Background: Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a common disease in sows due to intensification of pig production. Despite direct economic losses, UTI prevalence and respective microbial identification are still poorly studied.
Objective: The aims of this study were to identify the causative agents of UTI in sows through MALDI-TOF MS and to characterize their antimicrobial resistance profiles.
Materials and Methods: Urine samples from 300 sows of three herds from São Paulo State (Brazil) were screened for UTI; suggestive samples were submitted to bacterial isolation. Species identification was performed by MALDI-TOF MS and susceptibility profiles were determined using disc diffusion method.
Results: 128 samples suggestive of UTI were analyzed; 48% of the animals presented UTI caused by a single pathogen, while the remaining 52% presented mixed infection. Escherichia coli stood out with the highest frequency among both single and mixed infections. The Gram-positive were exclusively associated with 27% of single infections. The mixed infections were further classified into 49 profiles. The high frequency of multiresistant profiles stood out for most of the studied isolates.
Conclusions: MALDI-TOF MS enabled the identification of rare pathogens related to UTI which may represent higher risk for porcine health, especially considering high frequency of multiresistant profiles. 相似文献
Previous research on energy requirements of female Saanen goats, using the factorial approach, has not considered the specific requirements for maintenance and growth during the pubertal phase. Thus, the purpose of this study was to estimate energy requirements for maintenance (Trial 1) and growth (Trial 2) of non‐pregnant and non‐lactating female Saanen goats at the pubertal phase from 30 to 45 kg. In Trial 1, the net energy requirements for maintenance (NEm) were estimated using 18 female Saanen goats randomly assigned to three levels of intake: ad libitum, and 70% and 40% of ad libitum intake. These animals were pair‐fed in six slaughter groups, each consisting of one animal for each level of intake. In Trial 2, the net energy requirements for growth (NEg) were estimated using 18 female Saanen goats, which were fed ad libitum and slaughtered at targeted BW of 30, 38 and 45 kg. The NEm was 52 kcal/kg0.75 of BW. The NEg increased from 3.5 to 4.7 Mcal/kg of BW gain as BW increased from 30 to 45 kg. Our results suggest that the guidelines of the major feeding systems for the entire growth phase may not be adequate for females at pubertal phase. 相似文献
1. The synthesis of heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70) mRNA and the expression of Hsp70 in the liver of broiler chickens submitted to acute heat stress (35°C for 5 h) was investigated.
2. Hsp70 expression was detected by SDS‐PAGE and Western blot analysis using a polyclonal antiserum against Hsp70 of Blastocladiella emersonii. The specific signal of Hsp70 mRNA was analysed by Northern blot using as probe a Hsp70 cDNA of B. emersonii.
3. An increase in the amount of Hsp70 was detected from the first up to the fifth hour of acute heat exposure. This increase in the amount of Hsp70 was accompanied by an increase in Hsp70 mRNA which peaked at 3 h.
