THE ERROR IN PREDICTING PASTURE DRY–MATTER DIGESTIBILITY FROM FOUR DIFFERENT METHODS OF ANALYSIS FOR LIGNIN

The lignin content of 50 samples of five grasses of known in vivo digestibility were determined by the methods of Armitage, van Soest and two modifications of the van Soest technique. The error in predicting DM digestibility varied from ±3.1 for tbe Armitage metbod to ±5.0 for the van Soest method. This error compares nnfavourably witb ±2.1 previonsly obtained on tbe same samples with the in vitro technique of Tilley and Terry.     

Collaborative study of the analysis of mestranol in combination with norethindrone or norethynodrel

A collaborative study of the analysis of mestranol in combination with norethindrone or norethynodrel by column chromatography and ultraviolet determination is presented. The study consisted of 4 samples which were a commercial norethindrone tablet, a synthetic norethindrone mixture, a commercial norethynodrel tablet, and a synthetic norethynodrel mixture. The samples were analyzed by 13 collaborators. Average mestranol recoveries were 100.4, 99.9, 98.7, and 101.2%, respectively.     

Survival of soil bacteria during prolonged desiccation

A determination was made of the kinds and numbers of bacteria surviving when two soils were maintained in the laboratory under dry conditions for more than half a year. Certain non-spore-forming bacteria were found to survive in the dry condition for long periods. A higher percentage of drought-tolerant than drought-sensitive bacteria was able to grow at low water activities. When they were grown in media with high salt concentrations, bacteria generally became more tolerant of prolonged drought and they persisted longer. The percent of cells in a bacterial population that remained viable when exposed to drought stress varied with the stage of growth.     

Alpine disturbance studies: Olympic national park,USA

Measurements of downslope rock-creep, of the slow rate of plant establishment on alpine and subalpine road-cuts, and of the reduction in plant cover and plant production in two alpine plant communities, illustrate the degree of disturbance that can occur. The development of large trails or roads should not be permitted in areas of such active downslope rock movement, because of the natural rate of mass-wasting. If more people are to visit and enjoy the alpine communities, asphalt paths to confine their walking are desirable, for trampling experiments showed that plant cover and plant production were rapidly reduced in even one season of light use. Recovery during the following year was, however, quite rapid—especially in the snow-bank community. Different alpine and subalpine habitats have different sensitivities to disturbance, and any plans for increased human use must incorporate this kind of information.
