The pathogenesis of experimental infections of Cryptosporidium muris (strain RN 66) in outbred nude mice.

Three groups of six-week-old nude outbred mice were orally infected with 400, 20,000 and 1,000,000 oocysts of Cryptosporidium muris (strain RN 66) per mouse, respectively. Oocysts were detected in the faeces from 10-18 days post-infection (p.i.) and continued to be shed in large numbers in all groups until the termination of the trial on day 89 p.i. Clinical signs were not observed in any of the infected mice and there was no significant effect on weight gain compared to uninfected controls. Histological examination revealed the presence of parasites confined to the glandular stomach. Parasitised gastric glands were dilated, hypertrophied and filled with numerous parasites. The glands had lost their normal cellular architecture and were lined with many undifferentiated cells. In some mice receiving the largest innoculum, the glandular mucosa was congested and the lamina propria infiltrated with eosinophils, polymorphs and lymphocytes.     

Fluorescence of Extracts from Argentine Hake (Merluccius hubbsi) Muscle and Its Correlation with Quality Indices During Chilled Storage

Argentine hake (Merluccius hubbsi) was stored chilled for 8 days. The evolution of fluorescence of the aqueous and organic extracts of muscle during storage at 4°C was studied and correlated with common damage indices; pH, total volatile basic nitrogen, free fatty acids, and the fluorescence intensity of the aqueous phase showed a good correlation with storage time. The excitation-emission matrices of the aqueous extracts were also obtained. A fluorescence landscape that could be attributed to tryptophan decreased with storage time, meanwhile a peak (around 340 and 400 nm for excitation and emission wavelengths, respectively) is developed during chilled storage.     

Self-compatibility and heterosis in white clover (Trifolium repens L.)

Inbred lines of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) have been produced utilising the rare self-fertility (Sf) allele. Twenty-two lines of four distinct groups have been maintained through five generations of selfing by single seed descent. Fourteen lines were used in crosses to produce F¹s. Both parents and hybrids were analysed for a range of morphological characters. Positive heterosis for dry matter production was observed in half the hybrids. No other trait showed significant heterosis. The degree of heterosis appears to be related to the extent of variation in morphological characters between the parental lines, some combinations of lines yielding heterotic hybrids in all cases, others in none. The majority of the F¹ hybrids are superior in terms of dry matter production to eight control varieties. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.
