Since 2006, the members of the molecular epidemiological working group of the European "EPIZONE" network of excellence have been generating sequence data on avian influenza and avian paramyxoviruses from both European and African sources in an attempt to more fully understand the circulation and impact of these viruses. This review presents a timely update on the epidemiological situation of these viruses based on sequence data generated during the lifetime of this project in addition to data produced by other groups during the same period. Based on this information and putting it all into a European context, recommendations for continued surveillance of these important viruses within Europe are presented.  相似文献

Poisoning with cardiac glycoside-containing plants is collectively the most important plant-associated poisoning of livestock in southern Africa. As a diagnosis of this significant poisoning is currently based on circumstantial evidence, a practical chemical procedure indicating the presence of cardiac glycosides in plants and animal specimens would be of considerable benefit. The fluorescence polarization immunoassay (FPIA) method, used to determine digoxin plasma levels in humans and dogs, was adapted to estimate cardiac glycoside levels in known cardiac-glycoside-containing plants as well as in the rumen and organs of dosed sheep. Positive FPIA values were obtained with bufadienolide-containing plants, while negative results were obtained with plants not known to contain cardiac glycosides. The FPIA has aided in the diagnosis of cardiac glycoside poisoning in livestock and game in 30 outbreaks examined at the Division of Toxicology, Onderstepoort Veterinary Institute. Each outbreak is briefly described. As a result of this assay, a better understanding of cardiac glycoside poisoning has been reached.  相似文献

The nitrogen fixation ability of Trifolium vesiculosum cv. Amclo and Trifolium subterraneum cv. Mount Barker in pure and mixed stands with Lolium multiflorum cv. Midmar were compared using the nitrogen difference method (NDM). The percentage and quantity of apparent legume‐derived nitrogen, as affected by different nitrogen applications and grass seeding rates, was estimated. The response of both clover species varied with treatments in pure and mixed stands. The apparent legume‐derived nitrogen ranged from 15–98% and from 43–94%, while quantities ranged from 20–102 kg ha?1 and from 68–260 kg ha?1 for T. vesiculosum and T. subterraneum, respectively. Results indicate that the uptake of available soil nitrogen contributed to the total nitrogen content of both clover species. However, since the application of the NDM is limited, conclusions as to the response differences and the possible transfer of nitrogen to the grass component could be unreliable.  相似文献

The Chlamydiales are a unique order of intracellular bacterial pathogens that cause significant disease of birds and animals, including humans. The recent development of a Chlamydiales-specific 16S rDNA polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay has enabled the identification of Chlamydiales DNA from an increasing range of hosts and environmental sources. Whereas the Australian marsupial, the koala, has previously been shown to harbour several Chlamydiales types, no other Australian marsupials have been analysed. We therefore used a 16S rDNA PCR assay combined with direct sequencing to determine the presence and genotype of Chlamydiales in five wild Australian mammals (gliders, possums, bilbies, bandicoots, potoroos). We detected eight previously observed Chlamydiales genotypes as well as 10 new Chlamydiales sequences from these five Australian mammals. In addition to PCR analysis we used antigen specific staining and in vitro culture in HEp-2 cell monolayers to confirm some of the identifications. A strong association between ocular PCR positivity and the presence of clinical disease (conjunctivitis, proliferation of the eyelid) was observed in two of the species studied, gliders and bandicoots, whereas little clinical disease was observed in the other animals studied. These findings provide further evidence that novel Chlamydiales infections occur in a wide range of hosts and that, in some of these, the chlamydial infections may contribute to clinical disease.  相似文献

Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) are a common problem among sonographers, with prevalence in human sonographers of 80–90%. However, this problem appears to be largely neglected in the veterinary literature. Awareness of MSDs, ergonomic redesign, workplace management, and physical self-care are components to reducing the risk of developing MSDs. Work-place redesign and alterations in work flow management are discussed, and a template for a more ergonomically favorable echocardiogram table is provided.  相似文献

Trigeminal ganglion (TG) neurons are important target cells for many alphaherpesviruses and constitute a major site of virus latency and reactivation. Earlier we showed that porcine TG neurons are remarkably more resistant towards (apoptotic) cell death resulting from infection by the swine alphaherpesvirus pseudorabies virus (PRV) compared to a broad range of other primary porcine cell types and that this resistance does not depend on the strongly anti-apoptotic US3 viral protein kinase (Geenen, K., Favoreel, H.W., Nauwynck, H.J., 2005a. Higher resistance of porcine trigeminal ganglion neurons towards pseudorabies virus-induced cell death compared with other porcine cell types in vitro. J. Gen. Virol. 86, 1251-1260). Although other viral anti-apoptotic proteins may be involved in survival of TG neurons during PRV infection, an additional factor may be that TG neurons possess a cell type-dependent capacity to withstand apoptosis compared to other cell types. To investigate this, we treated uninfected porcine TG cultures, swine kidney cells, and porcine superior cervical ganglion (SCG) neurons with several apoptosis-inducing reagents (staurosporine, camptothecin and genistein). None of these reagents were able to trigger substantial apoptotic cell death in TG neurons, whereas non-neuronal TG cells, swine kidney cells, and SCG neurons showed a clear dose-dependent increase in apoptosis using either of these reagents. In conclusion, sensory TG neurons may contain a cell type-specific capacity to withstand different apoptotic assaults, including infection with an alphaherpesvirus.  相似文献

Toxic extracts of the blue-green alga Oscillatoria agardhii were tested for their effect on various isolated laboratory animal preparations. The Oscillatoria-toxins did not show hemagglutinative or hemolytical properties. An immediate rise in blood pressure was seen after intravenous injection in rats. As regards isolated organs, effects were most marked on the liver. Addition of toxic extract to isolated liver perfusion fluid led to physiological, biochemical and pathological changes indicating severe damage to the organ. Negative chronotropic and inotropic effects were found on the isolated heart. The toxins did not influence isolated smooth muscle or nerve striated muscle preparations.  相似文献
