These studies evaluated the effects of betaine, provided either as feed-grade betaine or as concentrated separator by-product (CSB; desugared beet molasses), on performance and carcass characteristics of finishing cattle. In Exp. 1, 175 steers (410 kg initial BW) were fed a finishing diet based on steam-flaked and dry-rolled corn, and treatments included 10.5 and 21 g/d feed-grade betaine and 250 and 500 g/d CSB (supplying 15.5 and 31 g/d of betaine, respectively). Steers fed feed-grade betaine had greater (linear and quadratic effects, P < 0.1) DMI than control steers, but ADG and gain efficiencies were not affected by treatment. Dressing percent and backfat thickness was greater (P < 0.1) for steers that received feed-grade betaine than for controls. Longissimus muscle area was lower (P < 0.1) for steers supplemented with either feed-grade betaine or CSB than for control steers. Yield grades were higher for cattle receiving feed-grade betaine (quadratic effect, P < 0.1) than for control steers. Marbling scores were not affected by supplemental betaine, but the percentage of carcasses grading USDA Select was lower (linear and quadratic effects, P < 0.1) for steers fed feed-grade betaine than for control steers, predominantly due to a greater percentage grading USDA Choice. In Exp. 2, 312 heifers (343 kg initial BW) were used in a finishing study to evaluate the effects of graded levels of feed-grade betaine and peroxide-treated feather meal on performance and carcass characteristics. Treatments included two finishing diets (containing peroxide-treated or untreated feather meal) and four levels (0, 4, 8, and 12 g/d) of feed-grade betaine arranged in a 2 x 4 factorial. No significant interactions occurred between treatment of feather meal and betaine. Treatment of feather meal with hydrogen peroxide (5% wt/wt) increased in situ protein degradability but did not alter DMI, ADG, gain efficiencies, or carcass characteristics of heifers when it replaced untreated feather meal in the diet. Top-dressing feed-grade betaine to the diets had no effect on DMI, ADG, and gain efficiencies. Marbling scores were greater (cubic effect, P < 0.05) for heifers fed diets top-dressed with 4 and 12 g/d of feed-grade betaine, but other carcass characteristics were not altered significantly. Overall, feed-grade betaine and CSB did not alter growth performance, but did have minor effects on carcass characteristics.  相似文献

Various nitrodiphenyl ethers were assayed using a cell-free photosynthetic system and intact microalgae to approach a correlation between chemical structure and their effect upon three biochemical processes: (1) linear photosynthetic electron transport (Hill reaction); (2) photophosphorylation (energy-transfer inhibition by affecting the ATP synthetase); and (3) light-induced peroxidative degradation of thylakoid lipids (formation of short-chain hydrocarbons). Diphenyl ethers with a p-nitro group at one phenyl ring and one or two chloro substituents at the other exhibit energy-transfer inhibition. Analogs with different substituents are ineffective. A moderate electron-transport inhibition is seen with almost all derivatives. The most obvious phytotoxic effect is the occurrence of light-induced peroxidation (of polyunsaturated fatty acids) by p-nitro- and p-nitrosodiphenyl ethers. Substituents such as -OCH3, -OC2H5, -NHC2H5, or -COOCH3, -CONHCH3 next to the p-nitro group enhance peroxidative activity and are apparently important for stabilization and/or reactivity of a diphenyl ether radical originating through photosynthetic electron flow. Activity is further enhanced by substituents with positive Hammett parameters in ortho or para positions at the phenyl ring not carrying the nitro group.  相似文献

The last hours of intrafollicular maturation are important to preserve the potential of oocytes for fertilization and development. To collect mature oocytes it is consequently essential to predict accurately the time of ovulation. Therefore we have modified a regular and specific plasma LH radioimmunoassay to a convenient assay providing reliable results within four to five hours. Using this technique we have been able to detect the LH peak with a delay small enough to predict the moment of ovulation; then we have been able to observe and photograph ovulation. The antigen-antibody reaction takes place during a two hour incubation at 37 degrees C. The immune complex is precipitated by addition of a rabbit anti-gamma-globulin and incubation at 22 degrees C for 30 minutes. The variation between fast and regular assays is lower than 15%. From a study of 25 cycles in 12 animals we suggest intervals of approximately 27 hours between the beginning of the LH peak and ovulation and of about 17 hours between the end of the peak and ovulation. Intervals between the beginning of heat and ovulation appear irregular and cannot be used with certainty as a reference point to predict ovulation. Five ovulations were observed closely and in the five cases, the formation of an apex was noted Our results clearly show that with the technique mentioned above we can predict rapidly and precisely bovine ovulation.  相似文献

Monoclonal antibodies have been produced against the 81/36F strain of rotavirus. One of them, was chosen as diagnostic reagent: it showed high ELISA reactivity with all the bovine, human and porcine rotavirus strains tested and reacted with VP6, structural protein product known to support the common rotavirus antigen.

