Intercropping of corn with legumes is an alternative to corn monocropping and has a number of advantages, for example, lower levels of inputs, lower costs of production and better silage quality than the monocrop system. An experiment was carried out at two sites in 1993 and 1994 to investigate the effects of seeding date (simultaneous with corn or 3 weeks later) and number of rows of large‐seeded legumes (one or two) seeded between the corn rows. The intercrop plots received 90 kg ha?1 less nitrogen fertilizer than the monocrop plots, which received 180 kg ha?1. Silage yields were sometimes decreased by the simultaneous seeding of corn and large‐seeded legumes. Protein content and concentration were not affected by most treatments and provided reasonable quality silage, despite a reduction in the amount of nitrogen fertilizer used.  相似文献

Brow suspension surgery was performed on 7 dogs with redundant facial skin folds, associated ptosis, and entropion. The surgical technique involved subcutaneous placement of polyester mesh strips to suspend the upper eyelid from the dorsal frontalis muscle and the underlying periosteum of the skull. Visual impairment associated with ptosis was resolved in all dogs at the 2 week reevaluation period. Upper eyelid position was maintained in 4 of 7 dogs available for long-term follow-up. One dog developed persistent draining tracts in the region of the implant, and removal of part of the implanted mesh was eventually required. Upper eyelid height in this dog, however, was maintained following mesh removal, probably because of fibrosis around the implant. Brow suspension is an option for surgical management of upper eyelid ptosis and entropion in dogs with redundant skin folds and avoids the need for facial skin fold excision.  相似文献

The principles of path analysis and causal modelling are discussed. Path analysis was applied to three data sets to assess the relationship between group characteristics (number per group and "mixing" subgroups of cattle, feeding-management of the group and processing factors (vaccination and prophylactic antimicrobials) and subsequent morbidity and mortality in feedlot cattle. The major findings agree with previously reported results but the timing and pathways of the effects are elaborated. In general, morbidity in week 1 was correlated with morbidity in week 2, which was correlated with morbidity in weeks 3-5. The same was generally true for mortality. In general, morbidity was not strongly correlated with mortality. Lots (unmixed groups) did not arrive in better condition, but experienced fewer subsequent health problems than mixed groups. (Silage-fed lots appeared to do poorly, however this was apparently due to the positive association between lots and vaccination, the latter being detrimental to mortality rates.) The more cattle per group, the greater the health problems in weeks 3-5 postarrival. Prophylactic antimicrobials in the water supply on arrival lead to increased health problems in the three to five week postarrival period. Antibiotic containing starter rations had a beneficial effect on health status in this period. This effect appeared to be partly due to delaying making silage the major ration component in silage-fed cattle receiving antimicrobial containing starter rations. Vaccination against respiratory disease in either of the first two weeks postarrival had detrimental direct and indirect effects on subsequent health status. Vaccination during weeks 3-5 postarrival was not significantly related to health status in that period.  相似文献

Spatial and temporal patterns of soil respiration rates and controlling factors were investigated in three wet arctic tundra systems. In situ summer season carbon dioxide fluxes were measured across a range of micro-topographic positions in tussock tundra, wet sedge tundra, and low-centre polygonal tundra, at two different latitudes on the Taimyr Peninsular, central Siberia. Measurements were carried out by means of a multi-channel gas exchange system operating in continuous-flow mode.Measured soil respiration rates ranged from 0.1 g CO2-C m?2 d?1 to 3.9 g CO2-C m?2 d?1 and rate differences between neighbouring sites in the micro-topography (microsites) were larger than those observed between different tundra systems. Statistical analysis identified position of the water table and soil temperature at shallow depths to be common controls of soil respiration rates across all microsites, with each of these two factors explaining high proportions of the observed variations.Modelling of the response of soil respiration to soil temperature and water table for individual microsites revealed systematic differences in the response to the controlling factors between wet and drier microsites. Wet microsites – with a water table position close to the soil surface during most of the summer – showed large soil respiration rate changes with fluctuations of the water table compared to drier microsites. Wet microsites also showed consistently higher temperature sensitivity and a steeper increase of temperature sensitivity with decreasing temperatures than drier sites. Overall, Q10 values ranged from 1.2 to 3.4. The concept of substrate availability for determining temperature sensitivity is applied to reconcile these systematic differences. The results highlight that soil respiration rates in wet tundra are foremost controlled by water table and only secondarily by soil temperature. Wet sites have a larger potential for changes in soil respiration rates under changing environmental conditions, compared to drier sites.It is concluded that understanding and forecasting gaseous carbon losses from arctic tundra soils and its implication for ecosystem-scale CO2 fluxes and soil organic matter dynamics require good knowledge about temporal and spatial patterns of soil water conditions. The water status of tundra soils can serve as a control on the temperature sensitivity of soil respiration.  相似文献

