Interest in native species is growing across the tropics as reforestation of degraded lands becomes more widespread. In this study four tree species native to Panama - Cedrela odorata, Pachira quinata, Samanea saman, and Tabebuia rosea - were grown on rural farms at two dry tropical sites in Panama for up to five years. Survivorship and growth data at these “on-farm” trials are compared to data recorded from nearby experimental or “species selection” trial sites and evaluated in terms of soil fertility and management. Participant farmers were also asked about their interest in planting trees in general as well as their interest in 61 species grown in the species selection trial.Although, on-farm survivorship was variable and generally lower than that found on the species selection trial, one species (S. saman) experienced high and consistent survivorship. High survivorship combined with growth data from farms at both sites for this species suggests it would be a good candidate for extension projects working with rural farmers. Survivorship of other species appears more sensitive to farmer management and/or local site conditions. Generally lower growth on the Los Santos farms as compared to the species-selection trial is attributed to the lower soil fertility (plant available P) at the on-farm sites compared to the species selection trial. In contrast, only one species - P. quinata - had a growth variable found to be significantly lower between the on-farm and species selection trial sites in Rio Hato. C. odorata, P. quinata T. rosea can all be used in on-farm conditions with consideration to specific site and management conditions.By 2009, approximately 80% of the farmers planting trees still wished to participate in tree planting activities. All of the farmers no longer wishing to continue with the project expressed slow growth rates of trees as a principal reason. All but one of these farmers had growth rates for his/her trees markedly below those of the species selection trial nearby. Some farmers wishing to continue had very high mortality rates (>70% for all species), suggesting non-tangible benefits for participating in project activities. Other species that were not tested on-farm but grew well in the species-selection trials and were of interest to local farmers are discussed. As long as specific site and management conditions are carefully considered, data from species selection trials can be useful in informing tree planting projects with rural farmers; however, care should be taken to manage expectations. 相似文献
Ponazuril (toltrazuril sulfone) is a triazine antiprotozoal agent that targets apicomplexan organisms. Ponazuril may have clinical application in the treatment of clinical coccidiosis due to Eimeria species in goats, along with other protozoal infections. To evaluate the absorption, distribution and elimination characteristics of ponazuril in goats, a sensitive, validated high‐pressure liquid chromatography and mass spectroscopy method for ponazuril in caprine plasma was developed. After a single oral dose of ponazuril at 10 mg/kg, plasma samples from seven weanling goats were collected and assayed. Plasma concentrations of ponazuril in the goats peaked at 36 ± 13 h post drug administration at a concentration of 9 ± 2 μg/mL. Concentrations declined to an average of 4.2 ± 0.8 μg/mL after 168 h with an average elimination half‐life of 129 ± 72 h post drug administration. This study shows that ponazuril is relatively well absorbed after a single oral dose in goats. Efficacy trials are underway to determine clinical efficacy of ponazuril in the treatment of clinical coccidiosis in goats at 10 mg/kg dosage. 相似文献
Taylorella equigenitalis is a gram-negative coccobacillus and the causative agent of a transmissible venereal disease in horses known as contagious equine metritis. Outbreaks of contagious equine metritis have been documented in various countries since 1977, with the most recent discovery in the United States in December 2008. During disease occurrences, culturing semen samples for T equigenitalis before breeding may help to prevent transmission of this disease; however, little is known about the antimicrobial activity of equine semen extenders against the organism. The purpose of this study was to investigate the infectivity levels of T equigenitalis in three equine semen extenders inoculated with known concentrations of the organism. The semen extenders used for this study included INRA 96, E-Z Mixin BF, and VMDZ. In addition, Timentin was added to INRA 96 at three different concentrations (0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 mg/mL) to investigate possible synergistic effects of antibiotic supplementation of extenders. Results were based on the visual counting of the colonies on chocolate Eugon agar plates. Both INRA 96 (with added Timentin) and VMDZ (as supplied by the manufacturer) significantly reduced the numbers of T equigenitalis isolated from semen extenders as compared with INRA 96 (as supplied by the manufacturer) or the antibiotic free E-Z Mixin BF. Our findings indicate that INRA 96 (with added Timentin) or VMDZ may significantly decrease the growth of T equigenitalis in extended semen; however, it is also important to consider the possible effects of antibiotic supplemented extenders on sperm longevity and fertility in addition to eliminating specific pathogens in semen. 相似文献
