The efficacy of febantel at a dosage of 5 mg/kg (45.5% paste formulation) against inhibited early 4th-stage larvae (EL4) of Ostertagia ostertagi, other nematodes of the abomasum, and Dictyocaulus viviparus was investigated in 4- to 6-month-old Holstein calves that grazed on pasture heavily contaminated with parasites from February 24 to April 1, 1986 (36 days). In Louisiana, this is the first month of a 3-month period in which increasing numbers of inhibition-prone O ostertagi larvae are acquired, and infection risk with D viviparus may remain high. Three of 4 calves that died of lungworm infection during the pasture-exposure period were necropsied. Large numbers of abomasal nematodes, including inhibited O ostertagi larvae, and large numbers of D viviparus were recovered. Twenty-five calves were randomly allotted by equal distribution of body weight to 2 groups and treated on April 4: placebo-treated calves (n = 13) and febantel-treated calves (n = 12). Equal numbers of treated and control calves were killed at 6 and 7 days, respectively, after treatment. Mean numbers of O ostertagi in control cattle were: adults, 4,931; developing 4th-stage larvae (DL4), 1,119; and inhibited EL4, 3,410. Ostertagia lyrata, Trichostrongylus axei, Haemonchus sp, and D viviparus were well distributed in nearly all control calves. Percentage reduction of O ostertagi in treated calves, when compared with controls, was: adults, 83.6%; DL4, 57.8%; and inhibited EL4, 34.8%. Percentage reductions of other species were: O lyrata, 92.6%; T axei adults, 99.3% and 4th-stage larvae (L4), 100%; Haemonchus sp adults, 66.7%, and L4, 64%; D viviparus adults 90.6%, and immature forms, 97.1%.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

This research evaluated the effects of postharvest treatment and heat stress on the availability of wheat antioxidants using Ankor and Trego wheat varieties. The grain, bran, and 40-mesh bran samples of both Ankor and Trego wheat were kept at 25, 60, and 100 degrees C for 9 days. Samples taken at day 0, 1, 2, 3, 5, and 9 were extracted with pure ethanol and examined for antioxidant properties including the scavenging activity against peroxyl (ORAC), cation ABTS, and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryhydrazyl (DPPH.) radicals, as well as total phenolic content (TPC) and phenolic acid composition. Both heat stress and postharvest treatment significantly altered the antioxidant properties of wheat grain fractions. The ORAC values of Ankor bran and corresponding 40-mesh bran samples kept at 100 degrees C for 9 days reduced to 61 and 40% of that at day 0 on a per dry weight basis, respectively, while the ORAC values of the grain samples showed no significant change. The overall loss of DPPH. scavenging capacity was 38 and 100% for the bran and 40-mesh Ankor bran samples, respectively, and was 47 and 60% in the bran and 40-mesh Trego bran samples, respectively, whereas no reduction was detected in the grain samples under the same heat stress. Heat stress and postharvest treatment had similar effects on ABTS.+ scavenging capacities and TPC values of grain and fractions of both varieties. These data suggest that whole grain as opposed to its fractions is a preferred form of long-term storage for better preserving natural antioxidants and that the reduction of the particle size may accelerate the loss of natural antioxidants in wheat bran during storage and thermal processing but may enhance the releasable amount of wheat antioxidants from bran.  相似文献

The present study investigated the effects of pre‐weaning energy substitutions on follicular development, endocrine characteristics and subsequent litter size in primiparous sows. Sows were fed a standard lactation diet (14.1 DE MJ/kg) and then allocated to a Control (C, n = 24), Fat (F, n = 23), Sugar (S, n = 23) or post‐weaning Regumate (positive control; R, n = 22) treatment at 9 days before weaning of the C, F and S treatments. During the treatment period (8 days), 1 kg of the lactation diet was substituted with 1 kg of a fat‐rich (F, 23.85 DE MJ/kg) or sugar‐rich (S, 15.75 DE MJ/kg) substitution for F and S sows, respectively. For the R treatment, sows were weaned 8 days earlier than other treatments and fed a lactation diet at 3.5 kg with two doses of altrenogest as topdressing from 1 day before weaning until the day on which the other sows were weaned. The F treatment aimed to increase energy intake, and the S treatment aimed to elevate post‐prandial glucose and insulin concentrations. Weaning‐to‐ovulation interval tended to be reduced in the S treatment compared with C (p = 0.06) and F (p = 0.08) treatments. Body weight (BW) loss during the treatment period, post‐weaning follicle development, plasma oestradiol and pre‐weaning leptin did not differ among C, F and S sows, although BW loss was lower and leptin was higher in the R treatment. Post‐ovulatory progesterone concentration in the S treatment was higher (p < 0.05). Sows in the S and R treatments had a greater proportion of litters with larger litter sizes (p < 0.05). The outcome suggests that increasing circulating insulin and glucose concentrations during late lactation or a week of metabolic recovery positively improves subsequent litter size in primiparous sows.  相似文献

