Two processes that determine a good performance of plants in arid environments are phenology and resource allocation patterns. With a longer growing season and larger allocation to root, perennials achieve better access to resources and are more resilient to stresses than annuals. In traditional agricultural systems selection for optimal soil nutrient uptake has been a secondary breeding objective, because crops receive subsidies of water and fertilizers. However in arid lands, caution is required during domestication, to avoid changes in structural traits which may be the basis for sustainable production. Due to inherent differences in hierarchy among annual and perennial species, we propose that the changes in phenology and allocation brought about by selection will depend on the life cycle. We performed field studies comparing wild and selected accessions of annual and perennial species of Physaria. Life cycle determined the functional basis of seed yield. In annuals, selection resulted in early anthesis (1 week earlier), a lower allocation to roots and leaves (twofold lower), and an increase in harvest index (an increase of 62%). Selected perennials had higher biomass at maturity (45% higher), linked to a longer reproductive period (3 weeks longer) than their wild relatives. The vegetative allocation found in wild perennials remained unchanged after selection. While annuals selected for seed yield could compromise the capacity for acquisition of resources, selection in perennials did not modify the allocation strategy responsible for their positive adjustment to low resource environments. We found a trade off between seed yield potential and yield stability that resulted in lower performance of selected accessions in low quality environments in relation to their wild relatives.  相似文献

Habitat loss and fragmentation have turned into the most important threats to biodiversity and ecosystem function worldwide. Here we investigate the effects of habitat fragmentation and drastic changes in tree communities on dung beetle richness and community structure. This study was carried out in a severely fragmented 670-km2 forest landscape of the Atlantic Forest of north-eastern Brazil. Sampling was carried out in 19 forest fragments between September 2007 and March 2008 with the use of pitfall traps and flight interception traps. A total of 5893 individuals and 30 species of dung beetle were collected. Fragment area and isolation were the most significant explanatory variables for predictable and conspicuous changes in dung beetle species richness. Smaller and isolated fragments presented lower number of species, but fragments with lower tree species richness and lower proportion of shade-tolerant species were also considerably impoverished in terms of dung beetle species richness. The body mass of dung beetles were explained by fragment area and the percentage of emergent trees with smaller and less stratified fragments being dominated by small-bodied dung beetles. An ordination analysis segregated dung beetle communities between small fragments (<100 ha) and the control area. Seventy-seven percent of the species were recorded in the control area and 22% of all species were unique to this habitat. Our findings indicate that large fragments in the Atlantic Forest appear to consist in a sort of irreplaceable habitats for particular groups of dung beetle species, as well as for the integrity of their communities.  相似文献

The present study assessed the pathogenic effect of isolates E9, IBCB425 and IBCB159 of the Metarhizium anisopliae fungus, JAB06, JAB07 and AM09 of Beauveria bassiana, IBCB133 and CB75 of Isaria fumosorosea (=Paecilomyces fumosoroseus) and CG189 and CG195 of Isaria farinosa (=Paecilomyces farinosus) against eggs and larvae of the horn fly Haematobia irritans. Eggs were inoculated with suspensions containing 106, 107 and 108 conidia ml−1 of the fungal isolates and observed after 48 h to determine viability. In the larvae study, eggs were allowed to hatch into fresh bovine feces that had been treated with 108, 107 or 106 conidia mg feces−1. In both studies, 5 days after initial procedures, all formed pupae were transferred to an incubator at 27 ± 0.5 °C until the emergence of the adult flies was complete. The M. anisopliae isolates did not cause the death of H. irritans eggs, but they did promote the death of larvae that hatched from treated eggs, and therefore increased the total mortality. Isolate E9 promoted 100% mortality of treated larvae at a concentration of 108 conidia ml−1. For the B. bassiana isolates, no activity was observed against insect eggs or larvae. Both I. fumosorosea isolates promoted significant mortality (p < 0.05) of eggs at every concentration of conidia. Isolate CG195 of I. farinosa increased the mortality of larvae and pupae that hatched from treated eggs and promoted significant total mortality (p < 0.05) of the insect at every concentration of conidia.  相似文献

Although chronic renal disease is uncommon in horses, guidelines for management of the broodmare with kidney disease are needed to ensure successful foaling. Herein, we present a case report of a broodmare with chronic renal disease that produced a live foal, and parturition was predicted by monitoring pH and electrolytes in the milk. A 15-year-old pregnant mare presented with a history of poor body condition and weight loss despite an excellent appetite. At presentation, the mare was bright, alert and responsive, with severe pitting ventral oedema and vital parameters within normal limits. Plasma biochemistry revealed azotaemia, hypercalcaemia and hypophosphataemia. Based on clinical ultrasonographic and biochemical parameters, the mare was diagnosed with renal failure. Pregnancy was assessed by transabdominal ultrasound, and the fetal parameters were within normal limits; however, an increased combined thickness of the uterus and placenta and oedematous fetal membranes were found. Monitoring of mammary secretions accurately predicted the onset of foaling at 326 days of gestation. A healthy filly was delivered, and the fetal membranes were passed in a timely manner without complications. Physical examination and haematological parameters were within the normal limits for a neonate foal, except for a mild elevation in blood urea nitrogen. Two weeks later, the mare was subjected to euthanasia due to worsening of her condition. At necropsy and on histopathological examination, the findings were consistent with chronic renal disease. This case demonstrates that a pregnant horse with chronic renal disease can be managed with supportive care and produce a viable foal. Fetal well-being and mare’s prefoaling milk electrolytes were similar to parameters measured in healthy pregnant mares, suggesting that the feto-placental unit may be spared of the dam’s systemic disease. Prepartum physiological changes in the milk may be unaltered with concurrent maternal renal disease and still be useful for foaling prediction.  相似文献

Impoundments caused by dams are often responsible for intense changes in physical, chemical, geomorphological and hydrological characteristics of rivers, and are one of the main causes in global freshwater biodiversity declines. When these changes derive from multiple cascading dams, the cumulative effect can amplify, causing more pronounced consequences than each individual reservoir, which may affect, among other factors, the biotic and functional conditions of fish fauna. We aim to evaluate the impact of dam cascades on fish functional diversity by applying trait-based analysis. We evaluate the functional attributes (functional indices and community-weighted means of trait values) and environmental variables at 11 sites, which encompassed different segments affected by the hydroelectric plants (transition, reservoir, reduced discharge section and tributary) in the Antas River Basin dam cascade system located in southern Brazil. The spatial differences of the functional indices (richness, evenness, divergence, dispersion and diversity) as well as the weighted averages of each functional trait were tested through analysis of variance. The most affected functional characteristics were those related to habitat exploration by detritivorous species, especially the use of food resources and body shape, as well as the type of swimming movement. These traits were more representative at the most downstream site of the complex. Thus, our results suggest that the cascade of dams acts in the functional homogenisation of the ichthyofauna in the intermediate stretches, mainly reflecting physical changes in habitat.  相似文献
