OBJECTIVE: To determine anesthetic techniques and the drugs used to provide anesthesia and analgesia to reptiles. DESIGN: Mail-out questionnaire. SAMPLE POPULATION: 367 members of the Association of Reptile and Amphibian Veterinarians. PROCEDURE: 1,091 members listed in the 2002 directory of the Association of Reptile and Amphibian Veterinarians were asked to complete a questionnaire regarding anesthesia and analgesia. RESULTS: 367 of 1,091 (33.6%) individuals completed the questionnaire; 88.8% used inhalants (particularly isoflurane) for anesthesia, and ketamine, propofol, and butorphanol were the most commonly used injectable agents. Intubation, fluids, and having a dedicated anesthetist were most commonly used for patient support, and pulse oximetry and Doppler ultrasonography were most commonly used for monitoring. Respiratory depression, difficulty monitoring anesthetic depth, prolonged recovery, and hypothermia were the most frequent complications. Nearly all respondents believed that reptiles feel pain, but analgesics were used infrequently for many reasons. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Providing anesthesia in reptiles is difficult, especially regarding anesthetic depth and vital parameters, and methods of support are used less frequently than in domestic species. Provision of analgesia is uncommon. Research regarding pain and its assessment, response to analgesics, and drug pharmacokinetics is needed. Dissemination of this information to practitioners needs to be improved for enhancement of the standard of care for reptiles.  相似文献

Between the summer of 1998 and the winter of 2000, Salmonella analysis was performed on 2128 single and 532 pooled manure drag swabs obtained from 133 California commercial egg laying farms. The isolation of Salmonella from all rows and from all flocks using single or pooled swabs was 80% and 92%, respectively. Hence, there was no statistical difference between single vs. pooled swabs in terms of identifying Salmonella on a row or flock basis. A total of 14 serogroups comprising 44 serotypes were isolated from 123 of 133 farms. When the top 10 serotypes were considered, there was no significant difference in the range of serotypes isolated by the two culturing methods. The overall S. enteritidis prevalence for California flocks was 10.5% (14/133). The overall row prevalence for S. enteritidis for all the farms was 1.1% (24/2128), and the overall pool prevalence was 2.4% (13/532). Sixty percent (12/20) of the S. enteritidis isolates from the positive farms were phage type 4, and 40% (8/20) represented five other phage types (1, 6B, 7, 8, and 28).  相似文献

This study investigated effects of birth weight and postnatal nutrition on organ growth in neonatal lambs. Suffolk x (Finnsheep x Dorset) low- (mean +/- SD 2.29 +/- 0.34 kg, n = 28) and high- (4.84 +/- 0.45 kg, n = 20) birth-weight male lambs were studied. Lambs within each birth weight category were allocated to be individually grown rapidly (ad libitum fed, ADG 337 g, n = 20) or slowly (ADG 150 g, n = 20) on a liquid diet to live weights up to approximately 20 kg. All organs weighed less at birth in small than in large newborns (P < 0.001), except the adrenals (P = 0.10). At birth, as a percentage of empty body weight (EBW), small newborns had larger testes (0.14 vs. 0.10%, P = 0.023) and smaller thymus (0.17 vs. 0.37%, P = 0.009), and tended to have a larger heart (0.85 vs. 0.75%, P = 0.060) and a smaller spleen (0.10 vs. 0.14%, P = 0.054) than large newborns. During the first 2 to 3 wk postpartum, small newborns had greater fractional growth rates of organs than large newborns, most notably spleen, thymus, and liver. Postnatal growth of organs was more closely associated with EBW than age, except for lungs, testes, and stomach. At completion of rearing to 20 kg of live weight, small newborns had a spleen approximately 30% heavier than large newborns (P < 0.001). Testes weights were 37% and 24% greater in small newborns reared slowly and rapidly, respectively, compared with their high-birth-weight counterparts (P = 0.034). It was also evident that postnatal nutrition altered the mass of individual organs at the conclusion of the rearing period without affecting the combined weight of dissected organs. Slowly reared lambs had a larger pancreas (+27%, P = 0.002), stomach complex (+83%, P < 0.001), large intestine (+39%, P < 0.001), entire gastrointestinal tract (+18%, P = 0.002), and testes (+54%, P = 0.016) and tended to have a larger heart (+6%, P = 0.068) than their rapidly reared counterparts at 20 kg of live weight. Rapidly reared lambs had a larger thymus (+61%, P = 0.003), liver (+34%, P < 0.001), kidneys (+33%, P < 0.001), and small intestine (+17%, P < 0.001) and tended to have a larger thyroid (+13%, P = 0.054) at 20 kg of live weight than slowly reared lambs. The functional significance of the smaller thymus at birth and increase in spleen and testes weights at 20 kg of live weight in low- compared with high-birth-weight lambs warrants further investigation. It also remains to be established whether these differences at 20 kg of live weight persist.  相似文献

Locoweeds cause significant livestock poisoning and economic loss in the western United States. The toxicity of Embellisia sp. fungi isolated from locoweed was compared with locoweed toxicity using the rat as a model. Rats were fed diets containing locoweed, fungus and alfalfa, or alfalfa. Locoweed- and fungus-fed rats consumed swainsonine-containing food at approximately 1.3 mg x kg(-1) x d(-1), gained less weight (P = 0.001) and ate less than controls. Swainsonine is the principal agent responsible for inducing locoism in animals. The concentrations of alkaline phosphatase and aspartate aminotransferase enzymes were greater (P < 0.05) in serum of locoweed- and fungus-fed rats compared with control rats. Similar intracellular vacuolation was observed in renal, pancreatic, and hepatic tissues of rats that consumed either locoweed or fungus. Rats that ate locoweed or Embellisia fungi displayed indistinguishable toxicity symptoms. The Embellisia fungi from locoweed can induce toxicity without the plants. Locoism management strategies need to involve management of the Embellisia fungi.  相似文献