This field study investigated whether the administration of a single dose of gonadotropin‐releasing hormone (GnRH) to dairy cows without a corpus luteum (CL) 4 weeks after calving can improve reproductive performance. Holstein dairy cows underwent ultrasonography to assess the presence of ovarian structures at 29.2 ± 5.2 days post‐partum, and cows were divided into two main groups based on the presence (CL group, n = 230) or absence (non‐CL group, n = 460) of a CL. The non‐CL group was further randomly divided into two subgroups based on the administration of GnRH (non‐CL GnRH group, n = 230) or no GnRH (non‐CL control group, n = 230). Subsets of cows from non‐CL control (n = 166) and non‐CL GnRH (n = 175) groups received a second ultrasonography at 44.5 ± 5.4 days post‐partum to assess CL formation. The percentage of cows with CL at the second ultrasonography was greater in the non‐CL GnRH group (70.9%) than in the non‐CL control group (53.0%, p = 0.0006). The hazard of the first post‐partum insemination by 150 days in milk (DIM) was higher in the CL group than in the non‐CL control group (hazard ratio [HR]: 1.36, p = 0.001). The probability of a pregnancy to the first insemination was higher in non‐CL GnRH (odds ratio [OR]: 1.50, p = 0.04) and CL groups (OR: 1.55, p = 0.03) compared to the non‐CL control group. Furthermore, the hazard of pregnancy by 210 DIM was higher in non‐CL GnRH (HR: 1.30, p = 0.01) and CL (HR: 1.51, p = 0.0001) groups than in the non‐CL control group. In conclusion, administration of GnRH to dairy cows without a CL 4 weeks after calving was associated with an increase in ovulation and improved reproductive performance.  相似文献

Primiparous (P1) sows commonly lose excessive body reserves to meet energy requirements for maintenance and milk production during lactation, and consequently, post‐weaning reproductive performance may be compromised. The present studies determined whether ad libitum feeding a glucogenic carbohydrate diet (CHO) during late lactation could stimulate insulin and glucose secretion (experiment 1) and improve subsequent litter size (experiment 2). For experiment 1, 15 P1 sows, and for experiment 2, 99 P1 sows (198.5 ± 2.7 kg) were allocated randomly according to suckled litter size (≥10 piglets), either to a CHO diet (14.3 MJ DE/kg, 19.8% crude protein) or a standard lactation diet (control; 14.2 DE MJ/kg, 19.5% crude protein) at 8 days before weaning. The CHO diet aimed to provide glucogenic content (extruded wheat, dextrose and sugar) as energy sources instead of fat sources without changing total dietary energy. Pre‐prandial plasma glucose and insulin concentrations were not influenced by treatments. However, post‐prandial plasma glucose and insulin concentrations and their peaks were both higher (p < .05) compared to the control treatment. Body weight loss during lactation was relatively low at 3%–4% for both treatments and did not differ between control and CHO treatments (?7.6 ± 1.6 vs ?5.4 ± 1.2 kg; > .05). Second litter size was not influenced by diet (> .05), but the weaning‐to‐mating interval was shorter in CHO sows (p < .05). This study demonstrates that providing an enriched CHO diet in late lactation did influence post‐weaning follicle growth but did not improve subsequent litter size. This may be due to the primiparous sows in this study not experiencing severe negative energy balance and there was no second litter syndrome in this farm which limited the ability of diet to improve sow fertility.  相似文献

