The prevalence of equine piroplasmosis in Xinjiang province, China, was examined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs). A total of 70 serum samples were taken from horses pastured on three farms in western Xinjiang, and examined for diagnosis of equine Babesia equi (B. equi) infection and B. caballi infection by ELISAs using recombinant equi merozoite antigen 1 (EMA-1) and recombinant P48 antigen, respectively. Of the 70 samples, 28 (40.0%) and 17 (24.3%) samples were positive for B. equi infection and B. caballi infection, respectively. In addition, 11 (15.7%) samples were positive for both B. equi and B. caballi infections. These results indicate that equine piroplasmosis is widespread and therefore a cause for serious concern in western Xinjiang. To our knowledge, this is the first report describing a survey on equine piroplasmosis in Xinjiang province, China. 相似文献

Poultry diets are mainly used in pelleted form because pellets have many advantages compared to mash feed. On the other hand, pelleting causes reduction of feed particle size. The aim of this research was to investigate the possibility of increasing the content of coarse particles in pellets, and, at the same time, to produce pellets with satisfactory quality. In this research, the three grinding treatments of corn were applied using hammer mill with three sieve openings diameter: 3 mm (HM‐3), 6 mm (HM‐6) and 9 mm (HM‐9). These grinding treatments were combined in pelleting process with three gaps between rollers and the die of pellet press (roller‐die gap, RDG) (0.30, 1.15 and 2.00 mm) and three moisture contents of the pelleted material (14.5, 16.0 and 17.5%). The increased coarseness of grinding by the hammer mill resulted in the increased amount of coarse particles in pellets, especially when the smallest RDG was applied (0.30 mm), but pellet quality was greatly reduced. Increasing of RDG improved the quality of pellets produced from coarsely ground corn, but reduced the content of coarse particles in pellets and increased specific energy consumption of the pellet press. Increasing the moisture content of material to be pelleted (MC) significantly reduced energy consumption of the pellet press, but there was no significant influence of MC on particle size after pelleting and on the pellet quality. The optimal values of the pelleting process parameters were determined using desirability function method. The results of optimization process showed that to achieve the highest possible quantity of coarse particles in the pellets, and to produce pellets of satisfactory quality, with the lowest possible energy consumption of the pellet press, the coarsest grinding on hammer mill (HM‐9), the largest RDG (2 mm) and the highest MC (17.5%) should be applied. 相似文献

Chemical treatment of natural fibers is a well-defined means of mechanical property improvement in natural fiberreinforced composites. An understanding of mechanical and thermal properties in these media is essential for evaluating heat transfer, thermal degradation, and overall performance of these composites over their product lifetime. However, very little information is available illustrating the effect of such treatment on the thermal properties of kenaf composites. Also, no study to date has reported the thermal conductivity of individual kenaf fibers. This study reports the effects of fiber treatment (in 6 % NaOH) on thermal transport in unidirectionally oriented kenaf-epoxy composites and individual kenaf fibers. The effective thermal conductivities and thermal diffusivities of chemically treated fiber composites show a general increase over untreated fiber composites (0.210 to 0.232 W/m/K at 28 °C, 0.206 to 0.234 W/m/K at 200 °C). This improvement may be attributed to improved interfacial contact between the fibers and epoxy matrix shown in microstructural images after chemical treatment. The thermal conductivity of individual fibers was evaluated at room temperature using two techniques. Results from both techniques showed slight increases after chemical treatment (0.58±0.53 to 1.0±0.13 W/m/K and 1.2±0.54 to 1.6±0.28 W/m/K) but lacked statistical significance. Any improvement in surface crystallinity after chemical treatment does not appear to affect overall fiber thermal conductivity. A better understanding of thermal transport in kenaf fibers and composites enables better estimation of the performance of these composites in different applications. Moreover, the thermal conductivities of individual fibers are useful in understanding the fiber’s contribution to conduction in different fiber reinforcement configurations. 相似文献

