A double-outlet left ventricle (LV), with a valved conduit interposed between the LV apex and the aorta, was created in 7 dogs with subaortic stenosis. Of 8 dogs in which the implantation was attempted, 1 died following thoracotomy but before conduit implantation could be performed, 1 died from hemorrhage 24 hours after surgery, 1 died from septicemia as a sequel to pneumonia 10 days after surgery, 1 died from "shock-lung" 4 days after surgery, and 4 were functionally normal 22, 12, 6, and 2 months after surgery. In the 7 dogs in which the implantation was completed, the mean LV to aorta (LV-Ao) pressure gradient was significantly (P less than 0.01) reduced by the implantation. Diastolic and systolic murmurs were detected over the prosthetic valve area in 3 of the 4 surviving dogs 1 to 4 days postoperatively, but the murmurs gradually decreased in intensity until they disappeared after 1 month. The 4 survivors had no angiographic evidence of prosthetic valve insufficiency at 2 months or at 1 year. In 3 of the survivors, the LV-Ao pressure gradients 2 months postoperatively were 45, 20, and 0 mm of Hg, as compared with 120, 90, and 50 mm of Hg preoperatively. Postoperative pressure measurements were not obtained on 1 surviving dog. 相似文献

The psittacine skull is a complex anatomic structure, frequently traumatized but difficult to adequately image with standard radiographic procedures. Multiple views including a ventrodorsal, a lateral, and complementary oblique projections are necessary to fully evaluate potential skull fractures in the avian patient. Magnification radiography is a relatively easy procedure that aids the review of small osseous structures. Familiarity with psittacine skull anatomy greatly facilitates radiographic interpretation of cranial trauma. 相似文献

Ophthalmoplegia and blindness caused by squamous cell carcinoma were reported in a cat. Unilateral functional deficits of cranial nerves II, III, IV, and VI and of the sympathetic nerve supply caused blindness, complete ophthalmoplegia, and Horner syndrome. Radiography and computed tomography revealed a proliferating bony lesion associated with the right tympanic bulla, right temporal bone, right side of the mandible, and left frontal bone. A focal area of bony destruction involved the right sphenoid bone. The cat was euthanatized and necropsied. Squamous cell carcinoma was identified invading the bones and rostral part of the right side of the skull. The tumor had extended through the sphenoid bones into the region of the cavernous sinus and had surrounded the cranial nerves passing through this region. It also had invested connective tissue surrounding the optic nerves and had invaded the right globe through the lamina cribrosa. This represents an unusual distribution for ocular cranial squamous cell carcinoma in a cat. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to describe the ultrasonographic appearance of biliary cystadenomas in cats and compare the findings to a similar rare form of liver tumor in humans. Biliary cystadenomas are uncommon, benign liver tumors of older cats that may occur as focal or multifocal cystic lesions within the liver. The records of 10 cats which had abdominal ultrasonography and histologic diagnosis of biliary cystadenoma were reviewed. The average age of affected cats was 13.3 years (range 10-16 years). Eight cats were neutered males and two were neutered females. In three cats, the tumors were not seen ultrasonographically due to their small size or from being obscured by near-field reverberation echoes. The remaining seven cats had solitary (4 cats) or multifocal (3 cats) masses corresponding to variable ultrasonographic patterns: multilocular masses containing thin-walled cysts, hyperechoic masses with cystic components, or masses of mixed echogenicity with cystic components. The masses had variable ultrasonographic patterns when multifocal disease was present. Recognizable cysts were evident somewhere within the tumors seen ultrasonographically, although sometimes the cysts appeared very small. The biliary cystadenomas were thought to be clinically silent. Although liver enlargement or a cranial abdominal mass was palpable in 4 cats, no consistent trend of clinical signs, CBC or serum biochemical abnormalities could be directly attributed to biliary cystadenoma. The treatment of choice is surgical resection of the tumor, as continued growth may compress adjacent vital structures within the liver. The differential diagnosis of biliary cystadenomas from other cystic liver lesions such as hepatic cysts, hematomas, abscesses, parasitic cysts, or other liver tumors is discussed. 相似文献