Serum concentration of ampicillin, a semisynthetic penicillin, was measured in mares at various time intervals up to 24 hours after intrauterine infusion of 3 g of ampicillin. Blood samples were drawn immediately before infusion and at 1-, 4-, 10- and 24-hour intervals after infusion. At postinfusion hour 24, two endometrial biopsy specimens were obtained to measure endometrial concentrations of ampicillin. Blood was drawn twice as part of the 24-hour postinfusion sample collection, once before removal of the biopsy specimens and again 5 minutes after removal of the biopsy specimens. After drug infusion, more diestrous mares had detectable serum ampicillin concentration than did estrous mares for all samples, except the 24-hour prebiopsy sample. None of the 24-hour prebiopsy serum samples had detectable ampicillin concentration, but ampicillin was detected in the serum of 4 of 5 diestrous mares after endometrial biopsy. Endometrial concentrations of ampicillin were detectable at postinfusion hour 24 in estrous and diestrous mares, but were not different. All 24-hour biopsy specimens had ampicillin concentrations greater than the ampicillin minimal inhibitory concentration. 相似文献
Agricultural ecosystems and their associated business and government systems are diverse and varied. They range from farms, to input supply businesses, to marketing and government policy systems, among others. These systems are dynamic and responsive to fluctuations in climate. Skill in climate prediction offers considerable opportunities to managers via its potential to realise system improvements (i.e. increased food production and profit and/or reduced risks). Realising these opportunities, however, is not straightforward as the forecasting skill is imperfect and approaches to applying the existing skill to management issues have not been developed and tested extensively. While there has been much written about impacts of climate variability, there has been relatively little done in relation to applying knowledge of climate predictions to modify actions ahead of likely impacts. However, a considerable body of effort in various parts of the world is now being focused on this issue of applying climate predictions to improve agricultural systems.
In this paper, we outline the basis for climate prediction, with emphasis on the El Niño-Southern Oscillation phenomenon, and catalogue experiences at field, national and global scales in applying climate predictions to agriculture. These diverse experiences are synthesised to derive general lessons about approaches to applying climate prediction in agriculture. The case studies have been selected to represent a diversity of agricultural systems and scales of operation. They also represent the on-going activities of some of the key research and development groups in this field around the world. The case studies include applications at field/farm scale to dryland cropping systems in Australia, Zimbabwe, and Argentina. This spectrum covers resource-rich and resource-poor farming with motivations ranging from profit to food security. At national and global scale we consider possible applications of climate prediction in commodity forecasting (wheat in Australia) and examine implications on global wheat trade and price associated with global consequences of climate prediction.
In cataloguing these experiences we note some general lessons. Foremost is the value of an interdisciplinary systems approach in connecting disciplinary knowledge in a manner most suited to decision-makers. This approach often includes scenario analysis based on simulation with credible models as a key aspect of the learning process. Interaction among researchers, analysts and decision-makers is vital in the development of effective applications — all of the players learn. Issues associated with balance between information demand and supply as well as appreciation of awareness limitations of decision-makers, analysts, and scientists are highlighted. It is argued that understanding and communicating decision risks is one of the keys to successful applications of climate prediction.
We consider that advances of the future will be made by better connecting agricultural scientists and practitioners with the science of climate prediction. Professions involved in decision making must take a proactive role in the development of climate forecasts if the design and use of climate predictions are to reach their full potential. 相似文献
Summary A recessive male-sterility (ms) gene was transferred from a diploid to a tetraploid watermelon (Citrullus lanatus
(Thunb.) Matsum and Nakai) line through a series of controlled pollinations. Progeny testing and morphological characteristics confirmed the development of tetraploid lines containing the ms gene. The possible use of this gene transfer system in the improvement of tetraploid watermelon cultivars and the use of male-sterile tetraploids in the production of seedless triploid watermelons is discussed. 相似文献
Mutation breeding was used to produce mutants of the potato breeding selection NDA1725-1 with reduced levels of tuber glycoalkaloids. Excised tuber eye-pieces were exposed to 35 Gy of gamma rays from a 60Co source. In the M1V1, leaf tissue was screened using high-performance thin layer chromatography and each plant given a relative score based on a subjective rating of band intensity. Tubers were harvested from all plants that produced leaves with relatively low levels of glycoalkaloids. Tuber glycoalkaloids were quantified in the M1V2 and M1V3 using high-performance liquid chromatography, and 35% and 23% of clones with the lowest glycoalkaloid content were selected for further evaluation in each generation, respectively. In the M1V4, M1V5 and M1V6, selection was based on statistically significant differences between the mutant clones and the controls for glycoalkaloid content, as determined using a gravimetric quantification method, as well as on agronomic and quality characteristics. At the end of six clonal generations three selections exhibited acceptable levels of tuber glycoalkaloids and retained enough of the parent clone's exceptional traits to have potential in the commercial potato chip (crisp) industry. 相似文献
