The development of site-specific crop management is constrained by the availability of sensors for monitoring important soil and crop related conditions. A mobile time-domain reflectometry (TDR) unit for geo-referenced soil measurements has been developed and used for detailed mapping of soil water content and electrical conductivity within two research fields. Measurements made during the early or late season, when soil moisture levels are close to field capacity, are related to the amount of plant available water and soil texture. Combined measurements of water content and electrical conductivity are closely related to the clay and silt fractions of a variable field. The application to early season field mapping of water content, electrical conductivity and clay content is presented. The water and clay content maps are to be used for automated delineation of field management units. Based on a spatial analysis of the soil water measurements, recommendations are made with respect to sampling strategies. Depending on the variability of a given area, between 15 and 30 ha can be mapped with respect to soil moisture and electrical conductivity with sufficient detail within 8 h. 相似文献

The early growth of spring barley (Hordeum ulgare L.), Brassica rapa L. ssp. oleifera (DC.) Metzger, Stellaria media (L.) Vill. and Viola arvensis Murray in growth chambers and in shading cages outdoors at different irradiance levels was compared. Leaf area and shoot dry weight were lower outdoors than in growth chambers at similar irradiance and temperature. A simulation model with temperature and irradiance responses derived from growth-chamber experiments was used to test whether outdoor growth could be estimated properly. The correlations of the regressions between simulated and measured values of leaf area index (LAI) and shoot dry weight were high. However, with some exceptions, overestimations occurred, more for shoot dry weight than for LAI, and more for 100% daylight than for lower irradiance. The reasons for this are discussed. 相似文献

- The temperate soft coral Dendronephthya australis has been listed as Endangered in NSW, Australia, owing to its restricted geographic range, rapidly declining populations, and a number of escalating threats. Research to assess practical methods for aquarium cultivation of D. australis for rehabilitation of wild populations is considered a high priority.
- Previous attempts at restoration by transplanting D. australis fragments have had limited success, but identified key challenges, which included achieving attachment to substrates and identifying appropriate foods to maximize survival.
- This study presents the results of experiments promoting the attachment of cuttings (nubbins) removed from donor colonies to moveable substrates (small concrete discs). Using a balanced orthogonal experimental design, three feeding regimes were tested: live artemia, live rotifers and dry powdered zooplankton.
- Donor colony survival and growth were also monitored over a 6 month period in the field.
- An overall nubbin survival rate of 100% was achieved under all three feeding regimes. Attachment rates were similar across feeding treatments, although nubbin behavioural responses (percentage of open polyps before feeding) suggested some preference for live rotifers.
- The cutting removal process had no significant effect on donor colonies in the wild, indicating that this is a sustainable approach for restoration.
- Overall, this study substantially advances the methodology for maintaining an Endangered azooxanthellate soft coral in aquaria and provides valuable input for management programmes aimed at implementing transplantation into the wild to aid species recovery.
