Medical imaging was used before death to follow the development of U. pallikuukensis infection in muskoxen and postmortem to investigate the distribution and characteristics of parasite-associated pulmonary cysts. In two experimentally infected animals, lesions were not visible radiographically until days 178 and 191 PI, 3 months after the parasites became patent. Serial radiographs taken throughout the period of patency of one animal showed an initial increase in lesion size by day 415 PI, but by day 789 PI, lesions had stabilized or decreased in size. Although all lesions detected postmortem were not visible radiographically during life, the radiographs did provide an indication of the relative severity of infection. In contrast to other parasitic pneumonias, there was no evidence of pulmonary disease outside of the discrete parasitic cysts. Radiographs of lungs postmortem proved to be an effective tool for locating parasitic cysts in a lightly infected muskox and demonstrated a bronchovascular cyst distribution. Postmortem CT provided a more rapid and detailed assessment of the number, size, and distribution of cysts in the lungs of one muskox.  相似文献

Mercury (Hg) is an environmental pollutant which is detrimental to the health of living beings due to the toxicity in its all oxidation states. To control mercury pollution development of low cost, efficient and highly sensitive prototype mercury sensor remains a challenge. In the present work, we have proposed a low-cost prototype device based on silver nanoparticle-impregnated poly(vinyle alcohol) (PVA-Ag-NPs) nanocomposite thin film for mercury detection. The thin film, fabricated through a facile protocol, is shown to be a fast, efficient, and selective sensor for Hg2+ in aqueous medium with a detection limit of 10 ppb. We have utilized the aggregation and amalgamation of Ag-NPs with Hg2+ to develop the low-cost, highly efficient and feasible prototype mercury sensor. In the presence of Hg2+, the yellowish thin film turned into colourless due to the loss of intense surface plasmon resonance (SPR) absorption band of the silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) through aggregation and amalgamation with mercury. The developed sensor has high selectivity for Hg2+ ions over a wide range of other competing heavy metal ions, generally present in water of natural sources. The sensor response is found to be linear over the Hg2+ ion concentration regime from 10 ppb to 5 ppm. The developed sensor has shown to determine a trace Hg2+ ions in real water samples. Finally, using the proposed technique, we have developed a simple and inexpensive prototype device for monitoring in field environmental mercury pollution.

This study investigated the effects of seasonal temperature variations on the rate of development to infectivity of Ascaris suum eggs under western Canadian climatic conditions. Flasks containing a suspension of A. suum eggs were placed inside a pig barn located near Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, at monthly intervals from July 1997 to July 1998. Eggs from each flask were monitored weekly for development to the infective larval stage. Infectivity of eggs was confirmed using a mouse bioassay. Development to the infective stage took three to four weeks in summer when in-barn temperatures were similar to the external ambient temperature. Fall, winter and early spring egg development took longer as in-barn temperatures were cooler. Mid-winter egg development took as long as 11-12 weeks. The in-barn mean temperature during this period was approximately 17 C, close to the development threshold of A. suum eggs. These data are discussed in relation to similar studies from northern Europe and to potential control measures.  相似文献

The organization of the visual cortex has been considered to be highly stable in adult mammals. However, 5 degrees to 10 degrees lesions of the retina in the contralateral eye markedly altered the systematic representations of the retina in primary and secondary visual cortex when matched inputs from the ipsilateral eye were also removed. Cortical neurons that normally have receptive fields in the lesioned region of the retina acquired new receptive fields in portions of the retina surrounding the lesions. The capacity for such changes may be important for normal adjustments of sensory systems to environmental contingencies and for recoveries from brain damage.  相似文献

Low water availability is a leading contributor to mortality of woody seedlings on grasslands, including those of the invasive shrub Prosopis. Increasing atmospheric CO(2) concentration could favor some genotypes of this species over others if there exists intraspecific variation in the responsiveness of survivorship to CO(2). To investigate such variation, we studied effects of CO(2) enrichment on seedling survival in response to uniform rates of soil water depletion in six maternal families of honey mesquite (P. glandulosa Torr. var. glandulosa). Three families each from the arid and mesic extremes of the species' distribution in the southwestern United States were studied in environmentally controlled glasshouses. Relative water content at turgor loss and osmotic potential were not affected by CO(2) treatment. Increased atmospheric CO(2) concentration, however, increased growth, leaf production and area, and midday xylem pressure potential, and apparently reduced transpiration per unit leaf area of seedlings as soil dried. Consequently, CO(2) enrichment about doubled the fraction of seedlings that survived soil water depletion. Maternal families of honey mesquite differed in percentage survival of drought and in several other characteristics, but differences were of similar or of smaller magnitude compared with differences between CO(2) treatments. There was no evidence for genetic variation in the responsiveness of survivorship to CO(2). By increasing seedling survival of drought, increasing atmospheric CO(2) concentration could increase the abundance of honey mesquite where establishment is limited by water availability. Genetic types with superior ability to survive drought today, however, apparently will maintain that advantage in the future.  相似文献

