Irregular plagues of house mice, Mus musculus, incur major economic impacts on agricultural production in Australia. The efficacy of zinc phosphide (ZnP), the only registered broadacre control agent for mice, is reported as increasingly variable. Have mice become less sensitive over time or are they taking a sub-lethal dose and developing aversion? In this laboratory study, the sensitivity of mice (wild caught; outbred laboratory strain) was assessed using oral gavage of a range of ZnP concentrations. The estimated LD50 values (72–79 mg ZnP/kg body weight) were similar for each mouse group but are significantly higher than previously reported. The willingness of mice to consume ZnP-coated grains was determined. ZnP-coated grains (50 g ZnP/kg grain) presented in the absence of alternative food were consumed and 94% of wild mice died. Mice provided with alternative food and ZnP-coated wheat grains (either 25 or 50 g ZnP/kg grain) consumed toxic and non-toxic grains, and mortality was lower (33–55%). If a sublethal amount of ZnP-coated grain was consumed, aversion occurred, mostly when alternative food was present. The sensitivity of wild house mice to ZnP in Australia is significantly lower than previously assumed. Under laboratory conditions, ZnP-coated grains coated with a new higher dose (50 g ZnP/kg grain) were readily consumed. Consumption of toxic grain occurred when alternative food was available but was decreased. Our unambiguous findings for house mice indicate a re-assessment of the ZnP loading for baits used for control of many rodents around the world may be warranted. 相似文献

A 3-year-old dog with cervical myelopathy resulting from a vascular anomaly is described. Marked intradural-extramedullary spinal cord compression was observed, in association with multilevel ectatic anastomotic radicular arterial branches connecting the left and right vertebral arteries. A nonpatent proximal segment of the right subclavian artery had resulted in compensatory enlargement of the left vertebral artery. Flow within the right vertebral artery was retrograde and fed into the patent distal segment of the right subclavian artery. Multiple imaging techniques including myelography, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and selective digital angiography were used to document this anomaly. To reduce spinal cord compression the largest collateral vessel was embolized without complication. Good clinical response was observed within 6 weeks and improved clinical neurologic function was maintained at the time of a 12-month re-evaluation. 相似文献

In this prospective study, the effect of thoracic positioning on the visibility and size of caudal esophageal masses caused by spirocercosis was investigated. Dorsoventral (DV), ventrodorsal (VD) as well as left lateral recumbent (LLR) and right lateral recumbent (RLR) thoracic radiographs of 28 dogs, diagnosed endoscopically with spirocercosis, were evaluated. The radiographic findings were compared with those of esophageal endoscopy. Masses were seen equally well in left vs. right recumbency as well as in DV vs. VD positions but in DV/VD views 86% of masses were detected whereas in lateral views only 50% of masses were identified. In spirocercosis-endemic areas DV and RLR views are advised as they also allow for better visualization of descending aorta aneurysms and to avoid interpreting the potentially normally visible esophagus in LLR in large dogs as a mass. 相似文献

Abstract. The present study was performed to obtain further details on the immuno-modulating effects of oxytetracycline (OTC) in carp, Cyprinus carpio L. The immuno-logical study was extended by investigating the pharmacokinetic behaviour of OTC. Oxytetracycline, at a dosage of 60 mg/kg, was administered five times intra-peritoneally at 3-day intervals; the first injection was given 1 day before immunization. The kinetics of the primary anti-sheep red blood cell (SRBC) response, during a short-term OTC treatment revealed that the kinetics of the plaque-forming cell (PFC) response was not significantly affected by OTC nor its solvent. In contrast, the number of plaque-forming cells was significantly decreased. The anti-SRBC antibody production was delayed by 2–4 days in both experimental groups (OTC and solvent). However, within 12–14 days post-immunization, the same antibody levels were detected as in the control group. High OTC plasma levels (>50 μg/ml) were detected about 10 h after a single i. p. injection. A mean plasma elimination half-life (T1 /2 ) of 34·5 h was calculated. 相似文献

We have followed the amino acids from their entrance into the alimentary tract in the form of food proteins through the successive steps of digestion, absorption into the blood stream and passage from the blood stream into the tissues, where they are concentrated by some unknown mechanism to many times their concentration in the blood plasma. We have seen something of the way in which certain of the amino acids can be transformed into one another in the body or synthesized from ammonia and keto acids. However, we have had to admit that our bodies can form in such ways only about half of the different amino acids that are required, and that the other half must be made for us by plants, bacteria or other organisms which have greater synthetic powers than we. And finally we have seen something of the manifold fates of the amino acids after they have entered our tissues; how they may be destroyed and their nitrogenous parts turned into urea in the liver before it is possible to put them to their more specialized uses, how their carbon fractions can be used to form glucose, how they may sacrifice themselves to protect us from toxic products, how they can serve as source material for certain vitamins, hormones and other compounds with physiological functions still to be identified, and how finally those amino acids which are not deflected to these various fates may enter into the proteins of the tissues and become for a time parts of our living structures. 相似文献

The percentage germination of achenes of Chromolaena odorata (L.) K. & R. stored dry in the dark at 25°C for 7 months was markedly higher than that of freshly harvested achenes. This is indicative of an after-ripening requirement that may be of benefit to the species by ensuring temporal distribution of germination. Germination of freshly harvested achenes from various sites differed. However, after 7 months of dry, dark storage at 25°C no differences were present, thus, confirming the after-ripening requirement. Although the total number of achenes per capitulum did not vary from site to site, there were distinctive differences in the number of filled (presumably viable) achenes. It is suggested that this is a reflection of the environmental conditions prevailing at the sites. Puncturing of the achene pericarp did not influence dark germination but its removal increased percentage germination significantly. Natural degradation of the pericarp in the field may, therefore, permit germination of buried achenes in the absence of a suitable light stimulus. 相似文献

Artificial sources of late leaf spot were established by inoculation of one plant at the centre of several groundnut plots differing in age. First-generation dispersal and resulting primary gradients of disease were then compared. The gradients were corrected for source strength, spontaneous infection (primary gradient), and interplot interference (first-generation dispersal). The shapes of the gradients for spore dispersal and of the gradients of disease corresponded for each age of groundnut plot, but differed between the ages. The slopes of gradients were steeper in the older plots. Spore dispersal and the resulting disease gradients were not isodiametric, gradients being most protracted in a north-to-north westerly direction. The results suggest that the strength of the sources was reduced by abscission of infected leaves in the sources of the younger plots, whereas accessibility of the canopy to the transported spores was reduced by increasing canopy density in the older ones. 相似文献