4. This study shows that the heat induced increase in Hsp70 mRNA and protein in broiler liver, in vivo, are time dependent, similar to that in mammals. 相似文献
This study was performed to evaluate the use of glycerol-preserved equine amniotic membrane as replacement for full-thickness corneal defects in dogs. Eighteen mixed-breed dogs were used. A perilimbal, full-thickness, 5 mm square corneal defect was created surgically, and a donor implant of equine amniotic membrane of the same size and shape sutured in place with 10–0 nylon simple interrupted sutures. Corneal edema was observed near the implant 24 h after surgery, but was absent after 1 week. Granulation tissue and corneal vascularization superficial to the implant were noticed on postoperative day 7, but were absent on day 30. Corneal vascularization persisted until the end of the experiment. There was no fluorescein retention by postoperative day 30. There was slight clearing of the corneal implant by postoperative 30, and slight pigmentation of the donor implant observed at postoperative day 180. An acute inflammatory process as well as fibroblasts were present at early postoperative stages. At postoperative day 60 there was no inflammatory cellular infiltrate, but fibroblasts and fibrosis were present. Corneal architecture was restored at the end of the experiment, with a layering of the epithelium–stroma–debris of amniotic membrane–stroma–endothelium present, and pigmentation and vascularization present in the deep layers of the cornea. Although vascularization indicated some degree of graft rejection, the clinical and histological evidence indicates that the xenologous amniotic membrane can be useful as a tectonic graft in the repair of full-thickness lesions of the cornea of dogs. 相似文献
In order to investigate the occurrence of Hepatozoon infection in Neotropical felids from Brazil, blood from the jugular or cephalic vein was taken from 29 non-domestic felids including ocelot (Leopardus pardalis), little spotted cat (Leopardus tigrinus), margay (Leopardus wiedii), and jaguarondi (Puma yagouaroundi) from the Northeast region of Brazil. Hepatozoon infection was confirmed by light microscopy and molecular techniques. The results showed five naturally infected felids. Partial sequences of the 18S rRNA gene of the Hepatozoon sp. from these felids were further analyzed. Sequences revealed that the isolates found are closely related to Hepatozoon sp. from domestic cats in Spain. Hepatozoon species from Neotropical felids were identified molecularly and characterized for the first time. This is also the first report of Hepatozoon infection in a little spotted cat. 相似文献
Plutella xylostella is the major pest of Brassica and is resistant to more than 95 synthetic insecticides, including deltamethrin, which is frequently used in family farming activities in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil. A possible strategy for overcoming such resistance is the use of botanical insecticides containing essential oils. The aim of the present study was to determine the chemical composition of essential oils from Syzygium aromaticum, Melaleuca alternifolia, Melaleuca leucadendra, Eucalyptus citriodora and Eucalyptus globulus and evaluate the effects of these oils as well as selected constituents (β-pinene, α-terpinene, ρ-cymene, limonene, 1,8-cineole, γ-terpinolene, citronellal, terpinen-4-ol, eugenol, β-caryophyllene and E-nerolidol) on different stages of development of two populations of P. xylostella – one susceptible and one resistant to deltamethrin. Chemical analysis by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry revealed eugenol (S. aromaticum), 1,8-cineole (E. globulus), citronellal (E. citriodora), terpinen-4-ol (M. alternifolia) and E-nerolidol (M. leucadendra) to be the major constituents. Among the oils tested, S. aromaticum was the most promising in the different modes of action and had the same level of toxicity to the two populations of P. xylostella analyzed. Among the constituents, E-nerolidol and terpinen-4-ol exhibited promising larvicidal action, whereas limonene exhibited promising ovicidal and antifeedant action. None of the oils presented severe phytotoxicity to the host plant. All results were compared to those achieved with deltamethrin and azadirachtin, which were used as positive controls. The deltamethrin-resistant population of P. xylostella did not exhibit pre-adaptive resistance to the oil from S. aromaticum or E-nerolidol, terpinen-4-ol and limonene.
The extensive use of chlorotriazines as selectiveherbicides in agriculture and their relatively highpersistence imply that these compounds are now presentin the environment, contaminating surface and groundwater. In European countries, United States andCanada, the drinking water ordinance demands a limitedconcentration of 0.5 μg L-1 for the sum of allpesticides and 0.1 μg L-1 with respect to eachcompound, implying on the necessity of sensitive andselective analytical methods. In the present study wedescribe two methods for the analysis of atrazine,simazine and ametryn residues in surface and groundwater collected from the Espraiado Stream watershed,Ribeirão Preto region, SP, Brazil. The HPLC methodused for sample screening was based on herbicideextraction with dichloromethane:isopropanol (9:1, v/v)followed by reversed-phase chromatography (RP-8) withdetection at 220 nm. The presence of herbicides wasconfirmed by GC-MS after ethyl acetate extraction. Atotal of 250 samples collected at different sites fromOctober 1995 to July 1996 were analyzed. Ametrynresidues were detected in 17 samples but almost alwaysat concentrations below those maximum levels recommended by international agencies of environmental control. 相似文献
