The pike silverside has high aquaculture potential despite its slow growth. In this study, thyroxine (T4) concentrations (0.13, 1.3 and 13 nM), a control with no hormonal supplement and a negative control containing 4.5 mM methimazole (MMI) were tested to evaluate the growth of this species. Juveniles (0.2 g) were exposed by immersion to these treatments for 8 h every second day for 120 days, and growth evaluations were performed monthly over the entire trial period. In addition, tissue samples from each treatment group were assayed for triiodothyronine (T3) and deiodinase type 2 (D2) activity . The survival rates in all T4 groups were high, and a significant increase in growth was observed (average of 58%). The MMI treatment caused an increase in mortality and a reduction in the final body weight compared with the control. T4 administration did not affect the tissue levels of T3, and it decreased muscular D2 activity only after 30 days of exposure. These results demonstrated that low concentrations of T4 in the culture environment could improve the growth of this species without affecting tissue hormone levels. The technique may have useful applications for early‐stage aquaculture of this and other economically important species. 相似文献

Objective To investigate wool organophosphorus concentrations resulting from a range of farm pesticide application methods.
Design Random sampling of wool for pesticide residues and on-farm interviews to determine associated treatments.
Procedure Tasmanian fleece wool lots were sampled at random and tested for organophosphorus residues. The grower was identified and the pesticide treatments applied to the sheep were ascertained by on-farm interview.
Results The residue concentrations showed a large variation that was not accounted for by differences in treatments by growers. Organophosphorus concentrations were proportional to the number of treatments applied, and inversely related to the time between pesticide application and the subsequent shearing, and were significantly influenced by the method of application. After allowing for the time of application, plunge dipping resulted in pesticide residue concentrations 2 to 2.5 times greater than shower dipping, using spray races or hand jetting, and the use of these methods caused larger residues than the use of jetting races.
Conclusions We recommend that plunge or shower dipping should not be used more than 7 weeks after shearing, nor at higher concentration than the standard dose rate used for lice control, whereas jetting may be satisfactory for up to 7 months after shearing, provided only one application is administered. 相似文献

