Determining underlying factors that foster deforestation and delineating forest areas by levels of susceptibility are of the main challenges when defining policies for forest management and planning at regional scale. The susceptibility to deforestation of remaining forest ecosystems (shrubland, temperate forest and rainforest) was conducted in the state of San Luis Potosi, located in north central Mexico. Spatial analysis techniques were used to detect the deforested areas in the study area during 1993-2007. Logistic regression was used to relate explanatory variables (such as social, investment, forest production, biophysical and proximity factors) with susceptibility to deforestation to construct predictive models with two focuses: general and by biogeographical zone.In all models, deforestation has positive correlation with distance to rainfed agriculture, and negative correlation with slope, distance to roads and distance to towns. Other variables were significant in some cases, but in others they had dual relationships, which varied in each biogeographical zone. The results show that the remaining rainforest of Huastecaregion is highly susceptible to deforestation. Both approaches show that more than 70% of the current rainforest area has high and very high levels of susceptibility to deforestation. The values represent a serious concern with global warming whether tree carbon is released to atmosphere. However, after some considerations, encouraging forest environmental services appears to be the best alternative to achieve sustainable forest management. 相似文献

The laurel forest of Anaga is the most emblematic community of the Canarian Archipelago. Restoration programs are being developed
to increase laurel forest area on the island of Tenerife. Structural and spatial characteristics determine many aspects of
the community, including regeneration patterns, disturbance level, stand history. In spite of the importance of this information
for restoration, few quantitative studies have been conducted on laurel forest dynamics. We analyzed two stands of the Anaga
laurel forest of different aspect. The main difference between the two sites was the wind exposure, one leeward and the other
windward. Regeneration, spatial distribution of regeneration, tree species composition, asexual regeneration and environmental
parameters were analyzed in three 50 × 50 m plots at each site. Both sites differ in important aspects such as species richness,
species composition, asexual regeneration and dead tree composition, while they are not different in basal area, density,
density of regeneration and density of dead trees. Both sites have had similar management in the last century. Asexual regeneration
is able to maintain the present species composition, while sexual regeneration is able to offer future changes in the canopy
composition. Regeneration strategies and the effect of some environmental characteristics should be considered in restoration

Isolates of the chestnut blight fungus Cryphonectria parasitica were obtained from 44 localities in four provinces in Western Spain and characterized for vegetative compatibility (vc) types, mating types and the presence of Cryphonectria hypovirus 1 (CHV1). Among the 1232 isolates recovered from chestnut blight cankers, 11 vc types were identified: five known vc types included in EU1 to EU74 (EU1, EU11, EU12, EU28 and EU66) and six unknown vc types (CL4, CL5 CL6, CL8, CL9 and CL10). The number of vc types found per province varied between two and seven. The vc type EU11 was present in all provinces and accounted for 48.9% of all isolates. EU1 was detected in three provinces and accounted for 39.1% of the isolates. The vc types EU12, EU66, CL5 and CL6 were present in one or two provinces and comprised between 2.4% and 3% of the isolates. The other vc types were represented by only one or very few isolates. The mating type MAT‐1 was largely dominant in the provinces Leon and Avila, while both mating types MAT‐1 and MAT‐2 were found in Salamanca and Zamora. Fourteen hypovirus‐infected C. parasitica isolates were found, nine were in vc type EU1 and five in EU11, and they were detected only in the province León. Water availability and salt excess are limiting factors in Mexican mixed pine-oak forest. In order to characterise the acclimatation
of native species to these stresses, leaf water (Ψw) and osmotic potentials (Ψs) of Juniperus flaccida, Pinus pseudostrobus and Quercus canbyi were measured under natural drought and non-drought conditions under two different aspects in the Sierra Madre Oriental.
Factorial ANOVA revealed significant differences in Ψw and Ψs between two aspects, species and sampling dates. In general, all species showed high predawn and low midday values that declined
progressively with increasing drought and soil–water loss. Seasonal and diurnal fluctuation of Ψw and Ψs were higher for J. flaccida and Q. canbyi than for P. pseudostrobus. Leaf Ψw and Ψs were mainly correlated with soil water content, while Ψs of P. pseudostrobus were hardly correlated with environmental variables. Thus, species have different strategies to withstand drought.
P. pseudostrobus was identified as a species with isohydric water status regulation, while J. flaccida and Q. canbyi presented water potential patterns typical for anisohydric species. The type of water status regulation may be a critical
factor for plant survival and mortality in the context of climate change. Nevertheless, for precise conclusions about the

