in the field. Mean daily quantities of up to 60.7 cDNA of airborne inoculum were measured during the cereal stem elongation and flowering stages, suggesting that it contributes to the infection of upper leaves later in the season. Most detection, however, tended to occur between flowering and harvest, suggesting significant production of pseudothecia during that period. Variations in mean daily quantities from 1.0 to 48.2 cDNA were observed between sites and between years in the patterns of airborne inoculum. After stem elongation, the quantities detected at a site were positively correlated with the disease pressure in the field. Quantities trapped at beginning of the growing season were also well correlated with the disease level the previous year. Multiple regressions revealed that some factors partly explain the daily variations of airborne inoculum. 相似文献

Enrichment of flavonoids in food is often limited by their off-tastes, which might be counteracted by the use of food proteins as carriers of flavonoids. Various milk proteins, egg proteins, and gelatin hydrolysates were compared for their binding characteristics to two flavan-3-ols. Among the proteins tested for their affinities toward epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), β-casein and gelatin hydrolysates, in particular fish gelatin, were found to be the most promising carriers with an affinity on the order of 10(4) M(-1). A flexible open structure of proteins, as present in random coil proteins, was found to be important. The saturation of binding observed at high flavonoid/protein ratios was used to estimate the maximal binding capacity of each protein. To reach a daily intake of EGCG that has been associated with positive health effects, only 519 mg of gelatin B and 787 mg of β-casein were required to complex EGCG on the basis of their maximal binding capacity. When the absence of turbidity is taken into account, β-casein prevails as carrier. Three selected proteins were further investigated for their binding potential of representative flavonoids differing in their C-ring structure. An increase in hydrophobicity of flavonoids was related to a higher affinity for proteins, and the presence of a gallic acid ester on the C-ring showed an overall higher affinity. 相似文献