Short growing seasons and lack of water limit the number of crops that can be productively grown in the Northern Great Plains, but wheat is uniquely adapted to the region. Growers interested in diversification of their operations are growing more than one class of wheat to target different markets. This has led to the challenge of maintaining class purity, in that contamination with alternate classes results in lower prices to the farmer. The primary rationale is that mixtures may have poor end‐use quality. In these experiments, we tested hard red spring wheat and hard white spring wheat contaminated with different levels of soft white spring wheat, durum wheat, hull‐less barley, and the hard wheat of the alternate kernel color for milling and baking quality. Our results showed that contamination of hard red and hard white spring wheat with soft white wheat and hull‐less barley often influenced end‐use quality in that flour yield was negatively affected at relatively low levels. Loaf volume was normally only affected at higher levels. Durum wheat contamination caused fewer quality problems at generally higher levels of contamination. Contamination of hard red or hard white wheat by hard wheat of the alternate color class rarely affected quality, and effects were both positive and negative, depending on quality attributes of the pure samples. Growers wishing to diversify by growing both hard red and hard white wheat would benefit if buyers and end users were willing to accept higher levels of contamination for alternate classes that are unlikely to cause problems in eventual end use.  相似文献

The solvent retention capacity test (SRC) (AACC Approved Method 56‐11) of flour is used to evaluate multiple aspects of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) quality including pentosan content, starch damage, gluten strength, and general water retention based on the ability of flour to retain a range of solvents. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effects of grain production environment in general and crop irrigation and fertility management in particular on SRC of soft wheat flour, and to evaluate the ability of SRC to predict end‐use quality across diverse environments. Two soft white spring wheat cultivars ‘Pomerelle’ and ‘Centennial’ were produced in a range of irrigated and rain‐fed production environments. SRC profiles and milling and baking quality parameters were measured. In a two‐year study at Aberdeen, ID, with two late‐season irrigation management regimes and two crop nitrogen fertility treatments, only wheat genotype significantly affected flour SRC. In two‐year studies at Tetonia, ID, one conducted under rain‐fed conditions and the other under irrigation, additional fertilizer applied at anthesis did not affect SRC. Correlations among quality parameters were determined using the Aberdeen and Tetonia flour samples, as well as samples of the same genotypes grown in fertility trials under rain‐fed conditions at Havre and Bozeman, MT, and under irrigation at Bozeman. Patterns of correlations among SRC values were similar for both genotypes. Grain test weight was negatively correlated with sodium carbonate and sucrose SRC of both genotypes. Flour protein was strongly positively correlated with sucrose and lactic acid SRC of both genotypes. The optimal regression models for predicting sugar snap cookie diameter (AACC Approved Method 10‐52) as a function of protein, SRC, flour extraction, and kernel hardness were different for the two cultivars. SRC evaluations of flours from these trials were consistent with large genotype and environment effects, yet minimal genotype × environment interaction. This suggests that selection among genotypes within an environment will produce a gain‐from‐selection observable in multiple and diverse environments.  相似文献