Somatic hybridization is a biotechnology tool that can be used in citrus breeding programs to produce somatic hybrids with the complete genetic combination of both parents. The goal of this work was to test the reaction of citrus somatic hybrids that may be useful as rootstocks to trunk and root infections caused by Phytophthora nicotianae van Breda de Haan (P. parasitica Dastur) and to citrus tristeza virus (CTV). The somatic hybrids evaluated were ‘Caipira’ sweet orange (Citrus sinensis L. Osbeck) + ‘Rangpur’ lime (C. limonia Osbeck), ‘Caipira’ sweet orange + ‘Cleopatra’ mandarin (C. reshni hort. ex Tanaka), ‘Caipira’ sweet orange + ‘Volkamer’ lemon (C. volkameriana V. Ten. & Pasq.), ‘Caipira’ sweet orange + rough lemon (C. jambhiri Lush.), ‘Cleopatra’ mandarin + ‘Volkamer’ lemon, ‘Cleopatra’ mandarin + sour orange (C. aurantium L.), ‘Rangpur’ lime + ‘Sunki’ mandarin (C. sunki (Hayata) hort. ex Tanaka), ‘Ruby Blood’ sweet orange (C. sinensis L. Osbeck) + ‘Volkamer’ lemon, ‘Rohde Red’ sweet orange (C. sinensis L. Osbeck) + ‘Volkamer’ lemon, and ‘Valencia’ sweet orange + Fortunella obovata hort. ex Tanaka. For P. nicotianae trunk and root infection assays, plants of the somatic hybrids, obtained from 9-month semi-hardwood cuttings, were evaluated and compared with diploid citrus rootstock cultivars after mycelia inoculation in the trunk or spore infestation in the substrate, respectively. ‘Cleopatra’ mandarin + sour orange, ‘Rangpur’ lime + ‘Sunki’ mandarin, ‘Cleopatra’ mandarin + ‘Volkamer’ lemon, ‘Ruby Blood’ sweet orange + ‘Volkamer’ lemon, ‘Rohde Red’ sweet orange + ‘Volkamer’ lemon, and ‘Caipira’ sweet orange + ‘Volkamer’ lemon had less trunk rot occurrence, whereas the somatic hybrids ‘Cleopatra’ mandarin + ‘Volkamer’ lemon, ‘Cleopatra’ mandarin + sour orange, ‘Caipira’ sweet orange + ‘Volkamer’ lemon, and ‘Caipira’ sweet orange + ‘Rangpur’ lime were tolerant to root rot. For CTV assays, plants of the somatic hybrids along with tolerant and intolerant rootstocks were budded with a mild strain CTV-infected or healthy ‘Valencia’ sweet orange budwood. Records of 18,770 Nelore animals, born from 1975 to 2002, in 8 herds participating in the Nelore Cattle Breeding Program, were analyzed to estimate genetic parameters for mature BW. The mature BW were analyzed as a single BW taken closest to 4.5 yr of age for each cow in the data file, considering BW starting from 2 (W2Y_S), 3 (W3Y_S), or 4 (W4Y_S) yr of age or as repeated records, including all BW starting from 2 (W2Y_R), 3 (W3Y_R), or 4 (W4Y_R) yr of age. The variance components were estimated by restricted maximum likelihood, fitting univariate and bivariate animal models, including weaning weight. The heritability estimates were 0.29, 0.34, 0.36, 0.41, 0.44, and 0.46 for W2Y_S, W3Y_S, W4Y_S, W2Y_R, W3Y_R, and W4Y_R, respectively. The repeatability estimates for W2Y_R, W3Y_R, and W4Y_R were 0.59, 0.64, and 0.72, respectively. Larger accuracy values associated with the EBV were obtained in the repeated records models. Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) are multi-functional growth factors belonging to the transforming growth factor beta superfamily, especially BMP-2, induce bone formation in vivo, and clinical application in repair of bone fractures and defects is expected. Body composition and energy requirements are different between males and females in several species, and both interfere with weight loss. The aim of this study was to compare the total and regional body composition and energy requirements in obese male (n = 8) and female (n = 8) cats, during weight loss and weight maintenance over 17 subsequent weeks after regimen. The total and regional (thoracic and pelvic limbs, and trunk) body composition was assessed by dual‐energy X‐ray absorptiometry (DXA). Females exhibited a higher fat mass (FM) than males (p < 0.05), and the trunk was the site with greater fat accumulation regardless of gender. A 23.0 ± 2.8% reduction in body weight was followed by a 50.3 ± 9.4% and a 37.0 ± 8.9% reduction in fat in the trunk region in males and females respectively. Lean mass (LM) mobilization was also increased in the trunk (p < 0.05), and the loss of LM was associated with a reduction in bone mass. The energy intake to achieve the same rate of weight loss was 12.9 ± 3.4% higher in males (p < 0.05). The cats exhibited a gradual increase in energy requirements to maintain their body weight after weight loss (p < 0.05). It was concluded that obese cats mainly accumulate fat in the trunk. The reduction in lean mass after the regimen also occurred in the trunk, with no modifications in the skeletal muscle mass of the limbs. Neutered male cats have higher energy requirements than neutered females, and gender should be considered during obesity management in cats. 相似文献

The productivity of herds may be negatively affected by inbreeding depression, and it is important to know how intense is this effect on the livestock performance. We performed a comprehensive analysis involving five Zebu breeds reared in Brazil to estimate inbreeding depression in productive and reproductive traits. Inbreeding depression was estimated for 13 traits by including the individual inbreeding rate as a linear covariate in the standard genetic evaluation models. For all breeds and for almost all traits (no effect was observed on gestation length), the performance of the animals was compromised by an increase in inbreeding. The average inbreeding depression was ?0.222% and ?0.859% per 1% of inbreeding for linear regression coefficients scaled on the percentage of mean (βm) and standard deviation (βσ), respectively. The means for βm (and βσ) were ?0.269% (?1.202%) for weight/growth traits and ?0.174% (?0.546%) for reproductive traits. Hence, inbreeding depression is more pronounced in weight/growth traits than in reproductive traits. These findings highlight the need for the management of inbreeding in the respective breeding programmes of the breeds studied here. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of seawater (SW) on the activity of antibiotics belonging to 10 families (aminoglycosides, aminopenicillins, carbapenems, β‐lactams, chloramphenicols, monobactams, nitrofurans, quinolones, sulfonamides, and tetracyclines) against Vibrio strains isolated from hemolymph of Pacific white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei, farmed in Northeastern Brazil and standard strain Vibrio cholera ATCC 19582. Susceptibility of the strains to antibiotics was determined by disk diffusion method and the minimum inhibitory concentration was determined by macrodilution method. The media Mueller–Hinton agar and broth used in the above methods were diluted in distilled water (control, 1% NaCl, pH 7.5) and SW (2.5% NaCl, pH 7.5). The antibiotics most affected by dilution in SW were tetracycline, penicillin, cephalothin, aztreonam, ampicillin, and imipenem, as indicated by a considerable increase in the number of strains classified as intermediate or resistance. Thus, in this study, the efficiency of these antibiotics on Vibrio strains was found to be reduced by contact with SW. 相似文献
