Three decades of concern over consumption of potentially contaminated Great Lakes fish has led government agencies and public health proponents to implement risk assessment and management programs as a means of protecting the health of fishers and their families. While well-meaning in their intent, these programs––and much of the research conducted to support and evaluate them––were not designed to accommodate the understandings and concerns of the fish consumer. Results from a qualitative component of a multi-disciplinary, multi-year research project on frequent (average 108 meals per year) consumers of Great Lakes fish tell the fishers’ side of the story. We present data from 87 tape recorded interviews conducted with Vietnamese, Chinese, and English-speaking participants that underscore the quality of freshly caught Great Lakes fish and the important social and cultural benefits of fish and fishing to the consumer. We also outline the participants’ understandings of risk from eating Great Lakes fish and the way in which fishers and their families manage this risk. The paper concludes with a discussion of these benefits, risks, and risk management strategies as ways that Great Lakes fish consumers “construct” rather than “perceive” risk. We advocate for risk assessment and management protocols that involve those who will be affected the most, such as frequent consumers of Great Lakes fish, from the initial “risk characterization” stage through to any necessary risk communication.

In addition to her five years as Qualitative Research Director for the Fish and Wildlife Project, she has conducted research for the Law Society of Upper Canada, the Ontario College of Nurses, McMaster University, the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (Ontario Division), and Hamilton-based NGOs. Judy Sheeshka   is a Registered Dietitian and an Associate Professor at the University of Guelph. Her research focuses on food and nutrition policy, food security, risk communication, and the social and environmental determinants of eating behaviors. Donald C. Cole   is a physician-epidemiologist with over two decades of experience in applied environmental health. He currently teaches, mentors, does research, and contributes research evidence to public health practice both in Canada and internationally. David Kraft   is a Senior Consulting Associate with Strategic Communications Inc. In this capacity he designs advocacy campaigns, communication strategy and opinion research for many of Canada’s most important not-for-profit organizations. Recent clients have included Greenpeace, the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (Ontario Division) and UNICEF Canada. David has an MA in Sociology. Amy Waugh   is a Registered Dietitian and works for a Family Health Team, an Ontario provincial approach to primary health care that brings together different allied health care providers to work with family physicians to coordinate the highest possible quality of care for patients.  相似文献

It is debated whether species-level differences in ecological strategy, which play a key role in much of coexistence theory, are important in structuring highly diverse communities. We examined the co-occurrence patterns of over 1100 tree species in a 25-hectare Amazonian forest plot in relation to field-measured functional traits. Using a null model approach, we show that co-occurring trees are often less ecologically similar than a niche-free (neutral) model predicts. Furthermore, we find evidence for processes that simultaneously drive convergence and divergence in key aspects of plant strategy, suggesting that at least two distinct niche-based processes are occurring. Our results show that strategy differentiation among species contributes to the maintenance of diversity in one of the most diverse tropical forests in the world.  相似文献

In this survey article on Borna Disease-many years after the review of Zwick (1939)-again a modern comprehensive summary of "Borna Disease virus infection" is given. The infection occurs in horses and sheep, furthermore, in laboratory animal species inoculated experimentally; its clinical, virological and neuropathological features have been described in numerous presentations. Clinical symptoms in naturally and experimentally infected animals are characterized by initial alterations in the sensorium. The neurological symptomatology of the disease (disturbances in coordination, motor, sensory and vegetative symptoms) reflect the presumed localisation of the virus in various brain areas and the course of the disease supports the assumption of intraneural spread of the agent. In horses the incidence is highest during spring. Experimental infections show an exceptionally broad spectrum of infectible animals extending from higher mammals to birds. Our investigations make it clear that we have to differentiate between infections followed by disease (e.g. horse, rabbit, older rat) and persistent infections without overt clinical symptoms (mouse, chicken). Persistent infections are sometimes associated with fine alterations in behaviour (tree shrew) or decreased learning ability (mice). Borna Disease virus, which has not been characterized up to now, is known to grow without any cytopathic effect in tissue cultures. All tested cell lines (including those from man) could be infected. The investigations indicate that Borna Disease virus comprises an enveloped RNS-containing agent. The infection induces the production of specific antigens such as a complex known as the soluble antigen, and a 14500 dalton protein. Under natural conditions and in experimentally infected animals antibodies are produced against such soluble proteins and determinants involved in neutralization of the virus. In the central nervous system (CNS) a local immune response accompanied by the production of oligoclonal immunoglobulins is demonstrable. Besides the humoral reaction it was possible to study the influence of cellular defence mechanisms on the disease process in monkeys, rats and rabbits. Histopathologically, Borna Disease is characterized by a non-purulent inflammation of the brain and the spinal cord. Most alterations are found in the grey matter, mainly in the Ammon's horn, olfactory lobe, caudate nucleus, thalamus, lamina quadrigemina and in he cerebellar nuclei. The perivascular infiltrations, consisting of lymphocytes, histiocytes and plasma cells are most conspicuous. After introducing into developmental aspects of "Dalmatian dog research" uric acid excretion is explained on the basis of new results by the loss of a specific transport system in liver cell membranes. Therefore, uricase which is present in normal activities is supplied only to a limited extent with uric acid for the transformation into the easily soluble allantoin. As indicated by feeding experiments, the plasma urate level is increased from about 32 mumol/l (no purine intake) up to 150-200 mumol/l at very high levels of purine intake. Thus, the influence of nutrition on plasma urate level is extraordinary. The diseases urate-urolithiasis and "bronze syndrome" associated with dalmatian urate metabolism are characterized in view of the typical pattern of the diseases and of the therapeutical and prophylactical measures to be taken.  相似文献

Flunixin is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that has anti-inflammatory, anti-pyretic, and analgesic effects. Recently, a novel transdermal formulation was developed (Finadyne® Transdermal, MSD Animal Health) and is now the first NSAID registered to be administered as a pour-on product in cattle. According to the manufacturer's instructions, the pour-on product should be applied only to dry skin and exposure to rain should be avoided for at least 6 hr after application. The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of simulated exposure to light or heavy rain on flunixin absorption and bioavailability within the first 4 hr after administration. Therefore, an isocratic HPLC method was developed to quantify flunixin concentrations in bovine serum by UV detection. Light rain decreased flunixin absorption only when rain started immediately after flunixin administration, while light rain starting more than 30 min after administration of flunixin had no effect on absorption. Absorption and bioavailability of flunixin was impacted under simulated heavy rain conditions, when exposure to rain occurred within one hour after the application of the pour-on formulation, but not later.  相似文献
