The environmental behavior and fate of tributyltin (TBT) in the northern Ariake Sea, resulting from the use of TBT-containing
antifouling paints on hulls of ships, pleasure crafts and docking facilities, was assessed by numerical simulations. First,
a mathematical model was devised on the basis of a non-steady state equilibrium, one box multi-compartment model consisting
of the surface micro-layer, the water column, the mud-layer, and the bottom sediment compartments. The movement of TBT among
the four compartments was modeled by resuspension of bottom mud, deposition of suspended sediment, film penetration and water
advection in each compartment. Furthermore, a one-dimensional diffusion equation was introduced into the bottom sediment compartment
to calculate profile distribution of TBT. The reactivity of TBT considered within the compartments included biological degradation,
adsorption to particulate matter and diffusion. Next, the optimal amount of past TBT loads, reflecting the recent observations
of TBT concentration in the waters and sediments of the northern Ariake Sea, was searched by a simple genetic algorithm. The
relative sensitivity of various model parameters were also determined to identify the more important parameters for estimating
the environmental behavior and fate of TBT. Finally, the future status of TBT contamination of the northern Ariake Sea was
predicted assuming the discontinued use of TBT-containing antifouling paints. Despite its simple model structure relative
to hydraulics, it was concluded that this multi-compartment model adequately estimated the environmental behavior and fate

White Leghorn chickens were divided into the control, low-carbohydrate (CHO), and CHO-free groups to investigate dietary CHO’s significance on histological features of chicken ileal mucosa. Paraffin sections of distal ileum from each chicken were stained by periodic acid-Schiff reaction and subjected to morphometrical analysis. Most villi in the control group had a fingerlike shape but those of the experimental groups showed irregular shapes. Villus height, crypt depth and the number of mitotic cells per crypt were significantly lower in the CHO-free group than in the control group. The density of goblet cells also showed a significant decreasing trend with a reduction in dietary CHO level. In conclusion, dietary CHO positively affects the proliferation of epithelial cells in the chicken ileum. 相似文献

Understanding the seasonal and regional patterns of nitrogen (N) components in the headwaters of forested watersheds is important for forests management. Here, we investigated the NO3-N concentration and its seasonal variations in the baseflow headwaters in Japanese coniferous forests with different N saturation status in five regions (i.e., Nagano, Tokyo, Aichi, Kochi and Mie). We found that the ratios of NO3-N to DON were significantly higher in the N-saturated regions including Nagano (14.1 ± 2.2) and Tokyo (16.5 ± 4.1), compared with the regions, which didn't experience N saturation including Aichi (1.4 ± 0.2), Kochi (5.1 ± 1.8), and Mie (2.2 ± 0.5). In comparison with the regions without experiencing N saturation, the relatively higher NO3-N concentration, as well as its contrastive variation between growing season and dormant season, was also characteristic of the seasonal NO3-N concentration in the N-saturated regions. Our findings have indicated that NO3-N concentration, its seasonal variations, and the ratio of NO3-N to DON, are the better and applicable indicators for evaluating N saturation status in Japanese coniferous forests. 相似文献

Antioxidant and antiulcerative properties of phenolics from Chinese quince, quince, and apple fruits

To evaluate the health benefits of Chinese quince and quince phenolics, their antioxidant properties and antiulcerative activity were investigated in comparison with apple phenolics as a reference. The strength of antioxidant activity and DPPH radical scavenging activity of these fruit phenolics varied according to different in vitro evaluation systems, whereas the antioxidative property of rat blood increased in all rats orally administered phenolics. Ferulic acid and isoferulic acid were detected as major metabolites in rats given apple phenolics, quince phenolics, and 5-caffeoylquinic acid standard. (-)-Epicatechin and its 3'-O-methyl ether could be detected in rats administered apple phenolics and (-)-epicatechin standard. In the ethanol-induced gastric ulcer, pre-administration of Chinese quince and quince phenolics suppressed the occurrence of gastric lesions in rats, whereas apple phenolics seemed to promote ulceration. The trend of myeloperoxidase activity was similar to that of the ulcer index. The results showed that Chinese quince and quince phenolics might have health benefits by acting both in blood vessels and on the gastrointestinal tract. 相似文献

In closed water bodies with significant organic pollution, anoxification due to thermal stratification leads to the elution of nitrogen and phosphorus from the bottom sediment and the generation of sulfide, resulting in further degradation of the water environment. This study focuses on the water quality dynamics in an organically polluted reservoir exhibiting long-term anoxification using two approaches: (1) field observations of seasonal changes in vertical profiles of dissolved oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfide and (2) construction of a water quality prediction model based on an ecosystem model incorporated with anaerobic biochemical processes. Iron and sulfate reduction occurred simultaneously because nitrate–nitrogen was reduced by denitrifying bacteria after the anoxification, and iron reduction became the main factor of the increase in ammonium–nitrogen and phosphate–phosphorus. The redox state of the bottom sediment surface, when anoxification began to occur, greatly affected the water quality dynamics caused by gradual reductive reactions under anaerobic conditions. Furthermore, the calculation accuracy of ammonium–nitrogen, phosphate–phosphorus, and sulfide was highly improved by modifying the conventional model based on the field observations. The characteristics of water quality under anaerobic conditions were sufficiently reflected in the upgraded ecosystem model. The proposed water quality prediction model could be used to quantitatively estimate the water environment dynamics in organically polluted water bodies. The model could be developed further in the future to solve the problems caused by long-term anoxification. 相似文献