One hundred lines derived from 14 wheat landraces collected in Mexico were characterized in relation to spike and grain morphology
and HMW-glutenin subunit composition. Up to seven botanical varieties were identified among these materials based in four
morphological traits. The remaining nine morphological traits showed wide variation. The allelic variation at the Glu-1 loci was wide, although showed a clear risk of genetic erosion due to the low frequency of some alleles. These genotypes
could be used as genetic resources to improve important biotic and abiotic traits as well as to widen genetic diversity controlling

The characterization of plant genetic resources is the first step towards improving their use. The Spanish Plant Genetic Resources
Centre, which belongs to the National Institute for Agricultural and Food Technology Research (CRF-INIA), conserves accessions
of wild underground vetches collected in Spain. In the present work, 26 underground vetch accessions were characterized in
terms of their seed storage proteins (separated by SDS-PAGE) as a means of assessing the genetic variation of these plants
and their agronomic value. Vicia sativa cv. Vereda was used as control. A total of 54 bands were detected, of which 49 were polymorphic. Fifty eight different electrophoretic
patterns were observed in total. Protein bands were scored in terms of their presence (1) or absence (0) for all the seeds
studied, and two matrices constructed, one with all the bands present in each accession, the other with the different patterns
for each accession. Dendrograms based on the Jaccard similarity index and the UPGMA clustering method were produced from these
matrices, and the degree of genetic variation between and within accessions was calculated. The groups obtained were compared
with the chromosome number for each accession. The results reflect the great diversity of underground vetch seed storage proteins.
The aerial and underground seeds of 16 accessions were then analysed separately. In some cases, the aerial and underground

Jacaratia mexicana A. DC. (Caricaceae) is a tropical tree distributed throughout Mexico and Mesoamerica. Some evidence in Mexico indicates the
presence of an incipient domestication process in this species. Phylogeographical analyses can potentially determine contemporary
patterns of gene flow, isolation between population lineages, as well as historical processes such as population bottlenecks
or expansions on their geographical areas. In this study we reconstruct the phylogeographical patterns in populations of J. mexicana A. DC., in order to find differences between genetic variation among wild and cultivated populations utilizing chloroplast
DNA and nuclear DNA sequences. We generate a Bayesian phylogenetic tree, to estimate the divergence time between clades using
calibrated mutation rates. We also infer the demographic history of these populations using neutrality tests among wild and
cultivated accessions. We identified higher levels of haplotype and nucleotide diversity for the cpDNA and ITS types in wild
populations than in domesticated populations. These results indicate a reduction of genetic diversity derived from human selection
on domestication traits. Neutrality test suggests population expansion detected by the significant negative values of Fu’s
Fs in the cultivated populations of this specie. These process results in an excess of rare polymorphism with the fixation
of certain advantageous mutation throughout time, this implication are in accordance with the role of the strong selection
in the fruit traits of J. mexicana. The dated phylogeny constructed with BEAST program indicated a dispersion pattern for the J. mexicana ancestors across the South Pacific and South Eastern populations during the late Pliocene. Posterior dispersion and divergence
in the clades from Central Mexico and North Pacific are in agreement with the episodes of mountain-building in different regions

Particle arrangement and internal porosity of coarse fragments affect water retention in stony soils

Information about water retention in stony soils lags behind due to methodological difficulties. We applied a new strategy to measure the water retention in soils with coarse fragments (CFs) and to get insights into the effect of CFs porosity on water retention. Water retention at zero, 10, and 150 m suction, bulk density, and the mass fraction of six particle size classes were measured in undisturbed blocks from soils with variable CFs contents, originating from three parent materials. The results showed that some soils contain porous CFs (2–250 mm) with a water holding capacity as high as the fine fraction (<2 mm). The water held in the suction range of 1–150 m in a soil with porous CFs was twice as high as in soils with non-porous CFs. Multilinear regressions revealed that both the water retention capacity at 1 m suction and in the range 1–150 m were more dependent on bulk density than on the fraction of CFs and fine particles. In the soil with porous CFs, there was no correlation between their fraction and soil water retention. These results show that the bulk water retention capacity of soils with CFs is underestimated when not considering the internal porosity of the CFs. A better understanding of the effect of the porosity of CFs on bulk soil porosity and water retention is important to propose suitable pedotransfer functions and refine physically-based hydraulic functions for stony soils. 相似文献