Fed the same diet, large and giant-breed dogs have higher faecal moisture and increased frequency of soft stools than small ones. This could be the result of physiological differences, such as a different gastrointestinal transit time. In this study, we have correlated mean total transit time (MTT) with body size and faecal consistency in dogs varying in body size. Fifty dogs from 13 different breeds were used, from a Dachshund to a Great Dane. The MTT was determined using coloured plastic beads [Cummings and Wiggins, Gut, Vol. 17 (1976), p. 219], and faecal consistency was scored daily during the study. We confirmed the strong correlation between height at the shoulder (body size) and faecal score (r = 0.76; p < 0.0001). The MTT increased with body size, from 22 h for a Miniature Poodle to 59 h for a Giant Schnauzer. We found significant positive correlations (p < 0.0001) between MTT and body size as well as faecal scores (r = 0.71 and 0.70 respectively). In the present study, we observed an effect of body size on MTT. In our 50 healthy dogs a longer MTT was related to a poorer faecal quality. Previous studies reported no relationship between body size and the upper gastrointestinal transit time in healthy dogs. So, we hypothesized that body size would mainly affect colonic transit time and that a longer colonic residence time would be related to a poorer faecal quality by promoting fermentation activity.  相似文献

Ant–aphid mutualisms, in which ants tend aphids, which in turn provide honeydew to the ants, are widespread and have been shown to affect plant growth. In boreal forests the effect of ant–aphid mutualism on tree growth can vary with stand age, because forest clear-cutting harms the ecologically most dominant ant partner in such mutualisms, wood ants (Formica rufa group). We studied whether the mutualism between wood ants and Cinara aphids affects the growth of boreal Norway spruces (Picea abies L. Karst.) in stands of different ages. In boreal forests, conifers, unlike deciduous trees, have only few defoliating insects, and therefore we expected the growth loss of conifers due to sap sucking by aphids not to be compensated by reduced insect herbivory due to predation by wood ants. The study was conducted in medium-fertile spruce-dominated stands in eastern Finland. We used stands of four different age classes (5, 30, 60 and 100 years) and selected ten spruces heavily visited and ten spruces lightly visited by ants around five medium-sized ant mounds in each stand age class. The access of ants was blocked on half of the trees in both groups. In the 5-year-old stands, the mean annual height growth of individual heavily visited seedlings was 16.3% greater than in the ones where ant traffic was blocked, but this difference was not significant. In the 30-year-old stands, the mean annual radial growth of the heavily visited spruces was 7.3% smaller than in trees where ant traffic was blocked, and this difference was significant. The mutualism had no significant effect on the radial growth in the 60- and 100-year-old stands. In the 60-year-old stands, however, the spruces that were visited heavily prior to the beginning of the study grew significantly less relative to their past growth than the initially lightly visited trees during the study. This suggests that the ant–aphid mutualism may have long-term effects on tree growth. The ant–aphid mutualism had no significant effect on the growth at the stand level. The results indicate that ant–aphid mutualism can have a significant effect on the growth of individual spruces, but the effect is negligible at ecosystem level.  相似文献

Because of its requirement for signaling by multiple cytokines, Janus kinase 3 (JAK3) is an excellent target for clinical immunosuppression. We report the development of a specific, orally active inhibitor of JAK3, CP-690,550, that significantly prolonged survival in a murine model of heart transplantation and in cynomolgus monkeys receiving kidney transplants. CP-690,550 treatment was not associated with hypertension, hyperlipidemia, or lymphoproliferative disease. On the basis of these preclinical results, we believe JAK3 blockade by CP-690,550 has potential for therapeutically desirable immunosuppression in human organ transplantation and in other clinical settings.  相似文献

Poxviruses compromise a group of long known important pathogens including some zoonotic members affecting lifestock animals and humans. While whole genome sequence analysis started to shed light into the molecular mechanisms underlying host cell infection, viral replication as well as virulence, our understanding of poxvirus maintenance in nature and their transmission to humans is still poor. During the last two decades, reports on emerging human monkeypox outbreaks in Africa and North America, the increasing number of cowpox virus infections in cats, exotic animals and humans and cases of vaccinia virus infections in humans in South America and India reminded us that – beside the eradicated smallpox virus – there are other poxviruses that can cause harm to men. We start to learn that the host range of some poxviruses is way broader than initially thought and that mainly rodents seem to function as virus reservoir. The following review is aiming to provide an up-to-date overview on the epidemiology of zoonotic poxviruses, emphasizing orthopoxviruses. By outlining the current knowledge of poxvirus transmission, we hope to raise the awareness about modes of acquisition of infections and their proper diagnosis.  相似文献
