Forty-one and 55 records of right-sided and systemic arterial pressures, cardiac output, and end-diastolic and end-systolic right ventricular volumes were collected from a group of 6 conventional and 6 double-muscled calves, respectively. In each group, the mean right ventricular pressure-volume loop was constructed. Global cardiac performance was significantly lower in the double-muscled than in the conventional calves. The right ventricular end-diastolic and end-systolic volumes, as well as the diastolic portion of the mean pressure-volume loop, were similar in the 2 groups. Those results suggest that the reduced cardiac performance of double-muscled calves is not due to a lowered ventricular preload and that diastolic properties of their myocardium are similar to those of conventional calves. When expressed on a body weight basis, however, the right ventricular end-diastolic and end-systolic volumes were lower in the double-muscled than in conventional calves. When expressed as a function of probable metabolic demand, therefore, the volumetric capacity of the cardiac pump appears to be reduced in double-muscled calves. The significantly lower right ventricular ejection fraction, maximal rate of ventricular pressure rise and right ventricular peak-systolic pressure to end-systolic volume ratio measured in double-muscled as compared with conventional calves suggest that reduced myocardial contractility may also be partly responsible for the significantly lower stroke index of the former calves. The cardiac pump of double-muscled cattle thus seems to be less effective than that of conventional cattle because of reduced volumetric capacity and lowered strength of contraction. 相似文献

The purpose of this work was to study electrocardiographic features of double-muscled beef cattle. Electrocardiograms were recorded on one to six occasions from each of a group of 18 conventional calves of the Friesian breed and 29 double-muscled calves of the Belgian White and Blue breed. Ages of the calves at the times of examination ranged from eight to 348 days. The Holmes semi-orthogonal lead system was used. The waves and interval durations and the tridimensional P, QRS, and T modal vector orientation and amplitude were calculated. The magnitude of the cardiac vectors was significantly lower and the ventricular waves and QT interval duration significantly shorter in the double-muscled than in the conventional calves. The P modal vector pointed significantly less downwards and the QRS modal vector pointed significantly more forwards and less up- and rightwards in the Belgian White and Blue, than in the Friesian group. Most of the observed differences might be a consequence of the bodily, and more specifically the thoracic, conformation of the former calves. However, the lower cardiac vector magnitude and shorter wave and interval durations might also reflect lower cardiac mass in the double-muscled subjects. 相似文献

Longitudinal study of the effects of lungworm infection on bovine pulmonary function 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Clinical and physiologic investigations were done weekly in 5 nonsedated Friesian calves before, during, and after an induced infection with Dictyocaulus viviparus infective larvae. Clinical, hematologic, serologic, and parasitologic findings were all compatible with the classic picture of moderate subacute verminous bronchitis. Most pulmonary function values revealed significant (P less than or equal to 0.05) changes in the 2nd or 3rd week after inoculation and maximal changes at 5 weeks after inoculation. Most marked changes included a decrease in tidal volume, dynamic lung compliance, and arterial oxygen tension, and an increase in minute ventilation, minute viscous work of breathing, and alveolar-arterial oxygen difference. Minute ventilation, dynamic lung compliance, minute viscous work of breathing, and PaO2 revealed the most homogeneous change. Conversely, maximal change of intrapleural pressure, total pulmonary resistance, and viscous work of breathing had higher variability from week to week. 相似文献

Scintigraphical analysis of the ratio of inhalation (I) to perfusion (Q) was designed to determine whether chronic pulmonary disease in horses induced mismatches in I/Q and to assess whether medical treatment would restore an I/Q distribution pattern identical to that of control horses. In addition, the results of the I/Q analysis were correlated with the alveolar-arterial PO2 difference (AaDO2). The I/Q matching found in a group of control horses was compared with the I/Q analysis of a group of diseased horses before and after their clinical signs had been treated. The analysis indicated that there was mismatching between I and Q before they were treated. The treatment improved the diseased horses, pulmonary function but there was still heterogeneity in the I/Q distribution after they had been treated. The I/Q analysis parameters were well correlated with the ratio of ventilation (VA) and pulmonary blood flow (Q), evaluated by the determination of AaDO2. 相似文献

