This experiment evaluated the effect of high dietary Se levels using organic or inorganic Se on the selenosis responses in growing-finishing swine. A 2 x 4 factorial arrangement of treatments in a randomized complete block design was conducted in two replicates. Sodium selenite or Se-enriched yeast was added at 5, 10, 15, or 20 ppm Se to corn-soybean meal diets. A basal diet without added Se was a ninth treatment group. Ninety crossbred barrows initially averaging 24.7 kg BW were allotted at five pigs per pen. Pigs were bled at 3-wk intervals and plasma Se, glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity, glutamic oxalacetic transaminase (PGOT), hemoglobin, packed cell volume, and blood cell Se concentration were measured. After 12 wk, pigs were killed and various tissues and bile were collected for Se analyses. Pig body weights, daily gains, and feed intakes were similar for both Se sources when provided at < or = 5 ppm Se, but each measurement declined in a different manner for each Se source as the dietary Se level increased. The decline was more rapid when the inorganic rather than organic Se source was fed, resulting in interaction responses (P < 0.01). Hair loss (alopecia) and separation of the hoof at the coronary band site occurred at > or = 10 ppm inorganic Se but at > or = 15 ppm organic Se level. Plasma GSH-Px activity increased (P < 0.01) when high dietary Se levels of either Se source was fed. Plasma and blood cell Se increased at each period as dietary Se level increased (P < 0.01) and was greater when organic Se was provided (P < 0.05). Blood cell Se concentration reached a plateau when inorganic Se, but not when organic Se, was fed and increased as the experiment progressed. This resulted in a three-way interaction (P < 0.01). Plasma GOT activity at the 12-wk period was elevated when inorganic Se was provided at > or = 15 ppm Se but not when organic Se was fed, resulting in an interaction (P < 0.05). Tissue Se concentrations increased as dietary Se level increased and when organic Se was provided, resulting in interaction responses (P < 0.05). Bile was a yellow color when the basal diet was fed but was dark brown at > 10 ppm inorganic Se and at 20 ppm when organic Se was provided. Bile Se increased as dietary Se level increased (P < 0.01). These results suggest that dietary Se from inorganic or organic sources was toxic at > or = 5 ppm Se, but subsequent selenosis effects were more severe and occurred sooner when sodium selenite was the Se source.  相似文献

Inactivated vaccines for heartwater prepared with the commercially acceptable Montanide ISA 50 (ISA 50) adjuvant were field tested in Boer goats in Botswana, Angora goats in South Africa, and Merino sheep in Zambia and Zimbabwe. Two vaccines, one made using the Zimbabwean Mbizi isolate and the other using the respective local field isolate (Sunnyside in Botswana; Bathurst in South Africa; Lutale in Zambia), were tested at each site, except in Zimbabwe where only the Mbizi vaccine was tested. Compared with unvaccinated animals, the Mbizi vaccine significantly protected goats and sheep against field Amblyomma tick challenge in Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe (P = 0.018, 0.002 and 0.017, respectively), but failed to protect Angora goats in South Africa. However, in South Africa the vaccine prepared using the local field isolate Bathurst, induced significant protection (P=0.008). The vaccines containing the local isolates at all other sites were less protective than the Mbizi vaccine. The Mbizi inactivated vaccine also significantly protected 17 of 21 cattle (P = 0.05) against heartwater challenge from field ticks in Zimbabwe. Against the same challenge only 7 of 21 unvaccinated control cattle survived.This study demonstrates that heartwater is a major constraint to upgrading livestock in endemic areas, and caused an overall mortality of 77.6% in naive sheep and goats (97 of 125 died) and 67% in cattle (14 of 21 died). In contrast, the vaccine had a protective effect by reducing the overall mortality in sheep and goats to 54.3% (113 of 208 died) and to 19% in cattle (4 of 21 died).  相似文献

Growing conditions and processing technologies to which soybeans (SB) are exposed have an effect on digestibilities of AA found in the resultant soybean meals (SBM). This study evaluated SBM from five major SB-producing countries (Argentina, Brazil, China, India, and the United States). An industry representative in each country collected samples of unprocessed SB and SBM subjectively determined to be of high, intermediate, or low quality. The SB from each country were processed into SBM under uniform conditions in the United States. Five experiments (each examining the three SBM and the SB processed in the United States from a single country) were conducted to determine true ileal AAd digestibilities. In addition, a standard SBM purchased on the open market in the United States was used in all experiments as a control. Data from pigs fed a low-protein casein diet in each study were