In an abattoir survey of 383 horses from the four western provinces of Canada and 240 horses from Washington, Montana and North Dakota prevalences of Onchocerca sp of 11.8% and 25.8% respectively have been demonstrated by umbilical skin specimen examinations. The results of this survey are discussed in relation to the parasite's natural history and its clinical significance in western Canada.  相似文献

Rangelands occupy 50% of Earth’s land surface and thus are important in the terrestrial carbon (C) cycle. For rangelands and other terrestrial ecosystems, the balance between photosynthetic uptake of carbon dioxide (CO2) and CO2 loss to respiration varies among years in response to interannual variation in the environment. Variability in CO2 exchange results from interannual differences in 1) environmental variables at a given point in the annual cycle (direct effects of the environment) and in 2) the response of fluxes to a given change in the environment because of interannual changes in biological factors that regulate photosynthesis and respiration (functional change). Functional change is calculated as the contribution of among-year differences in slopes of flux-environment relationships to the total variance in fluxes explained by the environment. Functional change complicates environmental-based predictions of CO2 exchange, yet its causes and contribution to flux variability remain poorly defined. We determine contributions of functional change and direct effects of the environment to interannual variation in net ecosystem exchange of CO2 (NEE) of eight rangeland ecosystems in the western United States (58 site-years of data). We predicted that 1) functional change is correlated with interannual change in precipitation on each rangeland and 2) the contribution of functional change to variance in NEE increases among rangelands as mean precipitation increases. Functional change explained 10–40% of the variance in NEE and accounted for more than twice the variance in fluxes of direct effects of environmental variability for six of the eight ecosystems. Functional change was associated with interannual variation in precipitation on most rangelands but, contrary to prediction, contributed proportionally more to variance in NEE on arid than more mesic ecosystems. Results indicate that we must account for the influence of precipitation on flux-environment relationships if we are to distinguish environmental from management effects on rangeland C balance.  相似文献

Fecal samples were collected systematically in the spring from cows and yearlings entering, and in the fall from calves leaving, five community pastures in central Saskatchewan. Fecal samples were also collected systematically in the spring from cows entering, and in the fall from calves leaving, an experimental rotational grazing system. Samples were collected from 1398 animals and were examined by a quantitative fecal flotation technique with a sensitivity of ten eggs per gram. Distributions of nematode egg counts for 11 of the 12 cattle populations sampled were well described by a series of negative binomial distributions. A common value of k (a measure of aggregation) could be fitted to the counts from animals of all ages in four of the five community pastures, as well as to the counts from the cows from the fifth community pasture and from the rotational grazing system. A second value of k could be fitted to the counts from the calves from these two pasture. In addition, in three of the community pastures animals in the different age groups had the same mean count.  相似文献

Sufficient supply of pigs with calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) is essential for animal health and welfare during the growth period. However, the P content in animal manure is considered as a cause of massive environmental problems in soil and aquatic ecosystems. To complement previous findings, the objective of this study is the investigation of effects of a reduced and increased Ca and P supplementation on bone mineralization and bone structure compared with the current dietary recommendation. Another aim is to find possible serum markers that would allow the assessment of adequacy of P supply for bone health during growth. The result validated that the recommended Ca and P supply is sufficient, without the addition of microbial phytases. However, addition of P has no further beneficial effects on bone stability, while P supplementation below the recommended level affects bone development and growth performance. Reduced P levels have consequences for cancellous bone density and trabecular architecture. Further fine-tuning of the P supply in conjunction with an appropriate Ca supply will contribute to a reduction in P waste and associated environmental impact while maintaining animal health and welfare.  相似文献