The leaching of chromated copper arsenate (CCA) components from unfixed wood immersed in water is modeled in three dimensions
using an analytical model of simultaneous diffusion and reaction. Parameters for the model were determined by laboratory leaching
experiments with small uncoated wood samples, departing from previous approaches where diffusion coefficients are measured
in one dimension at a time. The diffusion coefficients and reaction rate constants of Cr6+, total Cr, Cu, and As in unfixed CCA-treated red pine (Pinus resinosa Ait.) and southern pine (Pinus sp.) were estimated, assuming first-order reaction rate equations and independent Fickian diffusion for all components. Estimated
reaction rate constants and diffusion coefficients were not significantly affected by sample dimensions except for very severe
longitudinal leaching from short samples. The predictive ability of the model using diffusion coefficients determined from
immersion of small lab samples was evaluated by leaching experiments in a spray booth of southern pine lumber at 21 and 60°C,
and red pine pole sections at 21°C. The predictive ability of the model was mixed, but in all cases represents a significant

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of supplementation of pig diets in the growth and termination phases with different calcium sources. In experiment I, 36 whole males were distributed in randomized blocks in six groups, with six replications. A basal diet was formulated to meet the animals’ nutritional requirements except for calcium (0.09%), and the sources evaluated (calcitic limestone, monodicalcium phosphate, calcinated bone flour, and oyster flour) replaced the basal diet to provide 0.59% of total calcium. To determine the endogenous calcium, a diet containing low calcium (0.019%) was given simultaneously to another group of animals. Feces and urine were collected for determination the coefficients of apparent and true digestibility. In experiment II, 160 piglets were distributed in randomized blocks in four treatments, with five replications and four animals per experimental unit. Carcass and performance parameters, calcium concentration in bone and serum, and bone parameters were evaluated. The data were submitted to analysis of variance and factorial. The calcium source did not influence the digestibility coefficients determined by total collection (P > 0.05). The digestibility of Ca from oyster flour estimated by collection with an indicator was higher than that from the other sources (P < 0.05). Calcium sources did not interfere in the evaluated parameters (P > 0.05). The sources studied in this work can be used to supplement growing pigs’ diets. 相似文献

Postharvest carrots are brushed, hydro-cooled to 4–6 °C and treated with chemical fungicide before storage to prevent soft rot caused by Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (Lib.) de Bary during storage. Replacement of the fungicide with high-temperature surface heat treatment poses a dilemma: excessive heating will cause damage whereas insufficient heating will result in incomplete disinfection. This problem is further compounded by the difficulty in providing uniform surface heating. To alleviate this problem, a system for the uniform application of high-temperature short-duration steam disinfection was developed using accurate real-time temperature monitoring of individual produce segments by thermal imaging. Uniform short-duration high-temperature heat was delivered from above by steam jets combined with electric steam-drying elements and reflectors. Produce was subjected to rotational and linear motions to expose each surface segment to the same amount of heat. The novel use of thermal imaging to monitor surface temperature in steam systems was essential for determining transferred heat and heating uniformity in a treated object. The resultant, uniform application of short-duration high-temperature steam provided surface heat-disinfection with minimal internal heating and damage. Application of the steam treatment immediately after carrot hydro-cooling reduced post-storage phytotoxic color change by 60–80% and resulted in significantly reduced sensitivity to post-storage soft rots caused by S. sclerotiorum. Carrot sprouting was not increased by the steam treatment, suggesting retention of the hydro-cooling's physiological effect. These results suggest that precise heat treatment can be optimally applied after hydro-cooling to improve postharvest quality of carrots in a procedure that is harmless to man and the environment. 相似文献

