The high level of meat and saturated fat consumption in the USA and other high-income countries exceeds nutritional needs and contributes to high rates of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus and some cancers. Affluent citizens in middle- and low-income countries are adopting similar high-meat diets and experiencing increased rates of these same chronic diseases. The industrial agricultural system, now the predominant form of agriculture in the USA and increasingly world-wide, has consequences for public health owing to its extensive use of fertilisers and pesticides, unsustainable use of resources and environmental pollution. In industrial animal production there are public health concerns surrounding feed formulations that include animal tissues, arsenic and antibiotics as well as occupational health risks and risks for nearby communities. It is of paramount importance for public health professionals to become aware of and involved in how our food is produced.  相似文献

Following the decline of industrial manufacturing, many US cities have experienced severe population reductions that have resulted in large areas of vacant land. Urban agriculture has emerged as a desirable land use for these spaces, but degraded soils are common. Therefore, we measured soil and plant responses to amendments and management in urban lots where vacant houses had recently been demolished in Youngstown, OH, USA. Soil degradation was observed following demolition activities in the form of compaction (bulk density of 1·5–1·8 Mg m−3) and low soil microbial biomass C (21 mg C kg−1 soil). Our split‐plot experiment measured the effects of organic matter (OM) amendments produced from yard wastes and the use of raised beds on soil properties and vegetable crop yields. Two years after their application, OM amendments resulted in significant improvement to a number of soil physical, chemical, and biological properties. Vegetable crop yields were improved by OM amendments in 2011 and by both OM amendments and the use of raised beds in 2012. A soil quality index, developed using factor analysis and the Soil Management Assessment Framework, produced values ranging from 0·60 to 0·85, which are comparable to those reported for rural agricultural soils. All results indicate that urban agriculture can be productive in vacant urban land and that amendments produced from urban yard wastes can improve soil quality at previously degraded sites and increase crop yields for urban agriculture. Abstract. A practical and simple agro-ecological zonation of Mozambique is presented to facilitate the identification of production conditions and to serve as a basis for agricultural recommendations. The zonation is based on: FAO Major Soil Groupings, altitude and mean annual rainfall. The rationale of the zonation is evaluated by correlating these criteria with other climatic variables and the maize growth cycle. The effectiveness of the zonation was tested with maize yield data from fertilizer trials.
The results show that FAO Major Soil Groupings explain a significant part of the total variation in N and organic C contents, Olsen P, exchangeable K, pH and CEC. Altitude relates significantly with temperature, maize growth cycle, radiation and rainfall reliability. Mean annual rainfall relates significantly with rainfall reliability and radiation. Grouping the maize fertilizer trials according to the zonation criteria explained 39% of the variation in unfertilized yields and yield responses to NPK fertilization, and 51% of the variation in fertilized (NPK) yields.
The agro-ecological zonation on the basis of soil, altitude and mean annual rainfall proved to be a sound and practical way to identify land areas sufficiently homogeneous to be served by the same fertilizer recommendation.  相似文献

Obesity is a heritable trait and a risk factor for many common diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and hypertension. We used a dense whole-genome scan of DNA samples from the Framingham Heart Study participants to identify a common genetic variant near the INSIG2 gene associated with obesity. We have replicated the finding in four separate samples composed of individuals of Western European ancestry, African Americans, and children. The obesity-predisposing genotype is present in 10% of individuals. Our study suggests that common genetic polymorphisms are important determinants of obesity.  相似文献

In sheep the effects of Zn‐supplementation on the Cu‐accumulation in the liver were studied.

At a relatively high Cu‐level in the feed, dietary Zn reduced the hepatic Cu‐level in the Texel breed and in the crossbreed Texel x Friesian milksheep, but not in the Friesian milksheep breed.

On account of this result it can be concluded that in sheep the mutual interaction between Cu and Zn may be dependent on genetic factors.  相似文献

Wild potato (Solanum sect.Petota) germplasm has been collected in Mexico on nine major expeditions, as determined by 20 collections or more from each expedition currently at the United States potato genebank, the National Research Support Program-6 (NRSP-6). These have resulted in 609 accessions with good collection data. In addition, NRSP-6 has germplasm of approximately 90 other Mexican collections that are unspecific regarding date or place of collection. This expedition was funded to collect those remaining collections with no or little germplasm:Solanum clarum,S. xedinense, S. hintonii, S. hjertingii var.physaloides, S. leptosepalum, S. lesteri, S. macropilosum, S. xmichoacanum, S. xsambucinum, andS. stenophyllidium. In addition, some species and species groups (species groups indicated in parentheses) have unresolved taxonomic problems that needed clarification by additional field collections. These are (S. agrimonifolium and S.oxycarpum), (S. brachycarpum, S. guerreroense, S. hougasii, andS. iopetalum - theS. brachycarpum complex), (S. fendleri, S. papita, S. stoloniferum - theS. stoloniferum complex),S. leptosepalum, andS. macropilosum. We conducted a wild potato germplasm collecting expedition in Mexico from August 22 to October 31, 1997. Our 103 collections, 71 as germplasm collections, provide the first germplasm samples forS. hjertingii var.physaloides,S. leptosepalum, andS. macropilosum. They provide additional germplasm of the rare speciesS. clarum, S. xedinense, S. lesteri, S. xmichoacanum, S. xsambucinum, andS. stenophyllidium. We additionally gathered germplasm and field data to help resolve taxonomic difficulties inS. agrimonifolium andS. oxycarpum, theS. brachycarpum complex, and theS. stoloniferum complex.  相似文献

Pneumonia of bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) is a dramatic disease of high morbidity and mortality first described more than 80 years ago. The etiology of the disease has been debated since its initial discovery, and at various times lungworms, Mannheimia haemolytica and other Pasteurellaceae, and Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae have been proposed as primary causal agents. A multi-factorial “respiratory disease complex” has also been proposed as confirmation of causation has eluded investigators. In this paper we review the evidence for each of the candidate primary agents with regard to causal criteria including strength of association, temporality, plausibility, experimental evidence, and analogy. While we find some degree of biological plausibility for all agents and strong experimental evidence for M. haemolytica, we demonstrate that of the alternatives considered, M. ovipneumoniae is the best supported by all criteria and is therefore the most parsimonious explanation for the disease. The strong but somewhat controversial experimental evidence implicating disease transmission from domestic sheep is consistent with this finding. Based on epidemiologic and microbiologic data, we propose that healthy bighorn sheep populations are naïve to M. ovipneumoniae, and that its introduction to susceptible bighorn sheep populations results in epizootic polymicrobial bacterial pneumonia often followed by chronic infection in recovered adults. If this hypothesized model is correct, efforts to control this disease by development or application of vectored vaccines to Pasteurellaceae are unlikely to provide significant benefits, whereas efforts to ensure segregation of healthy bighorn sheep populations from M. ovipneumoniae-infected reservoir hosts are crucial to prevention of new disease epizootics. It may also be possible to develop M. ovipneumoniae vaccines or other management strategies that could reduce the impact of this devastating disease in bighorn sheep.  相似文献
