Essential oils of peppermint Mentha piperita L. (Lamiaceae), which are used in flavors, fragrances, and pharmaceuticals, were investigated for their antimicrobial properties against 21 human and plant pathogenic microorganisms. The bioactivity of the oils menthol and menthone was compared using the combination of in vitro techniques such as microdilution, agar diffusion, and bioautography. It was shown that all of the peppermint oils screened strongly inhibited plant pathogenic microorganisms, whereas human pathogens were only moderately inhibited. Chemical compositions of the oils were analyzed by GC and GC/MS. Using the bioautography assay, menthol was found to be responsible for the antimicrobial activity of these oils. 相似文献

The surface pressure (pi)-area (A) isotherms and Brewster angle microscopy (BAM) images of monopalmitin and beta-casein mixed films spread on buffered water at pHs 5 and 7 and at 20 degrees C were determined as a function of the mass fraction of monopalmitin in the mixture (X). The structural characteristics and morphology of monopalmitin-beta-casein mixed films are dependent on surface pressure, pH, and monolayer composition. The prevalence of monopalmitin in the interface increases with the amount of monopalmitin in the mixture and at higher pi. At the monopalmitin monolayer collapse the mixed film is practically dominated by the presence of monopalmitin. However, some degree of interactions exist between monopalmitin and beta-casein in the mixed film, and these interactions are more pronounced as the monolayer is compressed at the highest surface pressures. 相似文献

Several red wines were elaborated to assess the effect of the degree of grape ripening on wine color and on the levels of flavanol and anthocyanin compounds, which are chiefly responsible for the wine color attributes. Two different cultivars and three different degrees of ripening were studied in two consecutive years. The wines were aged for 1 year in American oak barrels of medium-high char followed by 6 months in the bottle. The results showed that the wines made from more mature grapes had generally higher free anthocyanin content, and during aging the decrease of the free anthocyanins and flavanols took place in conjunction with an increase in the levels of the anthocyanin derivatives or "new pigments", which are responsible for maintaining color intensity and adding violet hues in aged wines. From the results obtained, it seems to be clear that the characteristics and composition of grapes harvested later (7-8 days in this region and for these varieties) than the usual time are quite beneficial to obtaining quality aged wines. The phenolic composition of wines made from the last harvested grapes is mainly responsible for the stability of their color, which is extremely important in product acceptance with a significant increase hence of product quality. 相似文献

The effect of micellar aggregates upon the stability of carbofuran in basic media has been studied. The effect of the presence of micelles upon the basic hydrolysis of carbofuran is a function of the nature of the surfactant monomer. Important catalysis of basic hydrolysis of carbofuran in the presence of colloid aggregates with positive surface charge has been reported. On the other hand, the presence of anionic and nonionic surfactants implies a large inhibition of the basic hydrolysis of carbofuran. Both catalysis and inhibition are due to the association of carbofuran with the micellar core. The kinetic constants for the basic hydrolysis of carbofuran in these microheterogeneous media have been obtained on the basis of a micellar pseudophase model. In the southwest part of the Iberian Peninsula the dominant land-use are the Portuguese montados and Spanish dehesas, parkland
forested areas of anthropogenic origin dominated by cork oak. They form a wooded matrix with open areas, scattered woodlands
and undisturbed patches of Mediterranean forest and scrublands. The montados are characterized by a rich bird community. We
have focus our study in a multidisciplinary approach, evaluating how management and landscape patterns influence the bird
community in order to identify potential threats to its conservation. The study was conducted in the Site of Community Importance
of Serra de Monfurado were 70% of the area is cork and holm oaks. We used data from 120 10-min point counts. Using variation
partitioning, we determined the independent and joint effects of Forest, Management and Habitat variables. The variation captured
in bird assemblage was 65.06%. Most of the explained variation was related to the Habitat and Management variables. The explanatory
variables that were high-lighted as important predictors were variables that reflected tree and shrub density and cork removal.
Modelling for forest species through generalized linear models (GLM) emphasize that the management plays an important role
in the species distribution. The most important variables selected in models reflected cattle grazing and cork removal. Our
results point out that the type of management is crucial to maintain the equilibrium in bird community associated to montados.
Farmland and forest species will benefit from areas with different tree densities, small patches of Mediterranean scrubs in