used to calculate true AA digestibilities. Pigs were fitted with simple T-cannulas at the terminal ileum and allotted to treatments in Latin square design experiments. Duplicate experiments were conducted at the University of Illinois and at The Ohio State University. Within each country comparison, pigs fed the SBM processed in the U.S. from SB grown in the five countries had lower (P < 0.05) true total amino acid (TAA) digestibilities than did pigs fed any of the SBM prepared within the country of origin, except the United States. This indicates that processing conditions used at the U.S. pilot plant were not ideal when using SB from other countries. True TAA digestibilities of the diets containing the high-, intermediate-, and low-quality SBM did not differ, except for China, where the low-quality SBM (83.5%) had a lower (P < 0.05) digestibility than the intermediate- (89.6%) or high- (89.0%) quality meals. Soybean meal produced in Argentina (average, 87%) and Brazil (average, 82%) had lower (P < 0.05) true TAA digestibilities than did the standard SBM (91%), indicating that the processing plants in those countries may produce a less digestible SBM than that available on the open market in the United States.  相似文献

A survey was carried out to define the distribution of heartwater in goats that originated from six districts in communal grazing semi-arid areas of Zambia. A total of 181 samples (40.1%) out of 451 serum samples from adult goats were positive for Ehrlichia ruminantium antibodies after screening using indirect MAP-1B antigen ELISA technique with statistically significant differences (P < 0.01) between the six districts. Out of 1 036 adult goats examined for tick infestation, 105 were infested by ticks, with Amblyomma species being the most dominant tick encountered. Amblyomma variegatum, which is the vector for heartwater transmission in Zambia constituted 42.4% of the tick species, identified. The overall tick infestation rate was 10% while the tick:goat ratio was 2.1:1. Amblyomma variegatum appears to be widespread throughout the study area, as are antibodies to E. ruminantium.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted to determine the effect of high dietary intakes of Zn and Cu and their combination on growth performance of weanling pigs with diverse health status and management strategies. Twelve experiment stations cooperated and used a total of 1,356 pigs that averaged 6.55 kg BW and 22.2 d age at weaning. The four dietary treatments, all of which met or exceeded NRC requirements, were 1) control, 2) 3,000 ppm Zn (from Zn oxide), 3) 250 Cu ppm (from Cu sulfate), or 4) 3,000 ppm Zn and 250 ppm Cu. The diets were fed as a complex Phase I diet (1.4% lysine) for 7 d followed by a Phase II diet (1.2% lysine) for 21 d. Chlortetracycline (220 ppm) was added to all diets. Fecal color (1 = yellow to 5 = black) and consistency (1 = very firm to 5 = very watery) were scored daily for 3 wk. At the end of the 28-d study, 412 pigs were bled at five stations, and plasma Cu, Zn, and Fe concentrations were determined at one station with atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Average daily gain (375, 422, 409, 415 g/d), feed intake (637, 690, 671, 681 g/d), and gain/feed (586, 611, 611, 612 g/kg) were improved (P < .01) by the addition of Zn and(or) Cu. Significant Cu x Zn interactions imply that the responses to Zn and Cu were independent and not additive. There were significant (P < .01) Zn and Cu effects and a Zn x Cu interaction on fecal color (3.17, 3.24, 4.32, 3.57) and consistency (2.39, 2.14, 2.14, 2.13). Dietary additions of Cu and Zn resulted in elevated plasma concentrations of Cu and Zn, respectively. These data indicate that pharmacological additions of 3,000 ppm Zn (oxide) or 250 ppm Cu (sulfate) stimulate growth beyond that derived from intakes of Zn and Cu that meet nutrient requirements. However, the combination of Zn and Cu did not result in an additive growth response.  相似文献

A regional experiment was conducted to test the hypothesis that the concentration of dietary Ca does not affect the digestibility of Ca or P in diets fed to growing pigs. Six diets based on corn, potato protein isolate, cornstarch, and soybean oil were formulated. All diets also contained monosodium phosphate, crystalline AA, salt, and a vitamin-micromineral premix. The only difference among the diets was that varying concentrations of calcium carbonate were used to create diets containing 0.33, 0.46, 0.51, 0.67, 0.92, and 1.04% Ca. All diets contained between 0.40 and 0.43% P. Six universities participated in the experiment and each university contributed 2 replicates to the experiment for a total of 12 replicates (initial BW: 23.1 ± 4.4 kg). Pigs were placed in metabolism cages that allowed total, but separate, collection of feces and urine from the pigs. Pigs within each replicate were randomly allotted to the 6 diets and fed experimental diets for 14 d with urine and feces being collected over a 5-d period. Diets, feces, and urine samples