Neospora caninum is a coccidian parasite identified as a major cause of abortion in cattle. A combined infection of N. caninum with another taxonomically related parasite of cattle, Besnoitia besnoiti can occur in geographical areas endemic for both species. Both infections are routinely diagnosed serologically, and incorrect diagnosis could occur if immunological cross-reactivity exists between the two parasites. To investigate the possible degree of cross-reactivity, we compared results obtained with two serological techniques, immunofluorescent antibody test (IFA), and Western blot analysis on known positive and negative sera. The test sera were derived from naturally infected cattle and from experimentally infected Mongolian gerbils. In IFA of bovine sera, no cross-reactvity was detected at the commonly used serum dilution cutoffs of 1:200 for N. caninum and 1:256 for B. besnoiti. However, at 1:64 dilution of both cattle and gerbil sera, anti-N. caninum sera reacted with B. besnoiti antigen in some individual samples. Anti-B. besnoiti serum did not react with N. caninum antigen at any dilution. This low level one directional cross-reactivity was confirmed by Western blot analysis. B. besnoiti antigen showed two immunoreactive bands when probed with anti-N. caninum serum, while no bands appeared when N. caninum antigen was probed with B. besnoiti antiserum. Immunization and challenge experiments in the highly susceptible Mongolian gerbil (Meriones unguiculatus) showed essentially no cross-protection between N. caninum and B. besnoiti.  相似文献

Two approaches are suggested for the acceleration of the photocatalytic oxidation of organic contaminants of water: acceleration by oxidants and photo-enhancement by dyes. These processes were examined with several substances: two widely applied herbicides, bromacil (a uracil) and metribuzin (a triazine), and three proteins, studied as models of biocontaminated waters. The effects of oxygen and hydrogen peroxide indicated two different reaction patterns of photo-oxidation of the herbicides. With metribuzin, oxygen had a pronounced effect on the rate of photo-oxidation, while the influence of hydrogen peroxide was quite moderate; with bromacil, oxygen had a limited effect on the rate of photo-oxidation, which however was considerably enhanced by hydrogen peroxide. Acceleration of the photo-catalytic oxidation of colourless refractory contaminants by photo-excited dye was observed. Both UV and visible light were required for the enhanced decomposition. The mechanism of the reaction seems to involve a combination of oxidation by hydroxyl radicals, via the hole-electron semiconductor route, with subsequent oxidation of photo-intermediates by singlet oxygen formed by dye sensitization. The TiO2-photocatalyzed oxidation of proteins (albumin, ovalbumin and gamma-globulin) showed the susceptibility of proteins to photocleavage and of the amino acids to photocatalytic degradation. Tyrosine was the most sensitive, while the degradation of the aliphatic amino acids Gly and Asp was slow.  相似文献

Transport of salmonids allows upstream migrating adults to bypass barriers to migration, for example hydroelectric dams or adverse habitats. Downstream movement (“fallback”) after transport is common and removes individuals from spawning populations, with possible detrimental consequences for population productivity. Time‐to‐event analysis was used to determine effects of fish characteristics, transport conditions and environmental variables on fallback by adult Atlantic salmon transported to an inaccessible river reach as a population enhancement strategy on the Rivière Sainte‐Marguerite Nord‐Est (Québec, Canada). Of 68 salmon transported, 19 exhibited post‐transport fallback within seven days of transport. Fork length (FL) was the only factor that increased risk of post‐transport fallback; there was a 5% increase in the proportion of large salmon (≥780 mm FL) exhibiting post‐transport fallback relative to individuals of median size (750 mm FL). Although the present study was limited by small sample size, the findings will help inform design of transport programmes in freshwater systems.  相似文献