We investigated if Pinus ponderosa plantations in Patagonia are able to produce viable mycorrhizal inocula towards adjacent grasslands, which only harbor endomycorrhizal
vegetation. We hypothesized that these inocula have the potential to contribute to the establishment of naturally disseminated
seedlings. Also, we determined the main fungal taxa involved in this process. Seven plantations in the onset of their reproductive
phase and located in the Patagonian native forest/steppe ecotone (Argentina) were selected. Soil samplings were obtained at
nine points along a 450 m long, W-E transect established in each plantation. Soil bioassays were performed in a greenhouse,
with P. ponderosa seedlings acting as hosts for mycorrhizal inocula present in soil samples, during 12 months. Mycorrhization percentage, morphotype
richness and morphotype composition was determined through morphological evaluation. Viable ecto- and ectendomycorrhizal inocula
were found disseminated outside plantations. The amount of mycorrhizal inoculum followed a decreasing function with distance
to plantation edges. Mycorrhizal fungal genus Rhizopogon and “E-strain” mycorrhizal types appeared as pioneering taxa regarding seedlings colonization, being the most persistent
and frequent symbionts found. Plantations, thus, facilitate the surrounding terrain for newcoming seedlings through the dispersion

Pittosporum undulatum Ventenat (Pittosporaceae) is a tree or shrub native to Australia introduced in the Azores Islands in the 19th century, presently naturalized in the nine islands. According to a random survey of vascular plants in the Azores, the invader is present throughout the archipelago, in 62% of 547 1-km2 samples. It was found in pure or mixed stands, forming groups and also as isolated trees. P. undulatum was frequently found in native scrubland (62%), mixed woodland (39%) and hedgerows (25%). The altitudinal range extended from sea level up to about 800 m a.s.l., with the highest frequency between 100 and 400 m. The woody species more strongly associated with P. undulatum included characteristic native and endemic species as well as non-indigenous and invasive taxa. Based on a forest inventory, 49% of the forested area in the Azores, about 24,000 ha, is occupied by P. undulatum. Considerable areas inside Island Natural Parks are covered by this species. The estimated annual P. undulatum biomass production in the Azores might range from only about 150 Mg in the small island of Corvo up to more than 60,000 Mg in Pico Island. The heating value of its wood and its chemical composition make it a good candidate for use in combustion or gasification processes. Since there are no resources available to control this large-scale invasion, using P. undulatum biomass for energy production might be an important factor to stimulate the progressive and sustainable cutting of its stands and its replacement by Macaronesian species. 相似文献

Lupinus angustifolius L. is a Mediterranean species, domesticated in the 20th century, representing an important grain legume crop in Australia
and other countries. This work is focused on the collection of wild germplasm and on the characterisation of morphological
and molecular diversity of germplasm accessions. It reports the collection of 81 wild L. angustifolius accessions from the South and Centre of Portugal, available at the ‘Instituto Superior de Agronomia Gene Bank’, with subsequent
morphological and molecular characterisation of a selection of these and other accessions. A multivariate analysis of morphological
traits on 88 L. angustifolius accessions (including 59 wild Portuguese accessions, 15 cultivars and 14 breeding lines) showed a cline of variation on wild
germplasm, with plants from Southern Portugal characterised by earlier flowering, higher vegetative development and larger
seeds. AFLP and ISSR molecular markers grouped modern cultivars as sub-clusters within the wider diversity of wild germplasm,
revealing the narrow pool of genetic diversity on which domesticated accessions are based. The importance of preserving, characterising
and using wild genetic resources for L. angustifolius crop improvement is outlined by the results obtained. 相似文献

Lindane ( γ‐hexachlorocyclohexane or γ‐HCH) is an organochlorine insecticide previously used extensively for the control of agricultural pests. We studied the effects of soil HCH contamination on vegetation and its associated arbuscular mycorrhizas (AM). The polluted and unpolluted plots had similar plant cover, with the same species richness and abundance. Plantago lanceolata plants were selected for mycorrhizal analysis because of their presence in both plots and known mycotrophy. The presence of HCH appeared to have no significant effect on the extent of colonization of Plantago roots by AM, suggesting a similar functionality of the fungal symbionts. However, infective AM propagules, the density of AM spores and viable AM hyphae in the rhizosphere were much less in the HCH‐polluted soil than in the unpolluted plot. Pre‐inoculation of four plant species with an isolate of Glomus deserticola obtained from the HCH‐contaminated soil resulted in increased growth and fungal colonization of roots compared with plants pre‐inoculated with the introduced fungus G. macrocarpum or colonized by the consortium of indigenous AM fungal species, when those plants were transplanted to an HCH‐contaminated soil. This suggests that the fungus increases the tolerance of plants to the toxic soil environment. We conclude that herbaceous and woody plants can grow in soil with little P contaminated with <100 mg HCH kg?1 with the help of tolerant AM, despite the detrimental effect of HCH on AM fungal propagules in soil. The effects of AM fungi on plant growth and soil microbial community structure in HCH‐polluted sites could be important for remediation of the pollutant through the microbial activity in the rhizosphere. 相似文献