A sandwich ELISA procedure using the chosen monoclonal as “capture and detecting” antibody was performed to detect rotavirus in faecal samples from experimentally inoculated newborn calves: it always gave a negative response with meconium and a positive response for the stool specimens which rotavirus have been isolated. This assay was compared with Enzygnost and Slidex Rota Kit tests and with a non-commercial sandwich ELISA test using polyclonal antibodies: it showed more sensitivity than the agglutination test and was as sensitive as the other two tests to detect rotavirus in routine diagnostic material. The test evaluated showed no equivocal results.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To further define vertical patellar position, as measured by the ratio of patellar ligament length to patellar length (L:P), in large-breed dogs with clinically normal stifles and compare that to the L:P of large-breed dogs with medial patellar luxation (MPL). STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. SAMPLE POPULATION: Large-breed dogs (n = 50) with clinically normal stifle joints and 30 large-breed dogs with MPL. METHODS: Large-breed dogs with clinically normal stifle joints or MPL were identified and divided into groups (NORM and MPL, respectively). L:P values were determined for each dog by 4 observers from single lateral stifle radiographs. L:P was compared between NORM and MPL groups and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. RESULTS: All 4 observers found a significantly higher L:P (more proximally positioned patella) for the MPL group compared with the NORM group. Overall mean (+/-SEM) L:P were: NORM, 1.71+/-0.020 and MPL, 1.87+/-0.025. The 95% CI was determined to be 1.45-1.97 for the NORM group and 1.57-2.17 for the MPL group. CONCLUSIONS: Large-breed dogs with MPL had a significantly more proximal vertical patellar position compared with large-breed dogs with clinically normal stifles. Large-breed dogs with L:P values >1.97 are considered to have patella alta. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Proximal displacement of the patella within the femoral trochlear groove may play a role in MPL in large-breed dogs.  相似文献

A search for micro-organisms associated in high numbers with roots or leaves of corn, grapevine, chicory, soybean, sunflower, barley and sugarbeet yielded a collection of over 10 000 bacterial strains. Within this collection, antifungal strains have been selected, using direct or indirect in-vitro assays against one target fungus per crop. The target fungi were selected based on their agronomic relevance as pests. Isolates with antifungal activity were tested for their spectrum of activity against a set of phytopathogenic fungi. In 15 bacterial strains with broad-spectrum activity, belonging to the species Erwinia herbicola. Serratia plymuthica, Pseudomonas fluorescens, P. aureofaciens, P. cepacia and Bacillus subtilis, the active compounds have been identified. Bacterial strains belonging to the same taxon, but isolated from different ecological niches and/or different places in Europe, produce identical compounds. In two bacterial taxa (Erwinia and Serratia) this was reflected in a genetic conservation of the regions coding for antifungal activity. In both cases, the biosynthetic pathways proved to be genetically complex. All of the compounds identified in this study have been described previously in bacterial strains isolated from analogous or completely different ecosystems.  相似文献

  1. The aim of this study was to analyse the morphological lesion pattern of the heart of broiler chickens (Cobb 500, Hubbard F15 and Ross 308) during fattening with no clinical signs of disease and to determine the most susceptible period for the occurrence of morphological lesions.

  2. The most frequently diagnosed lesions in each genetic line were degeneration of the fibres with vacuolation, congestion of cardiac muscle, oedema and vacuolisation of the Purkinje cells.

  3. The highest numbers of morphological lesions were observed on d 38, 31 and 10 of life. The lesions were most numerous in the septum, followed by the left and right ventricles.

  4. Ischaemic cardiomyocytes were also most numerous on d 38 of life and in the left ventricle.

  5. Overload of cardiac muscle, prolonged hypoxia and increasing body weight on d 38 are the likely reasons for the largest number of lesions and ischaemic fibres, which may lead to heart failure.