An adult male binturong, Arctictis binturong, which had been anorexic and lethargic for seven days became acutely dyspnoeic and died under anaesthesia. A postmortem examination revealed left ventricular hypertrophy with a thrombus occluding the left ventricular chamber. Histological findings included moderate to severe multifocal, vasculocentric myocardial degeneration and necrosis with fibrosis replacing myocardiocytes. Escherichia coli and Proteus mirabilis were grown on cultures. The animal's serum vitamin E and selenium levels were considered adequate. The aetiology of the chronic myocardial changes could not be determined.  相似文献

Progress in producing improved vaccines against bacterial diseases of cattle is limited by an incomplete understanding of the pathogenesis of these agents. Our group has been involved in investigations of two members of the family Pasteurellaceae, Mannheimia haemolytica and Haemophilus somnus, which illustrate some of the complexities that must be confronted. Susceptibility to M. haemolytica is greatly increased during active viral respiratory infection, resulting in rapid onset of a severe and even lethal pleuropneumonia. Despite years of investigation, understanding of the mechanisms underlying this viral-bacterial synergism is incomplete. We have investigated the hypothesis that active viral infection increases the susceptibility of bovine leukocytes to the M. haemolytica leukotoxin by increasing the expression of or activating the beta2 integrin CD11a/CD18 (LFA-1) on the leukocyte surface. In vitro exposure to proinflammatory cytokines (i.e. interleukin-1beta, tumor necrosis factor-alpha and interferon-gamma) increases LFA-1 expression on bovine leukocytes, which in turn correlates with increased binding and responsiveness to the leukotoxin. Alveolar macrophages and peripheral blood leukocytes from cattle with active bovine herpesvirus-1 (BVH-1) infection are more susceptible to the lethal effects of the leukotoxin ex vivo than leukocytes from uninfected cattle. Likewise, in vitro incubation of bovine leukocytes with bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1) potentiates LFA-1 expression and makes the cells more responsive to leukotoxin. A striking characteristic of H. somnus infection is its propensity to cause vasculitis. We have shown that H. somnus and its lipo-oligosaccharide (LOS) trigger caspase activation and apoptosis in bovine endothelial cells in vitro. This effect is associated with the production of reactive oxygen and nitrogen intermediates, and is amplified in the presence of platelets. The adverse effects of H. somnus LOS are mediated in part by activation of endothelial cell purinergic receptors such as P2X7. Further dissection of the pathways that lead to endothelial cell damage in response to H. somnus might help in the development of new preventive or therapeutic regimens. A more thorough understanding of M. haemolytica and H. somnus virulence factors and their interactions with the host might identify new targets for prevention of bovine respiratory disease.  相似文献

Calorie restriction (CR) increases life span in yeast independently of Sir2. Lamming et al. (Reports, 16 September 2005, p. 1861) recently proposed that Sir2-independent life-span extension by CR is mediated by the Sir2 paralogs Hst1 and Hst2. Contradictory to this, we find that CR greatly increases life span in cells lacking Sir2, Hst1, and Hst2, which suggests that CR is not mediated by Sir2, Hst2, or Hst1.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the hypothesis that the concentration of the 1/20/5D4 epitope of keratan sulphate, cartilage oligomeric matrix protein and total sulphated glycosaminoglycans in synovial fluids from dogs with cranial cruciate ligament disease would be affected by tibial plateau levelling osteotomy. In addition, to evaluate the hypothesis that medial meniscal release or meniscal injury would alter the expression of these candidate biomarkers. METHODS: Forty-one dogs with naturally occurring cranial cruciate ligament disease were recruited prospectively. Synovial fluids were collected from the index joint before surgery and six weeks and six months postsurgery. Following tibial plateau levelling osteotomy, synovial fluids were assayed for 1/20/5D4 epitope of keratan sulphate and cartilage oligomeric matrix protein concentration using an inhibition ELISA and for sulphated glycosaminoglycans using a direct dye-binding assay. RESULTS: The sulphated glycosaminoglycans ratio did not change significantly during the study. Medial meniscal injury at entry was associated with lower concentrations of synovial fluid cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (P<0.05, unpaired t test). There was no association between medial meniscal release and the changes in marker concentrations, either from 0 to six weeks or 0 to six months. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Tibial plateau levelling osteotomy did not significantly alter the expression of the named candidate biomarkers. These findings reflect the limited nature of the arthrotomy or indicate that tibial plateau levelling osteotomy does not influence the progression of osteoarthritis (OA). From these studies, there is no evidence that tibial plateau levelling osteotomy affects cartilage metabolism.  相似文献

Haemophilus somnus lipooligosaccharide (LOS)-induced apoptosis of bovine pulmonary artery endothelial cells has been shown previously to be dependent on capsase-8 activation. Activation of caspase-8 can occur via a death receptor-dependent mechanism (e.g., TNF- binding to TNF- receptor 1 (TNF-R1)). In this study, we tested the hypothesis that TNF- can enhance LOS-induced apoptosis of bovine endothelial cells. Addition of exogenous recombinant human TNF- alone failed to cause apoptosis, or enhance LOS-induced apoptosis, of bovine endothelial cells. However, blocking de novo protein synthesis by addition of cycloheximide significantly enhanced apoptosis of bovine endothelial cells by TNF-, LOS or TNF- and LOS in combination. Conversely, addition of soluble recombinant human (sTNF-R1) diminished LOS-induced apoptosis. Overall, these data suggest that LOS-mediated apoptosis may be due, in part, to activation of a TNR-R1-dependent death pathway.  相似文献
