Buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum MOENCH) is a traditional Korean crop that gaining global attention as a health food due to its rich nutrition. Climate change effects such as high temperature, cold weather, flooding, and drought induce plant stress, reduced production yield of upland crops. In general, buckwheat is grown during the fall season in Korea. Flooding is a severe environmental stress factor, and flooding during the early growth stage of buckwheat causes large reductions in yield. Therefore, we established optimum growth parameters to maximize buckwheat yield. The optimum temperature for harvesting of buckwheat was approximately 1,083 ~ 1,515°C. The number of growing degree days (G.D.D.) from flowering to harvest was 509 ~ 673°C. Plant hight, stem diameter, and dry matter weight were reduced as planting date was delayed (p < 0.05). We investigated buckwheat sowing time during fall, and established an optimum cropping system according to the local climate conditions in central Korea. The growth period of buckwheat cultivar ‘Yangjueol’ was approximately 56 ~ 60 days during fall, and yield was higher than that of cultivar ‘Daesan’. The results indicated that buckwheat yield in central Korea was maximized by sowing cultivar on 25th August and cultivar ‘Daesan’ on 15th August. The yield of Yangjeol sown in spring was 119 kg 10a-1, whereas the yield of Daesan sown in summer was 158kg 10a-1. The results of this study established the effects of sowing time on growth and yield in central Korea. We propose an optimum cropping system for improving quality.  相似文献

Mycoplasma ovis (formerly Eperythrozoon ovis) is an epierythrocytic parasitic bacterium of small ruminants known as haemotropic mycoplasma, which is transmitted mechanically by biting flies and contaminated instruments. Acute mycoplasmosis causes severe haemolytic anaemia and mortality in young animals. At the same time, chronic disease may produce mild anaemia and varying degrees of morbidity depending on several factors, including age, reproductive status, the plane of nutrition, immunological status and the presence of concurrent infection. Haemotropic Mycoplasma ovis is currently recognised as an emerging zoonotic pathogen which is widely distributed in the sheep and goat producing areas of tropics and subtropics, where the disease is nearly endemic. Human infection has been reported in pregnant women, immunocompromised patients and people exposed to animals and arthropods. The current diagnosis of haemoplasma relies on microscopic evaluation of Giemsa-stained blood smear and PCR. Although there are few published reports on the incidence of haemotropic Mycoplasma ovis infection of small ruminants in Malaysia, information on its prevalence, risk factors, severity and economic impacts is grossly inadequate. Therefore, a large-scale survey of small ruminant flocks is necessary to elucidate the current seroprevalence status and molecular characteristics of haemotropic M. ovis infection in Malaysia using ELISA and PCR sequencing technologies. In the future, surveillance programs, including vector forecast, quarantine, monitoring by periodic surveys and public enlightenment, will limit the internal and transboundary spread of M. ovis, enhance control efforts and mitigate production losses in Malaysia.

This study used random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) fingerprinting for estimating genetic variation and species differentiation in three species of tilapia. A 16-mer random primer generated RAPD markers ranging from 250 to 2400 base pairs (bp). Genetic similarity estimates obtained by pairwise comparisons based on the method of Nei and Li (1979) indicated high genetic similarity (mean genetic similarity (± sd), 0.73 (± 0.15) for Nile tilapia; 0.78 (± 0.12) for Mozambique tilapia; and 0.87 (± 0.07) for Aureus tilapia) within each of the tilapia species. The average interspecies genetic similarities obtained among the three species were 0.59 (± 0.07) for Mozambique/Nile tilapia, 0.46 (± 0.09) for Aureus/Nile tilapia and 0.38 (± 0.07) for Aureus/Mozambique tilapia pair. DNA profiles generated in each species of tilapia were unique. A total of 13 RAPD markers differentiating the three species of tilapia were detected. Our study presented RAPD markers as a new class of useful genetic markers for assessment of genetic diversity and species differentiation in tilapia.  相似文献

Milkfish (Chanos chanos) fingerlings with an average weight of 16.3 g were stocked at 4000 per ha in twelve 500-m2 experimental brackishwater ponds. The duration of supplementary feeding using pelletized chick starter (21.15% protein) at a ration of 5% of the biomass, was varied between 0 and 3 months. The duration of supplementary feeding had no significant effect on the survival, growth and production of milkfish. The results indicated that supplementary feeding of milkfish was not necessary at a stocking level of 4000 fish/ha, when adequate pond fertilization was carried out.  相似文献

Spermiated male greenback flounder (Rhombosolea tapirina) were implanted with gonadotropin releasing hormone analog (GnRHa) pellets at different dosages to examine their effects on milt characteristics and plasma levels of testosterone (T), 11-ketotestosterone (11KT) and 17,20β-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (17,20βP). Milt and blood samples were collected for up to 28 or 42 days post-implantation (p.i.) in two separate experiments using fish that were slightly or moderately spermiated, respectively. In both experiments, fish treated with GnRHa pellets showed a consistent and significant increase in milt volume relative to controls, and the increase of milt volume was more rapid than the increase in numbers of spermatozoa. Spermatocrit (Sct) was significantly lower in GnRHa-treated fish than in controls. Plasma levels of T and 11KT were elevated at 7 and 14 days p.i. in slightly spermiated fish treated with GnRHa and elevated plasma T and 11KT levels were accompanied by increased milt volume early in the spermiation period. In contrast, there was no significant difference in plasma T levels between GnRHa-treated and control fish in fish that were moderately spermiated at the time of implant. Treatment with GnRHa tended to result in lower plasma levels of 11KT and higher levels of 17,20βP relative to controls, and there was a positive relationship between the elevation of plasma 17,20βP and the increase in milt volume in response to implantation of GnRHa pellet. Slow release GnRHa administration had no effect on sperm activity or pH and osmolality of seminal plasma in either experiment.  相似文献

