THE PLACE OF VETERINARY ANAESTHESIA IN "THE FUTURE ROLE AND EDUCATIONAL NEEDS OF THE VETERINARY PROFESSION" AND RECOMMENDATIONS REGARDING FRAMEWORK OF EMPLOYMENT OR POSTGRADUATE TRAINING IN VETERINARY ANAESTHESIA

I would say that the ultimate position holders of the D.V.A. find themselves in, is very largely dependent on the course of events over the next few years and in no small measure to their own endeavours. I feel that the holders of the D.V.A. should view this training period as one in which they have enlarged their own over all appreciation of the subject they have studied and have therefore, gained for themselves a material advantage over other members of the profession who have not in fact followed this line of study and that although there is a certain amount of despondency in the ranks of the veterinary anaesthetists at the moment, this should not be allowed to become an obstacle in the progressive development of this group.     

Intestinal adenomatosis in the pig: histochemical and electron microscopic studies of the mucosa

Histochemical studies of normal and adenomatous intestinal mucosa of the pig showed the adenomatous epithelium to be deficient in enzymes normally found in mature absorptive cells. Electron microscopic studies confirmed that the adenomatous cells closely remsembled the crypt cells of normal mucosa.     

Immunization of foxes Vulpes vulpes by the oral and intramuscular routes with inactivated rabies vaccines.

Inactivated rabies vaccines prepared from common vaccine strains of virus were inoculated into foxes by the intramuscular and intestinal route. There were differences among the vaccines in the duration of antibody produced after intramuscular administration. Inactivated vaccines deposited directly into the lumen of the duodenum by means of a fiberscope caused seroconversion in some foxes, especially following a booster dose, but the antibodies produced were for the most part of short duration. The ERA modified live virus vaccine, in contrast, produced a satisfactory and long lasting antibody after intestinal instillation.     

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD): factors influencing the occurrence.

Breed, age, weight, type of work performed, seasonal onset, poor ventilation and exposure to moulds in the habitat were investigated in relation to the occurrence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). COPD was most commonly detected in showjumping and hacking horses. The older a horse, the more likely it was to become affected although most were 6 to 10 years of age. Of the horses in this sample of the population, which was not a random one, thoroughbred horses were affected least and ponies most often. The high incidence in ponies was related to their more frequent exposure to poor quality fodder and bedding. Most horses are exposed to the hazard of moulds, but more affected horses were so exposed than those not affected with COPD. Poor ventilation of the stable increased the chance of a horse becoming affected. Sex, body weight and season of onset of coughing had no influence on the occurrence of the disease.     

Biomimetic Pathways for Assembling Inorganic Thin Films

Living organisms construct various forms of laminated nanocomposites through directed nucleation and growth of inorganics at self-assembled organic templates at temperatures below 100°C and in aqueous solutions. Recent research has focused on the use of functionalized organic surfaces to form continuous thin films of single-phase ceramics. Continuous thin films of mesostructured silicates have also been formed on hydrophobic and hydrophilic surfaces through a two-step mechanism. First, under acidic conditions, surfactant micellar structures are self-assembled at the solid/liquid interface, and second, inorganic precursors condense to form an inorganic-organic nanocomposite. Epitaxial coordination of adsorbed surfactant tubules is observed on mica and graphite substrates, whereas a random arrangement is observed on amorphous silica. The ability to process ceramic-organic nanocomposite films by these methods provides new technological opportunities.     

The Seismic Structure of the Sun

Global Oscillation Network Group data reveal that the internal structure of the sun can be well represented by a calibrated standard model. However, immediately beneath the convection zone and at the edge of the energy-generating core, the sound-speed variation is somewhat smoother in the sun than it is in the model. This could be a consequence of chemical inhomogeneity that is too severe in the model, perhaps owing to inaccurate modeling of gravitational settling or to neglected macroscopic motion that may be present in the sun. Accurate knowledge of the sun's structure enables inferences to be made about the physics that controls the sun; for example, through the opacity, the equation of state, or wave motion. Those inferences can then be used elsewhere in astrophysics.