were analyzed for Ca and P, and the daily balance, the apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD), and the retention of Ca and P were calculated. Results indicated that intake, fecal excretion, and urinary excretion of Ca increased (linear, P<0.05) as dietary Ca concentration increased. The daily intake of P was not affected by the dietary concentration of Ca, but fecal excretion of P increased (linear, P<0.05) as dietary Ca concentrations increased. In contrast, urinary P output was decreased (linear, P<0.05) as dietary Ca increased. The retention of Ca increased (linear, P<0.05) from 1.73 to 4.60 g/d, whereas the retention of P decreased (linear, P<0.05) from 1.98 to 1.77 g/d as dietary Ca concentrations increased. However, if calculated as a percentage of intake, both Ca and P retention were decreased (linear, P<0.05) as dietary Ca concentration increased (from 55.4 to 46.1% and from 48.4 to 43.5%, respectively). The ATTD of Ca was not affected by the dietary concentration of Ca, but the ATTD of P was decreased (linear, P<0.05) from 56.9 to 46.2% as dietary Ca concentration increased. It is concluded that the dietary concentration of Ca does not affect the ATTD of Ca in calcium carbonate, but increased concentrations of dietary Ca may decrease the ATTD of P in diets based on corn, potato protein isolate, and monosodium phosphate.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate supplementation of diets with 8% corn oil, lard or tallow. In Exp. 1, 36 barrows weaned at 21 d of age were used to evaluate the effects of these three diets on digestibilities of fat and dry matter and subsequent N retentions from wk 1 to 4 postweaning. In Exp. 2, 147 weanling pigs in six replicates were used to evaluate weekly growth and feed performance measurements when fed these same diets for a 4-wk postweaning period. A large quantity of fat was absorbed (P less than .01) during wk 1 postweaning by pigs fed the corn oil diet, with the quantity absorbed similar for the three sources of fat from wk 2 to 4. Diets with corn oil had a higher apparent fat digestibility than diets supplemented with lard or tallow during each week postweaning (P less than .05). Apparent digestibility of fat increased (P less than .01) for each fat source each week postweaning but appeared to reach a plateau by wk 3 postweaning. Differences in apparent digestibility of fat between fat sources narrowed from wk 1 to wk 4, with digestibility of corn oil increasing from 79 to 89% and of animal fat sources increasing from 67 to 84%. Apparent digestibility of dry matter tended (P less than .10) to be highest when corn oil was provided during the initial 2-wk postweaning period. Sixty crossbred (Yorkshire-Hampshire X Duroc) gilts were fed one of four corn-soybean meal diets fortified with .3 ppm Se and 0, 16, 33, or 66 IU of DL-alpha-tocopheryl acetate/kg. The study was conducted over a three-parity period to evaluate sow reproductive performance and the vitamin E tissue status of both sows and progeny at various time periods postcoitum and(or) postpartum. The basal diet averaged 8.4 mg of alpha-tocopherol/kg and .38 ppm of Se. Although litter size at birth was lowest (P less than .15) when sows were fed the basal diet, a higher incidence of agalactia when sows were fed the lower dietary vitamin E levels resulted in an increased (P less than .05) litter size at 7 d postpartum as dietary vitamin E increased. Sow serum alpha-tocopherol increased (P less than .01) at each measurement period as dietary vitamin E level increased. Colostrum and milk alpha-tocopherol concentrations increased (P less than .01) as dietary vitamin E level increased, and colostrum values were three to five times higher than at later milks. Colostrum alpha-tocopherol declined by parity from sows fed less than or equal to 16 IU/kg but was similar at each parity for sows fed greater than or equal to 33 IU/kg, resulting in a dietary vitamin E x parity interaction (P less than .01). The Se content of sow milk declined with parity but was not affected by dietary vitamin E level. Sow liver tocopherol at weaning (28 d postpartum) increased (P less than .01) as dietary vitamin E increased and increased with parity (P less than .05). Pig serum and liver alpha-tocopherol concentrations were elevated at birth and 7 and 28 d of age as sow dietary level of vitamin E increased. Upon weaning, pigs were fed a torula yeast-dextrose diet that contained 3.0 mg of alpha-tocopherol/kg and .32 ppm Se for a 28-d postweaning period. Liver and serum alpha-tocopherol concentrations declined during the postweaning period. Evidence of the vitamin E deficiency occurred at 28 d postweaning in the progeny from sows fed the basal diet or 16 IU of vitamin E; the incidence was more prevalent in the pigs from Parities II and III. These results suggest that a supplemental level of 16 IU of vitamin E/kg of diet was inadequate for the reproducing sow; higher levels are justified, particularly when females are retained in the herd for several parities.  相似文献