This study presents a versatile influence of sulphur (S) application on winter wheat – beginning with the influence on the grain yield and primary quality indices, followed by the one on the bread-making properties of flour and dough, and ending with the one on the quality indices of baked products. Field experiments were conducted at two locations on haplic Luvisol and calcaric Cambisol during five years. S was given as NS-fertilizers on the background of N100 during wheat tillering. Flour and dough properties for bread-making were determined by using a farinograph Brabender. The baking tests were carried out in laboratory conditions. The influence of S on the grain yield and quality, and bread-making properties of wheat depended on the year and location. As the average of field experiments conducted at two locations, the application of S significantly increased the grain yield (r?=?0.960). The increasing yields were accompanied by decreasing contents of wet gluten (r?=?0.825). However, the significant positive (r?=?0.938) effect of the S application on the Gluten index was revealed, which is a good predictor of the baking quality of wheat flour. The S addition by nitrogen fertilization resulted also in a positive shift of the N:S ratio in grains, which is better for the bread-making quality. The significant positive effects of the S application on the dough stability time (r?=?0.898) and on the farinograph quality number (r?=?0.917) were demonstrated. The loaf volume was significantly (r?=?0.842) increasing under the influence of S. Thus, the application of S in parallel with increasing yields improved several bread-making parameters of wheat.  相似文献

The effects of emulsion structure and composition of the matrix on the release of linalool (nonpolar) and diacetyl (polar) were studied using sensory evaluation, static headspace gas chromatography, and an electronic nose. The matrices used were water, rapeseed oil, and eight oil-in-water emulsions differing in oil volume fraction (0.05/0.5), emulsifier type (sucrose stearate/modified potato starch), and homogenization pressure (100/300 bar). Fat content strongly affected the release of linalool, but it was not as critical a factor in the release of the more polar compound, diacetyl. A slight effect of the emulsifier type on the release of aromas was observed with sensory and gas chromatographic methods. The reduced droplet size, resulting from higher homogenization pressure, enhanced the release of linalool but had no effect on diacetyl. Sensory and gas chromatographic methods detected aroma changes quite similarly. The electronic nose was capable of detecting only the effect of fat on linalool.  相似文献

Communitarians have alleged a connection between according specialrights to community groupings and preserving the indigenous cultureand the social cohesion of the original community. This paperconcentrates upon special group rights associated with land tenurenow maintained by Fijian Mataqali and traditional land owninggroups in Papua New Guinea. The first section of the paper assessesand compares the social consequences of each of these systems withspecial attention to the preservation of traditional culture.However, in the case of Fiji, it is undeniable that the mataqaliland tenure system has given indigenous Fijians politicaladvantages over non-indigenous Fijians, most specifically theFijian Indians. Though special land rights can possibly bejustified on the grounds of cultural preservation, their existencedoes raise this further issue of fairness. Moral considerations basedupon the territorial sovereignty of indigenous nations, rather thancommunitarian arguments, may offer a more convincing justificationof the advantages of indigenous Fijians.  相似文献

After recognition of a cluster of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection in horses and humans at the Ontario Veterinary College Veterinary Teaching Hospital, environmental contamination with MRSA was evaluated. A total of 260 environmental surfaces were sampled during periods when MRSA-infected horses were hospitalized, and MRSA was isolated from 25/260 sites (9.6%). The most commonly contaminated sites were stalls housing MRSA-positive horses, but other stalls, medical equipment, personal items, and equine restraint devices also were contaminated. The role of the environment in the transmission of MRSA infection to horses or humans is unclear. However, relatively widespread contamination of the hospital environment, as apparently occurs when infected horses are hospitalized, suggests that the environment may be an important source of MRSA infection. This possibility must be taken into consideration when designing infection control and disinfection protocols.  相似文献

A longitudinal, retrospective investigation was made of antimicrobial resistance in bacterial isolates obtained from clinical cases in a small animal hospital between 1989 and 1997. Isolates of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus species were used as Gram-negative and Gram-positive indicator organisms, respectively, and the annual prevalence of antimicrobial resistance was calculated for each organism to each of nine (for E coli) and 11 (for Staphylococcus species) appropriate antimicrobials, including enrofloxacin. Using a chi-square test for trend, statistically significant, rising trends were identified in the resistance of E coli to amoxycillin (P=0.04), clavulanate-amoxycillin (P<0.01) and streptomycin (P<0.01), and in the resistance of Staphylococcus species to erythromycin (P<0.01). There was an equivocal, rising trend for the resistance of Staphylococcus species to cephalexin. No significant trends were apparent for any of the other 15 organism/drug interactions. The annual prevalence of multiple drug resistance was calculated for E coli, Proteus species, Pseudomonas species, staphylococci and streptococci, but no statistically significant trends were identified.  相似文献