A study was undertaken to provide further information on the ruminal, cardiorespiratory and hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPAC) physiological sequelae of hypocalcaemia in dairy calves. The functional picture observed in standing calves experiencing Na2EDTA-induced progressive hypocalcaemia showed a biphasic pattern. During the first phase (Ca2+ varying between 1.20±0.09 and 0.64±0.15 mmol/L, mean±SD), the animals became dull and lethargic, shifting their weight from one hind limb to the other, with cool extremities and hypersalivation. Their ventilation was slightly increased but their heart rate, thoracoabdominal pressure, pulmonary mechanics, haemoglobin and temperature remained constant. Conversely, their systemic arterial pressure (SAP) and the amplitude of their ruminal contractions (RCA) were severely decreased. During the second phase (Ca2+ <0.64±0.15 mmol/L), there was restlessness, tachycardia, hypertension, polycythaemia and, finally, inability to stay upright. It is suggested that the diminished Ca2+ availability caused smooth-muscle and myocardial dysfunctions which could explain the RCA and SAP changes recorded during the first phase, whereas neural and/or humoral sympathetic discharge probably accounted for the reversal in SAP and heart rate when Ca2+ was decreased further. Serum cortisol increased regularly and remained significantly correlated with Ca2+ in each animal. Moreover, regression of cortisol/Ca2+ on Ca2+/ Na2EDTA was significant (p0.001).It was concluded that mild asymptomatic hypocalcaemia severely impairs ruminal function, which will progressively worsen the Ca2+ deficit; that the inability to maintain posture in hypocalcaemia is not due to hypotension; and that the higher the HPAC response to hypocalcaemia, the higher the resistance to its effects. An asymptomatic periparturient cow with barely detectable ruminal activity may merit preventive calcium borogluconate therapy. Also, the physiological role of hypotension in explaining the clinical picture may be less important than other processes, such as neuromuscular failure. Finally, the present results imply a possible HPAC exhaustion in cows with periparturient paretic hypocalcaemia.Abbreviations A-aDO2

Pulmonary function tests, bronchoalveolar lavages, and venous blood samplings were performed 24 hours before and one hour after a standardized strenous treadmill exercise test on six horses suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in clinical remission. Pulmonary function test consisted of the measurement of the mechanics of breathing and arterial blood gases analyses. During the exercise tests, heart and respiratory rates, and venous plasma lactate, pH and packed cell volume were controlled. Venous blood was analyzed for some markers of the oxidative stress, i.e., hemolysate glutathione redox ratio and oxidized glutathione, and plasma uric acid. BAL was analyzed for cell cytology as well as for markers of oxidative stress, i.e., glutathione redox ratio, and isoprostanes concentration. The procedure was repeated twice, i.e., before and after two IV injections of 40mg hyaluronate administered at seven day intervals. The results were compared to assess a possible influence of the treatment on the pulmonary and systemic inflammatory and/or oxidative status of these horses.Hyaluronate did not influence the pulmonary function test or the physiological parameters recorded during exercise. There was a decrease in the percentage of BAL neutrophils after the treatment, suggesting a possible anti-inflammatory effect at the pulmonary level. As well, the concentration of isoprostanes in the pulmonary epithelium lining fluid was significantly lower after the treatment, which might be either a consequence of the decrease of the BAL neutrophils, or related to a possible antioxidant effect of the treatment. Lastly, the exercise-induced increase in plasma uric acid was significantly less marked after the treatment, which could be due to a systemic antioxidant effect of the hyaluronate. In conclusion, this preliminary study brings some evidence that hyaluronate could have some antiinflammatory and antioxidant effects at the pulmonary—and systemic—level in COPD horses in remission. However, it does not help to understand the possible mechanisms underlying these observations. Further studies are now necessary to better understand its action, to assess the effect of the product on the pulmonary function of horses suffering from other respiratory problems as well as to assess the efficiency of other ways of administration, i.e., nebulization. 相似文献

Genetic parameters and environmental effects for spirometric variables (SV) in calves were estimated using 734 Belgian Blue calves (15 to 297 d of age), sired by 20 AI bulls. For each calf, the following SV were measured: 1) the average ventilation (l/min) recorded during the 15 s of maximal ventilatory changes induced by lobeline administration (0.25 mg/kg, i.v.) (15-s MV(L)); 2) the vital capacity, and the maximal peak expiratory and inspiratory flows recorded after lobeline administration; and 3) the ventilatory reserve (15-s MV(L) - ventilation at rest). Analysis of environmental factors showed age of calf, herd, sex, and vaccination status had significant effects on SV. A sire model and a multiple-trait derivative-free REML procedure were used to estimate genetic parameters for SV, body weight, and muscling score. Heritabilities for SV ranged from 0.28 +/- 0.11 to 0.44 +/- 0.16. Genetic correlations among SV varied from 0.76 to 0.98 and environmental correlations from 0.69 to 0.80. Genetic correlations of SV with body weight (0.25 to 0.56) and with muscling score (0.21 to 0.76) were positive, as were environmental correlations of SV with body weight (0.44 to 0.70) and muscling score (0.09 to 0.25). These results suggest that selection may improve SV without impairing other traits of economic importance. 相似文献