On 26 December 2004, a tsunami caused extensive loss of life, damaged property and degraded agricultural land in the province of Aceh, Indonesia. While some of the associated soil chemical changes have been documented, information on soil physical properties is sparse. The objective of this study was to quantify physical properties of some tsunami-affected upland agricultural soils in Aceh, Indonesia. Soil was sampled approximately 21/2 years after the tsunami, from the 0–0.1 m, 0.1–0.3 m and 0.3–0.5 m depths in four sites in the villages of Kling Cot Aroun in Aceh Besar sub-district, Kuta Kruen in Aceh Utara sub-district, Udjong Blang Mesjid in Bireuen sub-district and Meue in Pidie Jaya sub-district on the east coast of Aceh. These sites were located within 1 km from the sea at elevations ranging from 0 to 5 m ASL. The soils were Ultisols except for Meue, which was an Entisol. Soil properties measured were bulk density, structural stability and particle size distribution. Soil water retention, pore-size distribution and saturated hydraulic conductivity were estimated by inserting the values of bulk density, clay, sand and silt contents into pedotransfer functions from the literature. The analyses conducted during this study did not permit us to ascertain what proportion of the soil particles were of tsunami-origin. Nonetheless, deposition of finer-textured material may have occurred in two of the sites. In comparison with the greyish-white, coarse textured soil in the rest of the profile, a finer-textured yellow horizon was present in the lower slopes of the Udjong Blang Mesjid site. At Meue, clay and silt contents were higher in the surface 0.3 m than in the 0.3–0.5 m depth, although a distinct horizon was absent. Particle size distribution in all sites was dominated by the sand fraction, although clay and silt contents were relatively high (20–30 g 100 g− 1) at Kuta Kruen. Among the sand fractions, fine sand (0.02–0.25 mm) was highest at Kling Cot Aroun, Kuta Kruen and in the “yellow horizon” at Udjong Blang Mesjid, making them more prone to hardsetting and compaction after intensive tillage. Soil compaction was present in all sites with that in the “yellow horizon” at Udjong Blang Mesjid being highest. The relatively low porosity in this layer may be beneficial, as it is likely to reduce the high rates of water drainage and nutrient leaching in this sandy soil. The more compacted soils were characterised by higher numbers of micropores (r, pore radius < 4.3 μm), lower water retention at saturation, smaller numbers of macropores (r > 14.3 μm), lower hydraulic conductivity and intensive gleying, indicating frequent waterlogging. The soils in all depths from Kling Cot Aroun and the “yellow horizon” at Udjong Blang Mesjid were very dispersive, that at Meue moderately dispersive in the 0.3–0.5 m depth but stable in the 0–0.1 m depth, and at Kuta Kruen very stable in all depths. Soil physical degradation was a feature of the soils examined, and its amelioration will be the key to improving and sustaining crop yields in these soils. Possible management interventions include organic amendments such as compost or manure, and minimum tillage options such permanent beds or zero tillage with retention of crop residues as in situ mulch together with suitable cover crops.  相似文献

Across species, the avascular portion of the knee meniscus cannot heal spontaneously if severely injured. The most common treatment is meniscectomy which results in osteoarthritis. The objective of this study was to assess the fibrochondrogenic potential of equine fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLS) seeded on scaffolds under the influence of growth factors in vitro to determine the potential of developing a novel cell-based repair strategy. Cultured FLS were seeded onto synthetic scaffolds in a rotating bioreactor under the influence of three growth factor regimens: none, basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) alone, and bFGF plus transforming growth factor (TGF-β1) and insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1). Constructs were analyzed for mRNA expression and production of fibrochondroid extracellular matrix constituents. Type II collagen and aggrecan mRNA were significantly higher in growth factor-treated groups (p < 0.05). Despite sub-optimal extracellular matrix production, FLS can exhibit fibrochondral characteristics and may have potential for cell-based tissue engineering for avascular meniscal regeneration.  相似文献

The effects of maternal nutrition on offspring wool production (quality and quantity) were evaluated. Primiparous Rambouillet ewes (n = 84) were randomly allocated to 1 of 6 treatments in a 2 × 3 factorial design. Selenium treatment [adequate Se (ASe, 9.5 μg/kg of BW) vs. high Se (HSe, 81.8 μg/kg of BW)] was initiated at breeding, and maternal nutritional intake [control (CON, 100% of requirements) vs. restricted (60% of CON) vs. overfed (140% of CON)] was initiated at d 50 of gestation. Lamb birth weight was recorded at delivery, and all lambs were placed on the same diet immediately after birth to determine the effects of prenatal nutrition on postnatal wool production and follicle development. At 180 ± 2.2 d of age, lambs were necropsied and pelt weights were recorded. Wool samples were collected from the side and britch areas, whereas skin samples were collected from the side of each lamb only. Although Se status did not influence side staple length in males, female lambs born from ewes on the ASe treatment had a shorter staple length (P < 0.05) when compared with females from ewes on the HSe treatment. Maternal nutritional intake and Se status did not influence (P ≥ 0.23) wool characteristics on the britch. However, at the britch, wool from female lambs had a reduced comfort factor (P = 0.01) and a greater (P = 0.02) fiber diameter compared with wool from male lambs. Maternal Se supplementation, maternal nutritional plane, sex of the offspring, or their interactions had no effect (P > 0.13) on primary (29.10 ± 1.40/100 μm(2)) and secondary (529.84 ± 21.57/100 μm(2)) wool follicle numbers. Lambs from ASe ewes had a greater (P = 0.03) secondary:primary wool follicle ratio compared with lambs from HSe ewes (20.93 vs. 18.01 ± 1.00). Despite similar postnatal diets, wool quality was affected by maternal Se status and the maternal nutritional plane.  相似文献