A technique for scintigraphically quantitating solid-phase gastric emptying in the dog was developed in a Beagle model. The test meal was determined to empty in a linear fashion, indicating a solid-phase label. The evaluation was performed on a group of dogs presented for gastrointestinal signs that were judged to have normal liquid barium sulfate fluoroscopic and radiographic studies. The results of this study indicate that this technique is valuable for identifying those patients with surgically correctable pyloric obstruction that exhibit normal gastric emptying of liquid barium. 相似文献

Transcolonic 123 I-Iodoamphetamine is rapidly absorbed across the colonic mucosa and binds to amine receptors in the liver and lungs. During the first ten minutes following colonic administration, a simple ratio of lung counts to lung counts plus liver counts provides an accurate estimate of the fraction of portal blood that bypasses hepatic sinusoids in dogs with portosystemic shunts. Studies were performed on 24 dogs with suspect portosystemic shunt. Shunt fraction values for 18 dogs with surgically confirmed portosystemic shunt were obviously higher than published values for normal dogs, and also significantly higher than values for the other six dogs, later confirmed to lack shunts. Postoperative studies were repeated on ten dogs with single shunt vessels 1–2 days after shunt closure. Total shunt ligation resulted in normal postoperative shunt fraction, whereas partial shunt ligation resulted in persistant elevation of shunt fraction. Transcolonic iodoamphetamine scintigraphy is noninvasive, easy to perform, and provides an accurate method to diagnose dogs with portosystemic shunt. 相似文献

Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is a fatal Arthus-type immune response of cats to infection with FIP virus, a mutant of the ubiquitous feline enteric coronavirus (FECV). The disease may occur systemically or in any single organ system, and primary neurologic disease is a common subset of such manifestations. We examined 16 domestic cats with clinical neurologic FIP and 8 control cats with nonneurologic FIP, with the intention of identifying the ante-and postmortem diagnostic tests that most contribute to accurate diagnosis. Of the 16 cats with neurologic FIP, 15 were less than 2 years of age and all 16 originated from large multiplecat households. The most useful antemortem indicators of disease were positive anti-coronavirus IgG titer in cerebrospinal fluid, high serum total protein concentration, and findings on magnetic resonance imaging suggesting periventricular contrast enhancement, ventricular dilatation, and hydrocephalus. Postmortem diagnosis was facilitated by FIP monoclonal antibody staining of affected tissue and coronavirus-specific polymerase chain reaction. Most cats with neurologic and ocular forms of FIP had patchy, focal lesions, suggesting that recently developed technologies described in this report may be useful for evaluation of cats with suspected FIP. 相似文献

A series of CT imaging experiments was performed to test the hypothesis that when the tympanic bulla is filled with fluid there would be a false impression of bulla wall thickening. CT images were obtained before and after introduction of water in the tympanic bulla of a fresh canine cadaver. Images were acquired using different mA settings, slice thicknesses, reconstruction algorithms, and displayed at different window widths. The wall of the fluid filled bulla appeared thicker than that of the air filled bulla. This artifact was also demonstrated on a phantom composed of a thin (0.5 mm) and a thick (5 mm) piece of aluminum imaged in air and water. The effect was more apparent when images were acquired as thick slices (>5 mm), reconstructed with a soft tissue algorithm, or displayed with a narrow window (<250 CT numbers). The radiologist must be aware of this artifact when interpreting CT images of the tympanic bullae. 相似文献

The lossless capture of the entire range of optical densities encountered in a radiograph can require up to 4000 individual shades of gray. Most inexpensive computer displays, and most grayscale image formats contain only 256 gray shades. To use these systems, a look up table must be generated to display the scanned image, which maps the approximately 4000 gray shades in the digitized radiograph to the 256 gray shades on the monitor. However, if this conversion is inappropriately performed, much of the information contained in the original image could be lost. This study was undertaken to develop an histogram equalization algorithm that would automatically convert the 4000 gray shade digitized radiograph into a 256 gray shade image file, without perceptable loss of diagnostic information or image quality. 相似文献