Juvenile Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) were fed nutritionally complete, practical basal diets supplemented with bovine lactoferrin (Lf) at 0, 200, 400, 800, or 1600 mg/kg diet to apparent satiation twice daily for 8 weeks. After the feeding trial, the effect of dietary Lf on growth performance, immune function, and resistance to Streptococcus iniae challenge and low-water stress was determined. Dietary Lf did not affect growth performance (weight gain, feed intake, feed efficiency ratio, or survival) or haematological parameters (haemoglobin, white and red blood cell counts, or haematocrit) (P > 0.05). Crowding stress produced significant increases in plasma cortisol, glucose, lactate, and osmolality from baseline values (P ≤ 0.001), but dietary Lf did not affect plasma glucose, osmolality, or cortisol concentrations (P > 0.05). The level of Lf in diet had a significant impact on survival following S. iniae challenge with fish fed the 800 mg/kg Lf diet having significantly higher survival than control fish (P ≤ 0.05). There was not a corresponding increase in activity of non-specific or specific immune parameters (plasma lysozyme and spontaneous haemolytic complement activities or agglutination antibody titer against S. iniae) with addition of Lf to diets (P > 0.05), but plasma iron decreased and total iron binding capacity (TIBC) increased significantly with increasing concentration of Lf in diet (P ≤ 0.05). The ability of Lf to sequester iron, an essential nutrient required for the growth of bacteria, is regarded as one of its key antibacterial properties. The increased survival with increasing dietary concentration of Lf seemed to correspond with a decrease in plasma iron concentration and not enhancement of non-specific or specific immune functions.  相似文献

Trials of chilled (5–10° C) and cryogenic storage of grouper sperm revealed that sperm suspended in two different solutions containing 10% dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) were active after 2 days of chilled and deep-frozen storage, whereas those suspended in the same solutions containing 10% glycerol were not. Sperm suspended in the 10% DMSO sulutions were more active after chilled storage than were those in undiluted milt under the same conditions.  相似文献

Two series of feeding experiments were conducted to study the feasibility of using decapsulated Artemia cysts for direct feeding to ornamental fish. The first series evaluated the dietary values of the dried and the brine decapsulated Artemia cysts against two conventional live feeds, Artemia nauplii and Moina for adults and fry of the guppy, Poecilia reticulata Peters. In the second series, brine cysts were used for feeding to fry of four other important ornamental fish species, viz. platy, Xiphophorus maculatus (Günther), swordtail, X. helleri (Heckel), molly, P. sphenops Cuvier & Valenciennes and black neon tetra, Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi Géry, and the results were compared with those fed Moina. Evaluation of the performance of the fish fed the various diets was based on stress resistance, growth and survival of the fish. Our findings indicated that decapsulated cysts could be used as a substitute for Artemia nauplii or Moina in freshwater ornamental fish culture. Apart from being a hygienic off‐the‐shelf feed, the direct use of the cysts also signifies a new area of application for low‐hatch cysts in the ornamental fish industry, with concomitant saving in feed costs.  相似文献

An 8-week feeding trial was conducted to determine the effects of various dietary lipids on the growth, tissue proximate composition, muscle fatty acid composition and erythrocyte osmotic fragility of red hybrid tilapia, Oreochromis sp. Five isonitrogenous and isoenergetic semipurified diets were supplemented with 10% of either cod liver oil (CLO), sunflower oil (SFO), crude palm oil (CPO), crude palm kernel oil (CPKO), or a combination of 5% CLO with 5% palm fatty acid distillates (PFAD), respectively. There were no significant effects (P > 0.05) of diet on growth but fish fed the CLO diet showed a significantly (P< 0.05) poorer feed efficiency ratio compared to fish fed the CPO diet. Lipid deposition in fish muscle was mostly similar among fish fed the various diets but bone ash was significantly higher in fish fed the CPO and CPKO diets. Muscle lipids of fish fed palm oil-based diets did not increase in saturated fatty acids content but showed significantly lower polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) concentrations compared to fish fed the CLO diet. The concentrations of individual PUFA in muscle lipids were strongly influenced by dietary PUFA concentrations. Dietary lipids did not markedly affect the structural integrity of erythrocyte membranes but the erythrocytes of tilapia fed the CPO diet were slightly more resistant to osmotic lysis. It was concluded that palm oil products, especially CPO, could be successfully used in the diet of hybrid tilapia based on its availability, cheaper costs and its potential ability to enhance oxidative stability due to its low PUFA content and high natural concentrations of antioxidants.  相似文献
