One-hundred-and-twenty large white X landrace gilts were allocated at random to one of three treatment groups. Treatment A gilts were given an orally active progestogen, allyltrenbolone (Regumate; Hoechst UK) once daily for 18 days from 185 days of age. Treatment B gilts were given a subcutaneous injection of gonadotrophins (400 iu pregnant mare's serum gonadotrophin, 200 iu human chorionic gonadotrophin). (PG600; Intervet Laboratories) at 203 days of age. Treatment C gilts received no exogenous hormones. All the gilts were housed in groups of 10 from 153 days of age, and up to 203 days of age were isolated from boars. From 203 days each group of 10 gilts was subdivided into two groups of five, a boar was accommodated in a pen adjacent to each group of five and daily contact with it was allowed for one hour. Eight gilts in treatment A, five gilts in treatment B and seven gilts in treatment C failed to exhibit oestrus before 233 days of age (P greater than 0.05). The intervals from exposure to the boar to the onset of oestrus for treatments A, B and C were 8.5, 5.5 and 11.0 days respectively (P less than 0.001). Gonadotrophin treatment significantly reduced the time taken by gilts to show oestrus and the variability within the group was significantly less than that in the other two groups. There were no significant differences between the groups in the mean size of their litters.  相似文献

The rapidity and duration of the response of sheep to graded oral doses of cobalt, given as the sulphate or as a cobalt-supplemented anthelmintic Panacur SC, was assessed by the determination of serum vitamin B12 and methylmalonic acid concentrations. The rapidity of the response to the treatments, which ranged from 1 to 250 mg cobalt, was unaffected by dose rate but the effective duration was dose related. There was some evidence of a cumulative effect from repeat treatments of the anthelmintic at three weekly intervals. It is suggested that the optimum inclusion rate for cobalt in anthelmintics lies within the range 21 to 100 mg/treatment.  相似文献

Three methods of selenium supplementation, by subcutaneous injection, intraruminal pellet and addition to water, were tested in experiments with cattle and a fourth method, oral supplementation of a sodium selenite solution, was evaluated with lambs. All four methods worked effectively for periods ranging from four months to one year after treatment. It is suggested that choice of treatment will depend on the circumstances of each case, including cost, husbandry system and ease of administration.  相似文献

Chronic copper toxicity was diagnosed in a Jersey herd in the Waikato region of New Zealand following an investigation into the deaths of six cattle from a herd of 250 dry cows. Clinical signs and post-mortem examination results were consistent with a hepatopathy, and high concentrations of copper in liver and blood samples of clinically affected animals confirmed copper toxicity. Liver copper concentrations and serum gamma-glutamyl transferase activities were both raised in a group of healthy animals sampled at random from the affected herd, indicating an ongoing risk to the remaining cattle; these animals all had serum copper concentrations within normal limits. Serum samples and liver biopsies were also collected and assayed for copper from animals within two other dairy herds on the same farm; combined results from all three herds showed poor correlation between serum and liver copper concentrations.To reduce liver copper concentrations the affected herd was drenched with 0.5 g ammonium molybdate and 1 g sodium sulphate per cow for five days, and the herd was given no supplementary feed or mineral supplements. Liver biopsies were repeated 44 days after the initial biopsies (approximately 1 month after the end of the drenching program); these showed a significant 37.3% decrease in liver copper concentrations (P <0.02). Also there were no further deaths after the start of the drenching program. Since there was no control group it is impossible to quantify the effect of the drenching program in this case, and dietary changes were also made that would have depleted liver copper stores.Historical analysis of the diet was difficult due to poor record keeping, but multiple sources of copper contributed to a long term copper over supplementation of the herd; the biggest source of copper was a mineral supplement. The farmer perceived this herd to have problems with copper deficiency prior to the diagnosis of copper toxicity, so this case demonstrates the importance of monitoring herd copper status regularly. Also the poor correlation between liver and serum copper concentrations in the three herds sampled demonstrates the importance of using liver copper concentration to assess herd copper status.  相似文献

This investigation reported for the first time the occurrence of intramammary infections caused by Staphylococcus in primiparous replacement goats before parturition and the persistence of clinical Staphylococcus aureus infection during the lactation period. Subclinical infections, mainly caused by coagulase negative staphylococci (CoNS), did not persist during lactation. Genotyping analysis indicated that environment seems to play a moderate role as source of intramammary infections to goats before parturition, but causative agents of mastitis in lactating animals are not genotypically related to environmental staphylococci. The occurrence and persistence of intramammary infections in replacement goats demonstrate the need to consider those animals as potential sources of infections in dairy goat herds.  相似文献

The primary mineral assemblages and initial (26)Al/(27)Al ratios of rare calcium-aluminum-rich inclusions (CAIs) from enstatite (E) chondrites are similar to those of CAIs from other chondrite classes. CAIs from all chondrite classes formed under oxidizing conditions that are much different from the reducing conditions under which the E chondrites formed. Either CAIs formed at an earlier, more oxidizing epoch in the region where E chondrites ultimately formed, or they formed at a different place in the solar nebula and were transported into the E chondrite formation region.  相似文献

Carbonaceous chondrite condensate olivine grains from two distinct petrographic settings, calcium-aluminum-rich inclusion (CAI) accretionary rims and amoeboid olivine aggregates (AOAs), are oxygen-16 (16O) enriched at the level previously observed inside CAIs. This requires that the gas in the nebular region where these grains condensed was 16O-rich. This contrasts with an 16O-poor gas present during the formation of chondrules, suggesting that CAIs and AOAs formed in a spatially restricted region of the solar nebula containing 16O-rich gas. The 16O-rich gas composition may have resulted either from mass-independent isotopic chemistry or from evaporation of regions with enhanced dust/gas ratios, possibly in an X-wind environment near the young Sun.  相似文献