The round melon Praecitrullus fistulosus (Stocks) Pangalo has been cultivated in Asia since ancient times and has been considered an underexploited crop in the western
world. In the USA, there is an increased interest in using P. fistulosus as a commercial vegetable, and possibly as a rootstock for grafting watermelon, melon, or cucumber. However, the taxonomic
classification of P. fistulosus is incomplete and for many years it has been considered a close relative of watermelon [Citrullus lanatus subsp. vulgaris (Schrad. ex Eckl. et Zeyh.) Fursa] and was previously classified as Citrullus lanatus subsp. fistulosus (Stocks) Duthie et J.B. Fuller. Here, we used two sets of DNA markers to assess the genetic similarity of P. fistulosus in relation to Citrullus spp. {including Citrullus lanatus subsp. vulgaris, C. lanatus subsp. lanatus, Citroides group [also known as C. lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum. et Nakai subsp. lanatus var. citroides (Bailey) Mansf. ex Greb.], and C. colocynthis (L.) Schrad.}, Cucumis spp. (including C. melo, C. sativus, C. anguria, C. meeusei, C. zeyheri), Benincasa hispida (Thunb.) Cogn., Lagenaria
siceraria (Mol.) Standl. and Cucurbita spp. (including C. moschata Duchesne and the winter squash C. maxima Duchesne). The first marker set comprised 501 markers that were produced by 38 primer pairs derived from watermelon expressed
sequenced tags (ESTs) containing simple sequence repeat (SSR) motifs (designated as EST-SSR primers; produced 311 markers),
and by 18 primer pairs derived from ESTs that do not contain SSR motives (designated here as EST-PCR primers; produced 190
markers). The second marker set comprised 628 markers that were produced by 18 sequence related amplified polymorphism (SRAP)
primer pairs. The phylogenetic data indicated that among these cucurbit species, the wax gourd B. hispida is the closest to the P. fistulosus. Pollen observations, using light microscopy, indicated that each of the cucurbit genera examined here has unique pollen
morphology. The Cucurbita spp. have globular pollen grains with a stigmatic surface. The L.
siceraria has polygonal pollen grains with symmetrical boundaries, while the Citrullus spp. and Cucumis spp. have ovular (conical) and triangular shaped pollen grains (respectively). The B. hispida and P. fistulosus have spherical or semispherical pollen grains. These pollen features appear to be in agreement with the phylogenetic relationships
of these two species based on DNA markers. Analysis with 12 SRAP primer pairs revealed low genetic diversity among 18 United
States Plant Introductions (PIs) of P. fistulosus, indicating the need to expand the germplasm collection of this cucurbit crop. 相似文献

An abnormally high mortality among hippos (Hippopotamus amphibius) in the Luangwa River valley between June and November 1987 and estimated to number more than 4000 deaths was attributed to anthrax. Several other species, particularly Cape buffalo (Syncerus caffer) and elephant (Loxodonta africana), appear to have been affected. A smaller outbreak of anthrax in hippos occurred between August and September 1988, approximately 100 km up-river. A field study was arranged in August 1989 to assess the extent of environmental contamination by Bacillus anthracis and the risks to people in the area, to study possible methods of control and to equip local laboratory staff for continued monitoring of the disease. The study confirmed the enzootic status of the region. The characteristics of the outbreaks of anthrax in 1987 and 1988, and the results of the field study are described. 相似文献

Quasicrystals are aperiodic structures with rotational symmetries forbidden to conventional periodic crystals; examples of quasicrystals can be found in aluminum alloys, polymers, and even ancient Islamic art. Here, we present direct experimental observation of disorder-enhanced wave transport in quasicrystals, which contrasts directly with the characteristic suppression of transport by disorder. Our experiments are carried out in photonic quasicrystals, where we find that increasing disorder leads to enhanced expansion of the beam propagating through the medium. By further increasing the disorder, we observe that the beam progresses through a regime of diffusive-like transport until it finally transitions to Anderson localization and the suppression of transport. We study this fundamental phenomenon and elucidate its origins by relating it to the basic properties of quasicrystalline media in the presence of disorder. 相似文献
